teejay,

Is that a Bill Hicks reference in the wild? Nice.

teejay,

The Kingkiller Chronicle

teejay,

Agreed. And only if the movie or show is not produced by Netflix.

teejay,

… so you tipped $0, right? Don’t leave us hanging!

teejay,

Totally agreed about Disney overstretching stories. But Loki is too interesting of a character, and Tom Hiddleston far too good as Loki, to leave him stuck there. I’m not sure they need an entire new season to free him, though. Maybe a cameo or a post-credit scene somewhere showing him handing off the responsibility and being free to keep being Loki.

teejay,

This is extremely annoying, and it’s been a documented enhancement request from the community for years. What’s even more confusing is that it’s only a problem on Android – it works properly on all desktop environments and iOS. I have no idea why they won’t fix it for Android.

teejay,

Radiolab did a great episode on this very topic.

It gets really interesting when you think about the clash of corporate greed in this area. It’s not hard to imagine car companies selling you a premium option (or worse, subscriptions) where the car will make decisions prioritizing your life and safety over people outside, even if it’s multiple people who would get maimed or killed to keep the driver safe.

teejay,

Sure. Buried in some cryptic legalese in paragraph 3 on page 400 in 1 of 8 different EULAs that the car owner had to accept when first buying the car.

teejay,

You could just, you know, send those creators money directly. Nearly all of them have methods set up for that already, and I’m guessing anyone who doesn’t would set something up in a hurry if you asked to donate to them.

It’s a win / win. You get to sit on your moral high ground, the creators get paid, Google can fuck off.

teejay,

As much as I would love to support all of those creators directly, it’s not a financially viable option for me.

No one’s suggesting you pay more than what you’re paying now. I simply suggested you pay them directly. Take whatever you’re paying per month/year to google directly, then divide that up and contribute directly to the creators of your choosing.

which is more than they’d get from me if I was adblocking their videos

Now you’re moving the goalposts. No one is arguing against the fact that content creators get some amount of money from ads and subscriptions. The argument was that donating to them directly is better / more revenue for the creators, since google doesn’t get a cut. You spend the same amount, the creators get paid more, google gets paid nothing.

It’s bizarre how you are such an apologist for google.

teejay,

At the end of the day, Google’s paying them more for my views than if I were an ad-viewing user. So for ~$20/mo (for family plan), that’s much more financially viable for me than if I were to pay $1/mo to all 100+ creators I watch.

Are you trolling? It feels like you are. At no point in this thread is anyone saying you need to start paying more. If you’re paying $20/mo for premium, and you’re using an arbitrary amount of $1 as the donation minimum per creator, then why not just donate $1 to 20 different creators for each month? Then the next month, donate to the next 20 creators, then the next 20, and so on. Believe it or not, all of those creators still get paid more by your direct donations – even measured over several months – compared to the tiny fraction they’d get from that same money via your premium subscription.

It seems like you’re trying to argue some moral high ground of funding content you enjoy on youtube. That’s fine. But it takes about 10 seconds of critical thinking to find ways to do it where you pay the same, the creators get paid more, and google gets paid nothing.

teejay,

You just accurately (and accidentally?) summarized all religions.

Hundreds storm airport in Russia in antisemitic riot over arrival of plane from Israel (apnews.com)

Hundreds of people stormed into the main airport in Russia’s Dagestan region and onto the landing field Sunday, chanting antisemitic slogans and seeking passengers arriving on a flight from Tel Aviv, Israel, Russian news agencies and social media reported....

teejay, (edited )

my toilets are like 23 years old

You’re more than two decades out of date with design and material improvements. And I’m guessing there are likely issues with things like gaskets and seals that are causing problems. Go pick up some new toilets and hire a plumber to install them, since you may need new valves, flanges, and who knows what else.

teejay,

You bet! While you’re at it, you should seriously consider installing one with a bidet seat. It will, quite literally, change your life. It’s that much better. There are cheap ones available on Amazon that you can install yourself, or you can splurge for a nice toto washlet or similar. Either way, go for it!

teejay,

Preach it brother. When I try to tell people about how amazing they are, I usually get the same reaction of eww gross. So I always respond with: “If you got human poop on your arm, would you just wipe it with dry toilet paper and consider it clean? Or would you wash it?” That usually lands it home.

teejay,

Oddly enough this was the premise for the movie The Dilemma.

teejay,

I didn’t read the books, care to summarize or paste it here?

teejay,

That’s not true. Income is taxed against the individual. Employers are required to withhold income taxes in many cases, but it’s not “a fine charged on the company.” It is a tax on the individual’s income, withheld from the individual.

teejay, (edited )

But the end result is the same. You don’t “make 50k, and lose 15k to taxes”, you just make 35k. That’s is. That’s what you make. If you want more, talk to your employer.

No, that’s exactly what happens. Have you ever filed a tax return? We’re not debating subjective interpretation here. You make a gross income that is then taxed by the government. The income tax that the government takes is taken from your gross income.

Your employer is taxed on your income by “Payroll tax”, which is a tax against the employer and is not income tax:

Payroll taxes include amounts paid by both the employee and the employer to cover any federal taxes due, while income taxes specifically refer to the amount owed by the employee to cover their individual federal income taxes owed.

Source. I’m not trying to be pedantic – in your original post, you said “Income tax is just a fine charged on the company for having employees” which is objectively not true. Income tax != payroll tax.

teejay,

Can we please get bookmarks to remember your most recently used folder? Whenever I want to open a bookmark, I’m forced to start at the root folder and navigate around to find the folder and bookmark I want. If I just used a bookmark from some subfolder of my bookmarks, then I go to open a new one, the bookmark folder should be the last one I used. Instead it always starts at root.

It’s incredibly annoying. All other browsers (including Firefox on iOS) get this right. There have been multiple requests / bugs filed for this for years, but so far nothing.

teejay,

Hang on, Ben Shapiro has a wife?? I have so many questions.

teejay,

From the employee’s perspective, it’s basically an amount of time for you to find a new job while still on the payroll at your current company. There are exceptions, but generally speaking you either won’t survive the PIP, or you will but you’ll be at the top of the list during the next layoffs. And even if you somehow survive all of that, you’re not looking at good raises and career advancement anymore at that company.

So use it as a runway to the next job and move on.

teejay,

Your comment made me laugh out loud. That was well done.
