Oregonians: I'll be out there next week with my wife/kids (7 & 11), staying with her aunt/uncle in Lake Oswego and Neskowin. Our local hosts will take good care of us - planning side trips to Hood, CRG, etc. - but do you recommend any primo family attractions/hikes, eateries, breweries, dispensaries, live music spots, or other happenings? (I'll try to restrain myself from record shopping, and I think we'll just miss Kamasi Washington.) @mrcompletely@caravan@thesizzler@SourceRolls others?
@BEK97@mrcompletely@caravan@SourceRolls In keeping with your classic PDX & environs itinerary I recommend the Japanese Garden and adjacent rose garden (in Washington Park), the Hinterland food cart pod on SE 50th (excellent bites at Burger Stevens and Matt's BBQ Tacos), Little Beast Brewing on SE Division (next door to Lauretta Jean's pie shop, which is also worth a visit), and the Archive Portland dispensary on SE Harold. (You should also visit Crossroads Records - just saying.)
@mrcompletely@SourceRolls@caravan@BEK97 It was formerly owned by the local Episcopal Diocese and was sold to a private owner last year. It's still open to the public, M-F, and still doesn't charge admission.
@mrcompletely The Elk Rock website has a concise history of the property. Apparently the new owners are related to the original owners. (Check the "history" tab)
The other #movie we saw was on streaming last night - finally caught up to AMERICAN FICTION. It's a #film so good, so smart and self aware and engaged with its own meta context that I hesitate to say anything about it at all other than it's well worth your time. And that the acting is uniformly superb.
My taste in movies is mostly pretty cheesy, so for me to really like a Smart Film like this is pretty unusual. Thought it was great.
The son who avoided a TBI this morning has delivered! As promised, Cupcake is on her back in play-off form taking full advantage of the perfect combination of full sun, perfect temperatures, and a cool breeze.
Pinchy is definitely over-performing in her favorite indoor nap spot. She's typically in a tight curl, so the full extension curl with chin perched on paws is a high degree of difficulty and a real stretch for her.
@mrcompletely@tor_haxson The contest's timing is astute. That box had fallen out of favor for many weeks until a sudden change in preference happened a couple of days ago. I think Lily knew she had to be on her A-game in order to compete with Eve, Esther, Jumpy, and Girl Trouble, et al.
@chopaganda@mrcompletely@aburtch@Defiance The Hawkeye miniseries also hewed comparatively close to the source material (Matt Fraction & David Aja's turn with Clint, c. 2010-12), which worked to its benefit
In honor of Steve Albini I will listen to nothing but Steely Dan and the #GratefulDead today. There's nothing more #punk than not giving a fuck about some famous asshole's opinions.
@mrcompletely About halfway through, myself (podcast eps are commute soundtracks) and Jesse couldn't have picked better weather for an ep about a boogie.
Kendrick always had better flow but Drake has producers, pace, and beats to make you run through a brick wall.
Kdot is weirder, which would be a plus in any other genre of music but rap, which I like straight-on, hard, & boom-bap, because I grew up on 90s East Coast rap.
Kendrick is more authentic & angry in these diss tracks. He's vicious, honestly, maybe too much. Drake seems like he's putting on airs (and he is, I mean... DeGrassi).
