My second-favorite Eggleston photo used for an album cover. Underrated Spoon record, I think. Bonus photo for the sentiment on the inner. @vinylrecords

@chopaganda @mrcompletely @aburtch @Defiance The Hawkeye miniseries also hewed comparatively close to the source material (Matt Fraction & David Aja's turn with Clint, c. 2010-12), which worked to its benefit

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @chopaganda @aburtch @Defiance Totally agree about Fraction in general, and his run with Hawkeye is seriously great.

A one-two hit from honky tonk hero Carl Smith. No overlap between these two comps of Carl's early fifties best; one's on Columbia, the other's on Rounder. @vinylrecords

@mrcompletely Today's Deadcast ep. is a great way to start.

@mrcompletely About halfway through, myself (podcast eps are commute soundtracks) and Jesse couldn't have picked better weather for an ep about a boogie.

Old and blazingly white take coming:

Kendrick always had better flow but Drake has producers, pace, and beats to make you run through a brick wall.

Kdot is weirder, which would be a plus in any other genre of music but rap, which I like straight-on, hard, & boom-bap, because I grew up on 90s East Coast rap.

Kendrick is more authentic & angry in these diss tracks. He's vicious, honestly, maybe too much. Drake seems like he's putting on airs (and he is, I mean... DeGrassi).

Kdot is winning.

@mrcompletely @Rosey The Dozens works best in real time, for sure.

Sorry to hear of the passing of iconoclastic [for lack of a better word] indie rock figure Steve Albini. I have friends who recorded and hung out with him and although I disagree with some of his hotter takes, I’m sad for their loss and that of the greater community

@SourceRolls 61 is too young, even for a curmudgeon. Gonna spin Surfer Rosa today and enjoy the mic placements.

@mrcompletely @bourgwick @Corry342 The NRBQ heads I've known tended to be Zappa-philes first and foremost (Matt Groening is a member of this tribe). Some overlap there between the scenes we're discussing, too.

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @bourgwick @Corry342 Doe is a more compelling actor than his Beastie costar. I know the movie, and rocker-type, well. The Q is definitely in that X / Blasters / Lobos family as well.

Best veggie food and Indian food in Portland , Oregon?

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@Stoneycase The best Indian food in the area (IMO) is in the westside suburbs - Beaverton and Hillsboro - where there is a siginificant South Asian population. My favorite is Chennai Masala, in Hillsboro. @mrcompletely is spot-on regarding vegan spots in southeast. They're everywhere, both brick & mortar and carts.

@mrcompletely @caravan @Rosey Had an internship with Elektra Records in the late 90s and witnessed this from Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind) at a smallish venue in PDX called La Luna. He was not happy to play such a space after "opening for the Stones in Seattle". The undersold venue spoke volumes.

two niche editing notes

  • I'm not sure what to call the process of crossfading between a maximally gonzo Spiritualized meltdown and a Natural Information Society track but it's definitely not "beat matching"

  • I've never been more surprised in my audio editing life than when I opened up a waveform from MBV's Loveless and found that the levels are actually quite moderate

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @aubreypiano We're quite fortunate as listeners that Loveless, Isn't Anything, Glider, etc. hit before brickwalling became the industry standard. Not that I think Shields would've countenanced such monstrosities with his work, but still....
