Real talk w/ Billy Strings on Marc Maron's WTF pod. They covered a lot of ground including tearjerkers from Billy's childhood, his musical journey from bluegrass to metal to open improv, why he stopped drinking (was anyone at that RJ Rockers gig?), and the new record "Highway Prayers". He brought his guitar too.

Kurt Vile rocked last night! I realize his voice/demeanor aren't for everyone, but I find him and his music endearing. The Violators were dialed in and the mix sounded great, in a club with harsh acoustics no less. These old ears appreciate a band that can command the room without being excessively loud.

I love having friends with incredibly different music backgrounds and interests.

it adds to the joy of IT when you can both share new things with receptive listeners AND know that you will be introduced to wonderful, new paths to explore in the seemingly endless parade of auditory art

today's example from DJ Junior D (a not on masto encyclopedia of house, electronic, and ambient music) is an interpretation of Eno's Music For Airports by Psychic Temple with Mike Watt

Thinking about bands that could fill the Sphere AND use it to its full potential, and I keep coming back to Tool being #1 on my wishlist.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @caravan @justinbruce @chopaganda @jessay @drewphish they might not fill it (yet) but King Gizz would melt lots of faces if the iron lung video is any indication of their visuals. Better ramp up the rock med operation though.

Give It Time is the love and light, surrender to the flow, uplifting anthem a certain other hamband songwriter I love has been trying to write for 15 years.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@Rosey @mrcompletely @aburtch Great conversation. My own default listening habit is to ignore lyrics - I usually have to make an effort to focus on them. (I realize this is atypical and partly explains my affinity for instrumental music and perhaps even Phish.) While the nonsensical lyrics of classic Phish (no offense to Tom) blend seamlessly with the gestalt of the music in my brain, I find it hard to tune out the forthright lyrics of Trey's new age love & light songs.

We need a word, short phrase, acronym, or perhaps ideally an otherwise semantically null emoji to indicate that you are aware of, and have taken into consideration, the crimes, misdeeds or personal failings of an artist or other creative figure and have decided to continue enjoying or appreciating that person's creative work, perhaps by way of a postmodern view centering artistic meaning in the act of interpretation rather than creation.

I suggest 🤹🏾‍♂️ unless that already means something kinky.

ICYMI Christopher Hazard has been working his magic restoring video for the Phil & Friends 99 Warfield run. So far 4/15 S2 and 4/16 S1 are up on youtube. Def my most-listened-to post-Jerry GD music. I was so excited to get those CD-Rs the next month, never imagined I'd be watching high-quality video on my phone 25 years later.

Hard to wrap my head around Billy not just playing arenas but doing multi-night stands.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@Stoneycase @mrcompletely @chris @chopaganda I also caught those state farm arena shows - had a good experience overall but the bounce back from my seats N2 was annoying. I assume they block off upper deck in most/all big arenas. Midsize venues seem limited in many markets, especially indoors during the winter. Not sure why they wouldn't play outdoors in the warmer months though.

When was the last time none of these players advanced past the first round? No, I'm not gonna bother to look it up

  • LeBron James
  • Steph Curry
  • Kevin Durant

That's very much on the table this season. In fact it'd be a pretty nice prop bet if that's your kind of kink.

@mrcompletely must have been early in LeBron's first Cavs run? I'd be surprised if they go 0/3 but it does seem about time for changing of the guard.

Modern R&B is my biggest blind spot as a music listener. It just all seems kind of boring to me. I fully recognize I am not the target audience for this stuff though.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@mielcarz @mrcompletely in that same orbit, D'Angelo is an outlier r&b star whose mainstream/sex appeal is surpassed by his musicality. Voodoo is one of the greatest records of any genre, and Black Messiah was worth the wait, if you're not familiar with them.

I created a "Kind of Silent" playlist to feed my obsession w/ In A Silent Way. Selections echo the vibe of the OG (nothing matches exactly): ethereal, proto-ambient, hypnotic, unhurried, spacious, serene, blissful, genre fluid. For patient listening, focused work, or insomnia. Ill Considered & special guests incl. Theon Cross - Precipice (Live)

I was just wondering when Ill Considered might have new music out and here it is, ahead of a single coming out tomorrow. Since their most recent album was their finest yet (in fact it keeps moving up and is entering rare air in my personal hierarchy, I think it is a masterpiece) I'm quite excited for anything new from them.

As usual for them, this is improvised.

@exchgr @mrcompletely in my early days of mastodon your UK jazz links sent me down a deep rabbit hole (groundhog burrow?) that I'm still clawing through.

I was wondering if Yussef Kamaal would put out a new record given the success of Black Focus. Wasn't aware of their personal differences.

History of the Vol. 1 Bear's Choice (Warner, 1973, 2023 reissue). Live at the Fillmore East, Feb 13-14 1971, recorded and produced by Owsley Stanley, curated in honor of Pigpen, who is featured heavily, not only on electric side B, but solo acoustic guitar opener of Katie Mae, followed by Jerry/Bobby acoustic tunes, most notably Black Peter. Bear really captured the intimacy of the room. @vinylrecords

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@vinylrecords BTW, while it looks cool, I don't recommend the orange marble (Bear Tracks) pressing - my first copy was dimpled and noisy - apparently a common occurrence - but Warner did replace it with a better-sounding copy.

The Deadcast episode about this record is excellent as always: https://www.dead.net/deadcast/bears-choice-50 s/o @bourgwick

@mrcompletely @harveyroad 💯 The leagues have evolved in opposite directions, starting with the one-and-done talent drain and culminating in the space and pace and freedom of modern NBA vs. the slow grind and domineering coaching of NCAA. Now the only college games I watch are UNC-Duke, which have lost luster, and the tourney, which is still exciting (gambling helps).

My dad still prefers college and complains about traveling every time we watch an NBA game together.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @harveyroad that's true though NCAA refs are worse than NBA (my dad gives them an earful too, so much that I sometimes stick up for them). But I'll accept a degree of human error over the awful game-stopping reviews, especially in the final minutes of tournament/playoff games.

DAVID AXELROD
Seriously Deep
1975 U.S. pressing

Another artist I’ve only just begun to explore.

A friend of mine gifted me two AXELROD albums (this, and Heavy Axe), which is beyond generous because they’re both very pricey: each over $100 CAD.

I’m definitely feeling it. A bit of a vibe goin on this one.
When he gave them to me, he told me “he’s not for everyone” and also that A Tribe Called Quest (who I’m a big fan of) were among many who’ve sampled him.

BEK97,
@BEK97@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @TheVinylApe I feel similarly about Axelrod, who I discovered going backwards from hip hop. He definitely has some bangers but I've never fully connected with his records, which can come off as formulaic or library-esque at times (maybe that's on me).

I could say the same thing about Bob James, another sample-generating 👑 whose work as a producer, arranger, and sideman eclipses his solo records IMO.

I moved my turntable from my digital AV receiver to a 70s Pioneer amp that was collecting dust in my wife's grandma's closet, connected to a pair of 80s JBL cabinet speakers from my dad (woofers refoamed 20 years ago). The amp is powerful and sounds great, except the right speaker channel is gritty (bad capacitor?), so until I get it serviced, I guess I'll be listening to records. @vinylrecords
