An earlier discussion of 84 - 85 era dead made me relisten to part of 7/02/85

I guess there are Lost Sailor haters out there, but this one was memorable to me then, and it still seems great now.

Maybe the Crazy Fingers before helped set the mood.

@mrcompletely @dave_heumann @tor_haxson I concur with everyone here. Thoughts on Lazy Lightning?

@mrcompletely @dave_heumann @tor_haxson I've always admired Bobby's acumen for remembering the lyrics to this and Desolation Row while shitting the bed with so many other songs.

@mrcompletely @arghdos Why do cover bands have such lazy names? Almost Creed. The Australian Pink Floyd. Dead & Company. Sheesh.

No one will top the preeminent Britpop cover band of 1996: No Way Sis.

We need a word, short phrase, acronym, or perhaps ideally an otherwise semantically null emoji to indicate that you are aware of, and have taken into consideration, the crimes, misdeeds or personal failings of an artist or other creative figure and have decided to continue enjoying or appreciating that person's creative work, perhaps by way of a postmodern view centering artistic meaning in the act of interpretation rather than creation.

I suggest 🤹🏾‍♂️ unless that already means something kinky.

Happy to everyone else who has also read Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, and half of Ulysses

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @drummmerandy Exactly. There were passages in Ulysses that I had to let wash over me, not unlike certain moments in my free jazz or musique concrète listening. Safer waters would always follow.

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @drummmerandy Got this from a Publisher's Weekly article 11 years ago (1/2):

Finnegans Wake is long, dense, and linguistically knotty, yet hugely rewarding, if you’re willing to learn how to read it. By this, I don’t mean wallowing in the froth of scholarly exegesis the Wake churned up in its wake. Not the first time out, at least. (I take Joyce’s talk about setting traps for his readers as an expression of hostility born out of years of frustration.)

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @drummmerandy (2/2): Rather, I mean surrendering to Joyce’s music. Meaning here is more a question of effect than of decoding; in this way, this Difficult Book is paradigmatic of great literature more generally. Try reading 25 pages a day, out loud, in your best bad Irish accent. (Seriously - some of what seems like idiolectic obscurity is just a question of how you pronounce your vowels.) You’ll be maddened, you’ll be moved, and you’ll be done in about four weeks.

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @wobs @drummmerandy Totally the way I read Pynchon. Plus the chapter-by-chapter wiki for referential assistance. (That's how I discovered my now-favorite joke in Inherent Vice.)

@mrcompletely @wobs @drummmerandy If we're making recommendations of similar wonderful-challenging books, I shout from the raftertops... Life: A User's Manual by Georges Perec. The 2009 Godine edition is the definitive English language translation.

Late-Period Art Pepper Box Sets

It is fitting that Art Pepper’s late and most productive period enjoyed this degree of documentation. Marginalized during the majority of his haphazard career, Pepper rose above the resistance to be recognized as a true original.

mrcompletely, to random
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

Since lyrics are all terrible anyway I think a couple bands should pivot to songs that are just about the act of jamming in exactly the same unironic way that post Zeppelin 70s rock bands had songs about rocking. What have they got to lose?

  • For Those About To Jam
  • I Wanna Jam All Night (etc)
  • We Will Jam You (OK that needs work)

If someone doesn't do it earnestly, Tapers Choice will do it as a joke and the opportunity is lost

You know the wooks and spunions would eat it up

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

@mrcompletely Masterpiece, which is a word I don't use lightly. Transmuting John's sheets of sound to the harp with the tanpoura and Haden's bass providing a mossy drone-foundation...perfect for a morning in the PNW.

While this band is extremely solid, I had no idea that market demand for Khruangbin was high enough to warrant a Mr. Pibb Khruangbin. https://youtu.be/RBKle48-eAE?si=oS7Lrlbdgll_uQZJ

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@wobs @mrcompletely @theheatwarps Very much top tier don't-pay-it-no-mind background music with every song (and album) rife with same-ness. "Mood music" for the 2020s, minus all of the elements that made Esquivel's music compelling. Audio kitsch pretending to be something more interesting than it is. Plus, wigs.

I'm coordinating a private event in this June and am trying to book a food truck that does good burgers and has an actual mobile truck / vehicle from which said burgers and etc. are served. Any and all tips are appreciated. (1/2)
