a lazy Saturday morning listen to Bobby Charles’ self titled country funk style album from 1972 (2014 LITA reissue). With musical support from members of The Band, a chilled out soulful song based record. Kind of a playful humour going on too, which I enjoy.

@arts @drummmerandy @vinylrecords great record! At some point I need to do a deeper dive to chart Bobby’s path from swamp pop to this sound

@mrcompletely @bourgwick @bookstodon seconded, it’s good, but not to the level folks get excited about (especially never got the hype for the sequels)

I think the root is my problem is I'm generating floats from n-m. I needs it to be blazing fast and it can't use any libs because I need 100% consistency across platforms.

arghdos,
@arghdos@heads.social avatar

@grumpygamer @TomF division by a compile-time constant is usually just shifts, no?

arghdos,
@arghdos@heads.social avatar

@grumpygamer @TomF possibly a dumb idea, as I don’t know the cost, but one trick I’ve used in the past is to use a sobol generator to generate 32 random bits, then bitcast that to a float. Very useful to sample random bit-patterns for math libraries: https://people.sc.fsu.edu/~jburkardt/cpp_src/sobol/sobol.html

Good news for fans, Scavengers' Reign is moving to Netflix. Why is this good news?

  1. it's the best science fiction show around despite the cheesy name
  2. not enough people saw it on Max
  3. so it got canceled (this news was out before the linked article)
  4. more people can see it on Netflix
  5. now maybe season 2 will happen?

I'm ok with it if one is all we get. It's that perfect and ends well. But if the same people do it I'd be glad for a second.

@mrcompletely I still think that a Planet Earth style “documentary” of the ecosystems we see in the show would be absolutely peak.

@mrcompletely we also got two, maybe three, episodes I can think of that we’re kinda this already (lifecycle of an organism) in S1, and both were utterly terrifying and brilliant. Gimme the mid-2000s between seasons webshorts baby

It’s wild how having Toussaint do a horn track can just drop a healthy dose of Nola #funk on almost anyone:

Okay a lot of us have had various "okay, the Fediverse has arrived" moments, and while I never thought it hadn't arrived (I like it here), asking for an upgrade to the song Set Your Chickens Free late on a Sunday and having it in a reply when I wake up Monday is absolutely 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Gilbert Shelton/Hub City Movers "Set Your Chickens Free"

long shot - anyone have a better recording/transfer of THIS version (the original) of this song - not any of the other fine versions out there, lovely as they are. If so, please share in whatever format you can, thx

(lyricist Gilbert Shelton is the creator/artist of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, but they have nothing to do with this song really)

Pitch for a mix I don’t have time to make: the opening beats for every Beat it on Down the Line played back to back. Never play the song.

Bonus points if you count how many beats it is and create some convincing banter a la “Bob voice: 45,373? Jerry: yeah man, outta sight”

arghdos,
@arghdos@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @mrcompletely bonus cut: play all the tracks at once. See how consistent the tempo was over the decades.

This track is bending my brain a bit this morning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUVcZnN86fc

You have the classic start of late RnB / early Funk: "Have you ever heard of: <X>, fake audience: yeaaaaaaah"

Then it drops into sorta a standard afro- for awhile (till ~2min), after which they just abandon the song structure entirely in favor of an extended psych meltdown (complete with dubious mixing!)

It's... kinda great? And kinda jank?

Sorta like someone smashed three different songs together

We've been noticing an issue related to Mastodon and our website. I hope the might be able to help.

About 75% or more of the times I post a URL link to CoffeeGeek from our website - especially a brand new link (like a new article), our website's database connection breaks... for a few minutes. The site is inaccessible. Then it sorts itself out, and is back online. Only happens with Masto-posted links.

Anyone have a clue what's causing this?

Nina Simone - Love Me Or Leave Me (live on the Ed Sullivan Show, 1960)

Last music post for the afternoon due to internet outage. Did you know Nina was a genius on piano? I used to post this on the birdsite once a year, so if you followed me there you probably do know it, but if not, check this shit out! The switch from the swinging jazz feel of the song into the Bach style classical instrumental break is amazing & the move back is even better👑
