a local building society got bought out by Virgin Money, which is great because I've had £180 stuck in a savings account with them for the last 25 years that I haven't been able to retrieve due to the branches having zero records of accounts that old (they deprecated the account type in the early 2000s). tried appointments on several occasions and got nowhere. now Virgin audited all their old accounts, sent me a letter, I called up, and 5 mins later it's being transferred to my account. finally.
The reactions to the HP ink DRM reminded me that people have very short memories.
It's great to see people pissed off about it and taking HP to task (the resistor bypass trick is pretty funny) but please keep in mind that this is an industry-wide behaviour problem that has been going on for at least 25 years, with horrendous environmental impact.
I'm not saying you shouldn't be pissed off. On the contrary: be more pissed off. Extend your ire to every printer manufacturer.
@gsuberland a practice that keeps me sticking to decades old colour laser printers (had my CL2600n from 2006 until a cpuple of years ago when the feeding belt broke and no spares could be found - and now a M451dn). 3rd party toner is not a problem, printing is pennies on the page and the printer is dirt-cheap second-hand :)
@dansup You're talking about a company headed by a person from the same mold as Musk. There are absolutely no surprises there - neither of them want the fediverse to exist, as the fediverse does not gain them any money, surveillance or power.
