What I've learned from watching repeated, widespread public support for u.s. military aggression across the decades is this:

Most americans are happy to support terrorism if it's not their families who are being burned and bombed to death.

And that's a reeeeeeeal sobering and sad realization.

Transition is not only a process of becoming one's true self.

It's also a process of deprogramming oneself from decades of cis culture's brainwashing around sex and gender.

Remember: It's not your fault that you were brainwashed but what they taught you is still bullshit.

It's OK to reject that mess and start over. You deserve that opportunity.

I heard a gust of wind pass my window and rattle the temperature sensor outside. I looked out the window to discover the setting sun is somewhat obscured by what looks like a cloudy haze in the distance.

I felt excited, thinking, "A storm is coming, yay!"

Then I checked the weather and they mentioned that it is wildfire smoke from Canada.

Now I'm depressed. 😞

I finally went to bed around 3am. I just woke up.

I can't remember the last time I read an opinion piece by Jonathan Chait. He revealed himself to be an anti-trans bigot a number of years ago, and I dismissed him as the kind of asshole I shouldn't trouble myself with.

Today, I read a piece by him that @SallyStrange linked to (via archive) and I have to say...

His piece reeks of the kind of politics and attitudes that I tend to associate with a cis/white/male person who feels quite comfortable in their privileges.

There's a certain kind of person who has an assortment of good intentions, doesn't want to back too much violence and oppression in the world because that would make them feel bad about themselves, but also doesn't want to make themselves feel uncomfortable or inconvenienced by progressive social change.

And so, they do just enough to not feel shitty about themselves.

And they don't bother doing much more.

That's the kind of person I see falling under the label "liberal."

And they suck ass.

But also, liberals tend to be conformists who worry about appearing respectable and good to Jane and John Q. Mainstream.

They don't want the neighbors to talk and they don't want to see people frowning at them during the PTA meeting.

Those would be bad things. They want to seem level, logical, and good in polite society.

So, they instinctively head for a mushy centrist version of progressive/left politics and action. Just far enough left of center to not look like an asshole to other Democrats (Think of the political neighbors!) but those of on the left recognize them as the assholes they are.

And those on the left are the "unwashed trash" that liberals feel compelled to distance themselves from and say, "See, we're still good. We aren't like THEM."

But the thing about those of us on the left is this:

We recognize that liberals largely don't have a problem punching down and stepping on others to maintain their comfort but they just don't want to punch or step with as much force as a conservative and their fascist pals.

And that's OK, liberals. I see you. I understand.

To me, you aren't full-on assholes like conservatives and their fascist pals.

You're asshole-lite.

You're a somewhat less odious version of asshole.

And you still suck.

You've made this clear with your support of genocide lately and your unquestioning support of a president who is fine with genocide but is starting to worry that maybe, just maybe, it's burying his chances at reelection.

You refreshed my memory as to why I don't like liberals very much.

And you reminded me of why I usually see you as just another version of conservative.

Having said all that I did in this thread, I will also say this about the left:

I saw the racism, sexism, and transphobia that riddled the left during the Bernie Sanders campaign years. I saw the same bigotries pop up among those further left, who saw Bernie as too centrist for their tastes.

It's not like the left doesn't have a massive problem with bigotry and I've seen you all try to justify your prejudice by bending leftist political theory to justify your ill sentiments. (IdPol, anyone?)

So, the left has its own asshole factor and I've seen a few too many of you make excuses for that and try to bury it.

So really, there are a variety of species of asshole who exist from liberal to left.

I tend to prefer leftist politics but I've been around long enough that I know the left has an asshole problem, too. It's a different asshole problem form liberals but it has its intersections, too.

There's plenty of suck to go around it seems.

And this isn't a new problem with the left.

If you know the history of leftist activism from the previous century, a significant subset of the women's movement consisted of people who were so alienated by the misogyny of the 1960s left, that they broke off to form their own movement to push hard against society's sexism.

The left has always had its bigoted assholes, too.

Jack Dorsey left Bluesky because they want some way of moderating awful posts and he is opposed to that. He thought Twitter banning Trump was a terrible idea.

He said he has always liked how Musk uses Twitter and seems to agree with the general direction Musk has taken Twitter in.

He wants to monetize social media with Bitcoin transactions.

Jack Dorsey is a libertarian, nazi piece of garbage who doesn't care if he burns the planet up with Bitcoin profiteering.

I have to give Bluesky credit: they managed to alienate Dorsey so badly that he deleted his account and left to find another social media platform that he might exploit for nazi discourse and bitcoin profit.

Nostr is his next target, btw. This appears to be the next social media platform he will play with.

Apparently people are portraying campus protests as entwined with "Antifa radicals" who are the recipients of secret funding by shadowy outside influences.

One of the funders they point to is George Soros, a rich Jewish man who antisemitic conspiracy theorists believe funds most everything the right wing hates.

The person who boosted this is the administrator of an instance devoted to Jewish Fedi-users, btw, and the magazine that is referenced is a right wing Jewish magazine.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the widespread accusation that if you oppose country A's genocide against people B, you are really using this as cover for wanting a genocide against anyone who has some ethnic or religious background in common with the majority demographic of country A.

This sounds a lot like George W. Bush's "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists!" 9-11 bullshit thinking, repurposed for 2024.

FYI, denoting the word "Christian" as a default label for a good person, even if it's meant as a complement to a non-christian, essentially reproduces cultural assumptions of christian supremacy.

So saying a christian is behaving like an atheist when they turn away from others in need and saying an atheist is behaving like a christian when they help others in need is not great.

Would you say this about a person who is Muslim or Jewish? They'd be annoyed for very good reasons.

Don't do this.
