Kinda weird to be on both sides of the barricades.

I encounter people who think that using AI trained on art of others is unacceptable in absolutely ANY way, including experimentation, brainstorming and innocent fun.

And DeviantArt is full of people who think that generating one-prompt images in ridiculous numbers and then selling them online is totally fine.

Both examples are extreme, I'm not fond of these for sure.

#AIart is like stock image gallery with weird randomizer. You can do #art with that, but you are constrained by assets available to you. Speaking of "assets", when you make a game using stuff from asset store, be it art, music or code, you are a #gamedev, but not necessarily an #artist (specifically visual artist), #musician or #programmer.

@unidentified_mustelid I'm pretty sure the slot machine aspect of generative AI is a large part of the appeal for many users, and also maybe why there's so much money trying to inject it everywhere there might be more addicts

Sooooo, if is running and is like taking a bus, then learning various techniques like inpainting and making a controlled effort using it is like learning to drive a bus or something?

@unidentified_mustelid Wouldn’t it be closer to riding the bus?

You need to know the connections, stops, and transfers, but you don’t need to know how to operate the bus?

A gift for a friend. A kinda muscular futuristic version of her character.

I often have an impostor syndrome.
Many people launch locally, invent intricate pipelines, use complex tooling and even train models.

And I just use an online tool where all I do is provide positive and negative prompt, guidance scale, resolution, choose a model from a limited list (usually 3, maybe 5, models I always choose from), and hit the button a limited number of times per day for free.

Maybe I'm overthinking. I still get results that leave people fascinated.

thudfactor,

@unidentified_mustelid I do that thing you said (local, pipelines, etc) because I am more interested in the process than the outcome. I mean, the outcome is great -- but it's the process that's the fun part for me.

@thudfactor I also like to tinker with stuff. I see playing around with prompts as a form of tinkering. Just... not ready to make a deeper dive because I already have too much to tinker with 😅
