Pro tip: the opposite condition to (foo < bar) is not (bar > foo).

But it's surprisingly easy to stare at it for five minutes and not see the mistake!

@thomasfuchs Aye, for anything more complicated than an acute accent on a vowel (Ctrl+Alt) I just copy some foreign text into a scratchpad and compose my text with bits clipped from that, like it's a ransom note.

Puzzle mashup ideas I've never quite figured out the rules for:

Minesweeper vs Conway's Life. You're trying to figure out where all the mines are, but they periodically move, under Life rules. So some of your previous deductions give you new information, but not all, and you have to keep ahead of it. But how does the game decide when a Life turn happens?

Or how about a puzzle in which you push digits around until you get them all different in each row, column etc: 'Sudokoban'. Hmmmm.

uriy,
@uriy@hachyderm.io avatar

@simontatham Would the Conway rules be followed strictly, allowing mines to be generated in 'revealed' spaces (my guess: yes); and after a Conway generation round, would clues in revealed space be updated (my hope: yes)?

uriy,
@uriy@hachyderm.io avatar

@simontatham updating already visited areas would be a welcome mercy. Perhaps I have a cruel streak, but I think the delayed punishment of wrong flagging would be hilarious, especially if accompanied by a mocking animation.

This thread just made me fire up Minesweeper for the first time in 1000 years, and it's all daisies in a meadow now. Startling.

@simontatham Luckily before I could suggest 'geese' as the organisms (the most hostile creatures I could think of) it dawned on me that 'geese' and 'hard to detect' don't sit that well together in a sentence :D

@whitequark Hard to decide how much of a flex this is. Reading him leaves me with me the impression of someone who's rather tight-wound, with a hairtrigger blockfinger.

    @lcamtuf Wouldn't it be better to simply untilt the Earth? We could get Iron Manchild to do it. Sure, it would put a few noses out of joint over at Stonehenge, but no longer having long winter nights: worth it.

    My wife may be getting contacts and ditching her glasses now that her vision has finally gone from something not bad like 20/50 to a bit worse than that. Get this: She had to take a class on how to use them.

    Maybe this is common practice, I have no idea. All I know is, I first got contacts at age 13, and nobody taught me anything about what to expect or how to take care of things. I did SO many things wrong early on, it's amazing I can still see.

    Overall, I'm really glad she's taking the class. She just texted me saying "OMG this is so hard," referring to her first attempts at putting contact lenses on her eyeballs.

    Garbage

    You have extremely limited telekinesis; say, you can exert .01N (roughly one gramme weight) of force in a chosen direction at a distance of up to 2m.

    1. is there anything useful (for good or evil) you could do with that?

    2. other terrible superpowers?

    Weird question but is there anyone in England (not the rest of the UK) who follows me and who would admit to reading Techrights at any point recently? If so please let me know, and if not don't go and read Techrights it's awful

    No bookmark but my history shows 2 visits in forever. One was in Oct '21, an irc related story judging from the URL, the other 17 Jan this year and (stillfrom the URL) it appears to concern you (my URL-based guess: it contains a bad-faith reading of something that might have been said flippantly).

    I live in a country, ostensibly run by adults, where a major political party can't decide whether it's Mickey Mouse or Barbie that poses the greater threat.

    @mattblaze Here in the UK the same cast of people are terrified of small boats. I reckon that with an original print of Tugboat Mickey I could secure the surrender of both the UK and USA by teatime (EST).
