danielhz,

@jens2go @Nature @dyanilewis It is deplorable how something so valuable is not properly protected.

Do you know that GitHub does not support IPv6 yet? I noticed this when trying to clone a repository from an IPv6 only server. This is another reason open-source projects should start moving away from GitHub and not requiring us to depend on a single vendor.

Do you know that there is a market for IPv4 addresses where prices are increasing? We really don't need a market for a scarce resource when we can use an alternative abundant resource like IPv6 addresses. Some big companies have bought large amounts of IPv4 addresses (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv4_address_exhaustion#Markets_in_IP_addresses). I don't think this market will benefit people, special in regions where the resource gets more scarce.

danielhz,

Watching the drama unfold regarding Threads' promise/threat to federate with mastodon and all I can think is, why are we trying so hard to smoosh everyone back into the same place again? Communities don't work like that. Smooshing everyone together causes all the problems that plague internet communities. It's good to have separate places for separate communities. Stop trying to cram everyone together! IT NEVER WORKS.

danielhz,

@fraying @evan @wolf480pl @Gargron Groups are something I would really like to have. I would like to share pictures of birds with the bird lovers' group, and share pictures of spiders with the spider lovers' group. When living in Denmark, people used Facebook groups a lot, for sport clubs and for the neighborhood. I would have been happy if I could have accessed those groups from my own ActivityPub instance.

danielhz,

@evan @fraying @wolf480pl @Gargron @groups Thanks for the news Evan, I imagine that private and fine-grained groups can be a complicated beast if I can share a post with two groups.

Last week's comic on Kissinger

danielhz,

@jensorensen Kissinger has participated in the killing of Chileans at least since 1070, in Chile and abroad. The day after Kissinger's death, the Chilean ambassador to the United States, Juan Gabriel Valdes, wrote: "A man whose historical brilliance never managed to hide his deep moral misery has died." Democratic people should condemn him for his support of the creation of dictatorships and a policy of assassinations that killed around 60 thousand people in South America.

Beavers Are Ecosystem Engineers, But Hungry Wolves Limit How Far They Influence

https://botany.fyi/eU5rlm?b1

The study found that wolves are more likely to predate the beavers that travel further away from the water on the longer feeding trails. Because of this, the wolves are directly affecting the forest structure by limiting how far the beavers travel away from the water to fell trees and forage.

danielhz,

@botanyone quite interesting.

I took this photo of king penguins in Porvenir, Tierra del Fuego, Chile, my beautiful country. The King Penguins of Tierra del Fuego are the only colony that inhabits South America. In 2010, this charismatic seabird arrived in Tierra del Fuego to feed, breed and live. The reproductive cycle of the king penguin is the longest of the 18 penguin species, lasting between 14 and 15 months from courtship to the end of breeding, they do not build nests and lay only one egg that the father or mother incubates between their feet. If successful, they lay two eggs in a period of three years. At around five years of age, the species reaches sexual maturity.

danielhz,

@Alanwolf @Konenpanien Of course, all of them have one! They are waiting for their partners who are looking for food.

Whenever I'm asked on a form for my race/ ethnicity and "Asian" is one category, that's sort of a middle-finger to more than half the people in existence, as you're lumping us into a single group and care not about any differentiations between us beyond that we're of the generally brown masses over there.

danielhz,

@00Aaron I was trying to remember where I was asked for my ethnicity, but I don't remember. I think it was in a conference that wanted to measure the diversity to improve it. However, the categories were so weird, since they are based on the United States categorization where the term Hispanic or Latino is used for people coming from a very diverse region, South America. It is really weird that the notions of race and ethnicity still have legal impact in the United States.

danielhz,

@dworkin Ha-Joon Chang has a section on this topic in his Book "23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism." The thing 14 has good arguments to show that US managers are over-priced. I recommend it.

danielhz,

@aral A friend told me that all the people she knows are killed, displaced, injured, or starving, including her family. She is constantly receiving news about friends that have been killed. Her family has no way where to go. Yesterday, Netanyahu said that "it is time for war," so I see no way this genocide will end soon. So, I have no hope words for my friend.

danielhz,

@aral It should not be easy to stay in Israel now. Not only for Palestinians who work there, but also for Israelis that disapprove of the genocide. Have you read about forced disappearing or detention these days? I haven't read, but I can imagine this can happen because it usually happens under authoritarian governments.

danielhz,

@ia42 @timnitGebru I think this question is not fair since I have read @timnitGebru denouncing other genocides as well.

danielhz,

@ia42 @timnitGebru I don't find Yousef a trustable person. I agree that Hamas has committed crimes over Palestinian and Israeli people, but this does not give the Israeli government permission to perform actions over the Palestinian population that fall into several of the definitions of genocide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide_definitions). There are 2 million people suffering from it. @ia42, do you think Palestinians want this "help" from Israel to get rid of Hamas, as Yousef proposes?

danielhz,

@ia42 This discussion started because you negated the genocide against the Palestinian with a very unfair question to Timnit Gebru. Now, your argument is that if a genocide is a medium for saving abducted people, then it is not a genocide. You are relativizing what a genocide is, and your question is also trying to relativize it. The answer to your question is that a genocide is not an option, even when you find no way to achieve your goal.

In case it helps some folks empathise:

Over 7,000 Matthew Perries have been killed in Gaza this month, including over 3,000 baby Matthew Perries.

danielhz,

@aral A question is how many people will be killed before governments and people supporting this genocide reconsider their support. How many killed Palestinians are enough for them?

danielhz,

@aral Today the number of killed people in Gaza is over 10 thousands. For some people, it is still not enough.

I am proud of the Chilean government's condemnation of Israel's attacks on the Palestinian population and recalling of the ambassador. Gabriel Boric said, "As President, I do not hesitate for a second to condemn in the strongest and most categorical manner the Hamas terrorist attacks (...) but we do not accept being made to choose between one side or the other, we choose humanity."

When I'm feeling particularly "in the flow' I like to waste hours trying to catch swallows in flight. Some of these are babies - they don't fly at quite the warp speed of the adults. These birds were also following a vaguely predictable path and in bright light which makes tracking them slightly easier. For the first time in my life I feel that spending more time playing video games as a kid would have given me some useful skills.

A juvenile welcome swallow flying over water. it appears to be looking at the camera
A adult welcome swallow, wings spread, banking over some reed heads
A young welcome swallow banking over water.

danielhz,

@tessa_murray The tails for the last two do not look as scissors as the first one. I have never noticed these difference between them. Can they change the tail position in this way, or are they of different types?

Israel is clear about its intentions in Gaza – world leaders cannot plead ignorance of what is coming

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/24/israel-gaza-world-leaders-un-genocide-palestinians

danielhz,

@Nigel_Purchase Several human rights organizations (as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International) are reporting war crimes against civilians in Gaza. However, this is omitted in the recent joint declaration of the leaders of US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, and Italy, which recognizes a right of self-defense for Israel without stating limitations. It seems that such intentions are somehow accepted. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/10/22/joint-statement-on-israel-2/
