A few days ago @ward tooted about how it's somehow "AI art", but if it's human-made, inexplicably it's just "content":
https://easymode.im/notes/9s9fhdg8jh3gi3h7

His toot has been living rent-free in my head ever since.

I had ranted a few times before how "content" is a corporate-y way to devalue art. How "user-generated content" is a term designed to make it easier to deny the significance (not just monetary) of the amazing stuff people create online.

Contrasting this with "AI art" is jarring, and spot-on. 👀

@rysiek @ward To add upon everything you've already said, it also baffles me when someone describes their own work as "content". It always reminds me of this programming concept: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covariance_and_contravariance_(computer_science)>. It only makes sense to call it a generic name like "content" when we're a platform with various types of it (think: Youtube). Reviews, guides, you name it. But when we're the ones creating it, surely we know what it is! Is it a review? Good, we're a reviewer then, not a "content creator"!

Are Presidents Above the Law? By @rbreich

This week, Trump's team will argue before the Supreme Court that he is above the law.

It's a BS claim and he knows it, but until SCOTUS rules, the federal criminal conspiracy case against is on hold.

He's trying to run out the clock so he can't be convicted before the election.

@stux USA is truly a backwards place. In my country even a felon can vote, but a felon wouldn't be able to become a president. In USA it seems to be the other way around: after a felony they take your voting rights right away, but apparently it's not an issue when being a candidate.

Saving my changes in . Saw this "commit changes" button and read it as "commit crimes".
Too much Fedi jokes, I guess :blobcatpusheen:

@madargon "Commit crimes" happen when someone uses "Update" as their commit message.

According to you, which is the most prominent opensource project and why?

vifon,
@vifon@mstdn.social avatar

@nixCraft Not nearly as industry-changing as the others mentioned but it always astonishes me to think about the journey GNU Emacs had. It got created in a world with an entirely different hardware and software landscape, with entirely different UI conventions (or rather lack of them), and it still thrives nearly four decades later after continuously adapting to all these changing conditions. I like to say that every obscure Emacs feature tells a story, a story of some ancient use-case.

@nixCraft Why is this echo from the example needed? Wouldn't it be more kosher to close the stdin or redirect /dev/null to it? Is there some special significance to sending the letter "Q"?

It's time to address the elephant in the room, or actually Threads

As many of you may know Threads went live in Europe and with that they started testing federation with the Fediverse

At this point there is a choice to make

  1. Block Threads on instance level, that will take away the choice for each person

  2. Do not block and let people block if they want to(1 search and 2 clicks)

After much consideration and talks I think we need to go with option 2 and let people decide for themselves

@stux Damn, literally 2h after I migrated to your server for this specific reason.

Well, I guess I'm going to trust your research whether the account-level domain blocks are robust enough. Thanks for being transparent.
