⚠️ PSA for US peeps: please don’t forget, new COVID boosters are available now and recommended for everyone.

Schedule an appointment right now to be better protected.

@thomasfuchs we really need to name these booster rounds. Bivalent was a good way to disambiguate the last one, but what do we call this one? Bivalent 2: Electric Boogaloo?

Time for more cephalopods! This time around, we have Wunderpus photogenicus (yes, this is really the scientific name). The first one we saw was in maybe 15 feet of water and our guide found it before we had all even descended. It didn't seem too bothered as photographers gathered around and snapped away. Philippines diving is epic!

Even bigger project! I spent over 31h imaging this two-panel mosaic of the Elephant Trunk nebula. This area is jam-packed with colorful emissions and strange dusty structures. Which do you like better? Foraxx + boost (first) or HOO (second)

Just made another sale! This customer was looking for some specific critters and I was able dig them out of my extensive photo archives 😃. If you're looking for a specific creature you don't see on the site or want a different image of a published creature, feel free to shoot me a message and I'll see what I can find.

Big project alert! This image is an area in Cygnus containing both the North America nebula (big blue area) and the Pelican nebula (bump in the top middle). This area is rich in OIII, which gives it a nice blue color with certain processing. This is over 25h of total exposure time across the two panels of the mosaic.

Clear skies are too precious to waste, even if it's the full/super/blue/whatever moon.

Luckily, narrow band filters help making the data collected under moon glow usable.

I can see details of the Bubble Nebula in the individual sub exposures so hopefully I'll be able to process this into an acceptable image.

Image of an astrophotography rig on the side of a small road in between fields. The full moon is visible in the background.
Photography of a computer screen showing the Ekos astrophotography software during an astrophotography session. The preview on the screen shows a close-up of the Bubble Nebula.

@jdlbt everybody's all excited about the moon, but I just want to get back to my normally scheduled DSO imaging (I'm also shooting NB tonight, but Elephant Trunk)

Just uploaded a few more pictures from my spectacular Philippines trip! This time we've got a teeny tiny "leaf sheep" nudibranch, a peacock Mantis Shrimp, a porcelain crab, and a bobtail squid.

This is the last one, and I'm less than trilled with it. It's called the Lion Nebula, I've never tried it before, and it's tricky. And before you tell me it doesn't look like a lion, it does if you're doing it right.

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@catherineryanhyde I went hubble-ish on mine to make it gold like a lion, but I really like this is color palette!

Made my first "real" application: an interactive folder structure generator for multi-night imaging to feed into PixInsight's WBPP.

Is it clunky? Yes.
Does it work? Yes.

@ManyWorldsAstro_ nice! I wrote some scripts to manage my files, link in the appropriate calibration frames, etc. Tricky stuff, but super nice once it's working.

As a last gasp shot before the clouds rolled in last night I targeted the Helix Nebula for 30 minutes (15x120s). I’m not a nebula guy, but as the saying goes, “make hay while the gas is glowing.”

More bucket list creatures from Dumaguete! Flamboyant cuttlefish walk around the sea floor looking for small fish and crustaceans. When they find one, they slowly extend their two specialized feeding arms and snap out in the blink of an eye to grab their prey. A fellow diver and I spent 20 minutes with a single cuttlefish watching it walk and feed repeatedly. Video coming soon!

Work in Progress! This is the beautiful Helix Nebula, sometimes referred to as the "Eye of God". This is the only planetary nebula I can reasonably capture with my widefield scope. It is very low in the night sky, rising to only 27 degrees above the horizon from my location but I was able to get almost 4 hours on it. I will add more time over the next month to bring out the finer details. Off to a great start!

webcubus,

@Teri_Kanefield @GottaLaff @Bam Thank you for the detailed walkthrough! It seems at least the Special Counsel and team are well-prepared for the Trump playbook. Given how close to the line Trump is walking without crossing, I wonder if he's actually listening to his attorneys a little where he hasn't in the past.

I've mostly stopped taking videos while diving in favor of still images, but I couldn't resist taking some video of these charismatic blue ring octopus. A still image just can't capture the hypnotic pulsing of those blue rings or the way they move around the ocean floor.

Blue Ring Octopus are famous for their venomous bite and their vibrant color. Despite their large personalities, they are small in stature. The fourth image below shows the octopus next to a regular-sized marble. It was a delight to watch this species flash its colors, walk around the sea floor, and even interact with a nearby fish.

Ornate ghost pipefish can be very challenging to photograph as they are specifically camouflaged to their favorite hangouts. We saw them nearly every dive in Dumaguete, Philippines, so I was able to be selective and only image when they were against favorable backgrounds.

Today was yet another awesome dive day despite the Coast Guard sending us back to shore after our first dive due to rough conditions (it has been the same for a couple days now - not sure why today was special) and a tiny camera leak. This may have been my best photography day despite only having 2 photography dives.

Included photos: ornate ghost pipefish, "Shaun the sheep" nudibranch, robust ghost pipefish, and painted frogfish.
