I asked @jdickerson to federate his account and he did. I guess my endless asks aren't completely useless... go go .

Who is gonna prove their purity more this November in battleground states, lefties refusing to vote for Biden or ancaps refusing to vote for Trump? In solid red or blue states, I'm all for voting your conscience.

I'm glad exists but a better format is actually what does on occasion. Two experts who disagree but also know how to talk to regular people, discussing an issue for a few hours, with a smart fair and funny moderator. Maybe fact checkers too. Entertaining and educational. Targeted towards audio-only consumption so folks have time to listen while doing other things like driving, chores or exercising. That's what's needed to get the most people better informed.

People are biased. We always think we know shit that we don't. Given the chance, we will bias you too. For what we perceive as your own good. But the better good is always found by putting all of our eyes and brains on it. Systems that do that are never our first choice because they might lead to conclusions we disagree with, but luckily, most of us will choose them as our next best option. That's democracy. That's science. That's a mixed economy. That's the .

When thinking about Elon and X, please also consider this. If a place for speech gets accepted as the most open and popular, then what's popular there will be claimed as speaking for the general public. Winning in the public square matters.

But of course X is not a public square. It's a place where lefties increasingly feel unwelcome cause of harassment. But its use by big names keeps telling the world that it matters. We must displace it, by limiting harassment but not speech here.

Bunnyslope,
@Bunnyslope@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos By your definition, it’s protected speech, so it should not be censored or “limited”.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Bunnyslope

speech that cannot be limited by the government, might still not be allowed in my house. or if being expressed in a public space, might still lead people having a nice conversation about the issues of the day, to get up and leave.

say whatever horrible shit you want but it will probably mean nobody will stick around to hear your genius explanation about how to handle poverty. swear and the people with their kids at the public meeting might leave. this isn't that hard edgelords.

The fix for is to embrace poor white men's interests along with those of women, racial minorities, gay and trans folk. MAGA paints itself as about them but it isn't. It's for the middle and upper class white men who think all these gains are coming at their expense, and they get PR cover by appearing to stand for their lower class brothers. Raise them up with all the other long forgotten people and the energy behind MAGA dies.

For a little while, was my favorite podcast. They'd talk more about the news than joking about their personal lives in elite circles, cared about more than just bashing the left and regularly had on people they disagreed with (even regarding stuff they are passionate about like Israel and Ukraine). Now they are like libertarian neo cons. It's not supposed to be possible yet here we are. Still worth listening to but I'm sorry to the people I recommended the show to.

takash,
@takash@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos , you recommended this to me a few weeks ago, but honestly, I haven’t listened yet. Why and where did they go off course?

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@takash

my guess is one of the guys (Moynihan) just doesn't want to sound like an idiot/asshole trying to respond to criticism of his support for Netanyahu and hatred of Putin. there used to be more of a mix of the three but now the other two barely say anything.

Could we collectively create a database of all songs somewhere?

ampache,
@ampache@fosstodon.org avatar

@wjmaggos @metabrainz @dogmazic @errhead

Just had a look at the seed details and for license I would use a url relationship. Ampache has URLs for the licenses so that's how I would seed it.

metabrainz,
@metabrainz@mastodon.social avatar

@ampache @wjmaggos @dogmazic @errhead correct, in MB licences are set by URL relationships: https://beta.musicbrainz.org/relationship/004bd0c3-8a45-4309-ba52-fa99f3aa3d50

There is a forum thread discussing a few of the ways to search by licence: https://community.metabrainz.org/t/is-there-a-way-to-search-recordings-by-license/281009
There may be other ways as well.

If you have a library with MBID’s already (accurately) assigned, and the licence is defined in your tags/database somewhere, then that is a good example of something that could be automated - setting recording or album cc relationships from tags. -a

Back in my day (class of 96), you kinda had to choose. Most kids liked them all but was your favorite band Nirvana, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam? I wouldn't have said it then but Nirvana wanted you to think they were cool. Edgy. Soundgarden just wanted to make good music. Pearl Jam was about community and purpose. Fuck Ticketmaster.

Wait, Bon Jovi? ...musically not bad, a little "schmaltzy" for my taste, but compared to Bryan Adams etc probably pretty restrained.

No AC/DC? Surely you have at least one Metallica album in your collection.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@amerika @makeheroism

yes I do. pretty wide taste but what was interesting about the 90s imo was that the mainstream opened up, before the internet made access easier. I think it also got better because it basically became more democratic. less payola.

but I still care about what most people are listening to. I want that to be higher quality, just like I want the journalism most people consume to be better. it matters if we have to live with each other.

is again telling me they are shutting down. I want to be nice but they could have built sustainable services within the ecosystem. It would have helped everyone thrive. They knew that. They weren't as ignorant of the options as most of their users. They could have helped improve any problems or deficiencies they identified in what was already available. instead they wanted to be the hero and get rich. I guess I'm sorry they fell for the Hollywood version of capitalism.

what is a CEO doing that makes them worth paying millions of dollars per year? don't they usually have lots of other people also paid very well helping them make every decision?

black6,

@wjmaggos They have their head on the chopping block. Generally speaking, the further up the corporate ladder you go, the less work you have to do because, as you said, you have lots of other people helping out and doing the work.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@black6

so wasting less money on CEO pay requires making the corporations smaller, right? break them apart. make them responsible for less.
