worldwidewave,

How about a minimum wage increase while the economy is so strong?

This country belongs to the ultra-rich, we just live here.

House to vote on 45-day funding extension to stave off government shutdown (www.cbsnews.com)

With hours to go before a government shutdown is poised to go into effect, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Saturday he would try to push a short-term funding bill through the House with Democratic help — a move that could keep government open but puts his speakership at risk....

worldwidewave,

Ughh, this is West Virginia. A democrat being elected is a miracle in a Trump +39 state.

worldwidewave,

They want to make sure that the next jury thinks twice about convicting. Truly chilling and completely unsurprising after Trump has been stoking them with lies every day.

worldwidewave,

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin has refused calls to bring Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts in for a formal hearing on the issue. Instead, he and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, another senior Democrat on the panel, merely asked Roberts to push Alito to recuse himself on cases related to the 2020 election and to come in for a meeting. According to White House aides, President Joe Biden is reluctant to engage on the controversy because he fears that criticizing the conservative justices will undermine the court’s legitimacy as well as the president’s claim to be a supporter of the country’s democratic institutions and norms

Deepfake of U.S. Official Appears After Shift on Ukraine Attacks in Russia (www.nytimes.com)

The fabricated video, which is drawn from actual footage, shows the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, seeming to suggest that the Russian city of Belgorod, just 25 miles north of Ukraine’s border with Russia, was a legitimate target for such strikes....

worldwidewave,

And especially don’t do that in furtherance of another crime in NY. Cookin’ the books is just a misdemeanor.

If it was the NFL season, some conservative player would take a knee in protest.

worldwidewave,

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Sadly, it seems like people are remembering the past and eagerly trying to resuscitate it. I’m worried about the next decade in Europe

worldwidewave,

Dougan, a former Marine and police officer, fled his home in Florida in 2016 to evade criminal charges related to a massive doxxing campaign he was accused of launching against public officials and was given asylum by the Russian government. Most recently, Dougan has posed as a journalist in Ukraine’s Donbas region, testifying at Russian public hearings and making frequent appearances on Russian state TV.

Oh look, an old school traitor. I wish him a swift military drafting by his new home.

American here (who’s a fanatical lover of HIGNFY and British politics); lemme take a crack at it. Please correct me where I misspeak, Brits!

Diane Abbott has had to deal with scandals for much of her whole time in power, many of which have come from her saying dumb shit, like Mao did more good than harm. Now, as the first Black MP, one could argue that these were outsized scandals, blown up by the British rags, but still.

The most recent scandal came when she lost the Labour whip job for saying Jews experience prejudice, not racism. That scandal ran up until the general election was called last week, where it was unclear if she’d be selected to run again in her seat. She adamantly wanted to (and seems like she will stand), and party leadership was very indirect about if they’d let her, despite the whip being restored.

It looks like she’ll be running again now, but it’s just been so messy on the Labour side, and really hasn’t made Keir or his party leadership look great. In an election where Rishi and the Tory’s are self-destructing, it should be an easy Labour win if they don’t keep fighting with themselves.

Obrador, the outgoing president and Sheinbaum’s political mentor, congratulated Sheinbaum on her win.

“With all my affection and respect I congratulate Claudia Sheinbaum who came out victorious with an ample margin. She will be the first (female) President of Mexico… but also the President, possibly, with most votes obtained in all of the history of our country,” he said in a video posted on X.

Seems on track to be the largest win since 1982, which was a non-competitive election. This is a really impressive result.

worldwidewave,

This is the MAGA litmus test. If they don’t answer this question right, Trump won’t pick them for any cabinet positions. They’re all angling for power in a Trump White House.

worldwidewave,

Trump’s unfavorability among Republicans has hovered around 20% for a while now.

worldwidewave,

The benefits have flowed from Trump’s businesses and campaign committees, according to a ProPublica analysis of public disclosures, court records and securities filings. One campaign aide had his average monthly pay double, from $26,000 to $53,500. Another employee got a $2 million severance package barring him from voluntarily cooperating with law enforcement. And one of the campaign’s top officials had her daughter hired onto the campaign staff, where she is now the fourth-highest-paid employee.

Absolutely nothing to see here, just some classic American cronyism /s

“Man who brandished gun and threatened elected official member of far-right militia”

Like, yea, that checks out.

If George Santos could get onto the US House with the tiniest bit of scrutiny, I’m not surprised that anyone else was elected despite being unqualified for whatever reason.

It’s scary how many bad people are hoping that Trump wins, from Putin and Xi and their fellow autocrats (e.g. Orban, Kim). Then there’s BB and his right wing cabinet, as Trump won’t give a fuck how many Palestinians die in the war.

All of American’s billionaires and business interests want the tax write off and general cronyism that he enables. And his far right support groups seem to be regrouping and growing.

If there’s going to be election malfeasance, it could come from a variety of sources, not necessarily the usual suspects.

worldwidewave,

I wanna hear the story from the POV of the Americans who picked up a hitchhiking method actor in full blackface.
