I have a question for experts in Roses.

The leaves of my roses were fine before I started to deadhead the dying roses.

After doing this I noticed caterpillars ate the leaves.

My question is: does deadheading the roses attract the caterpillars? If yes what should be done about it?

Family ride, with bits of rail trail today, but first let’s enjoy some sights along the way.

A large but tightly packed 4 story house (apartments)
No explanation given for sign saying: Please NO GOLFING

@jerzone
I'd like the NO GOLFING sign for my yard. Out of context, to me it just reads:

"Golfing is s a stupid, classist, elitist sport, and golf courses are a wasteful destruction of natural areas of benefit to noone, and JUST STOP IT!"

#psa Okay, learned a lesson today. I either missed this or the setting changed in an update. Both #OneDrive and #Dropbox have a setting for keeping all the files in the cloud rather than on your Mac, downloading them as you need them. This means that if you need them and the service is responding poorly, or you have no connectivity, you can't get to your files. If you use #scrivener, for example, which syncs through dropbox, this can cause sync errors between devices!

Both services appear to set all files online only. Both services have a way to change this to ensure all files are downloaded for offline use.

#Writers, #authors, as well as #artists, I strongly suggest you keep your files on disk as well as in the cloud. Change these settings now!

Everything around the house has been trampled and compacted from the restoration project. Trying seeds to get as many plants as I can, including annuals, to fill in.

Finally started seeds I should have started weeks ago:

  • Corydalis flavula, Yellow Corydalis, an annual
  • Cuphea viscosissima, Clammy Waxweed, an annual
  • Monarda fistulosa, Bee Balm

I've got other seeds stratifying in the fridge. Again, weeks late, but we'll see what happens.

My garden is managed as habitat, not just for "pretty flowers". Aside from aesthetic damage from the work, I worry about the arthropods that make their homes in my garden, especially the ground-nesting bees.

So far, I've seen 6 different bee species flying in my garden. That's encouraging. But my Amelanchier is in full bloom, and there's nothing visiting it. It should be covered with bumble bees, mining bees, and more.

A happy day today for me and "My Little Bees": The Colletes, cellophane bees, have emerged, and by the dozens! This despite having their habitat trampled band compacted during construction.

They are especially numerous in the area that I not only forked, but overturned. There is little activity in the forked-only areas, and none at all in the still-compacted spots.

So, I am relieved, and have hope the population will recover.

Quite frankly, that's very rude of the day to get here without notifying me first.

Have decided to try to do a 1.0 release on a useful but neglected piece of code. Oops, poor test coverage. Filling it in, expectedly finding bugs.

Wondering if this is a good place for an LLM code extruder? “Write unit tests that cover as many possible lines of code.” You wouldn’t get smart unit tests, but even dumb coverage is immensely better than none. Because a lot of the bugs unit tests find are dumb shit anyhow. And retroactively improving test coverage is boring.

xris,
@xris@ecoevo.social avatar

@joshrivers @timbray
My professional past experience as a team lead:

  • Unit testing tests the code. You still need tests for each "unit" of assembly, interaction, integration, etc.

  • Code coverage tells you if you have too few tests. It can't say if you have enough.

When we (I) emphasized code coverage, we got high coverage. But did the tests ever fail?

No. No, they did not.

  • Mutation testing tests the tests. Did any test fail? No? Now we fix the miss assertions.

It reminds me of the scene in "Young Frankenstein" at the well, when the little girl says to the monster, "What shall we throw in now?"
