I guess no more private groups on Twitter anymore. I wonder, when will Mastodon wil implement actual federated groups, which can provide the Circle-like feature, but on the Fediverse. :neocat_think:

@chikorita157 I think it would be better implemented outside of Mastodon. For privacy reasons. Not that the group would be suuuper private, but all things Mastodon is pretty open.

I’d love to use the same accounts etc, but I don’t feel I could do more private things there. Imho.

It is a wanted feature though I’m sure.

It seems that the Lenovo Legion Go received some good reviews given that it's even faster than the ROG Ally, the big screen, and that trackpad while being around the same size of the Steam Deck. As always, the Steam Deck fanboys are out bashing the Lenovo Go like they did with the ROG Ally and saying the Steam Deck is better and there is no competition.

The Steam Deck community is toxic, which is no wonder why I'm so glad to get rid of it, especially for the fact it's uncomfortable for me. If you don't like it, just enjoy the device you have. Don’t worship corporations, they aren't your friends.

Competition is good, you shouldn't be afraid of it.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Corporations aren’t friends, or even friendly.

Steams business model was “be everywhere we can, with software”. They are being very very boneheaded by not expanding SteamOS to other devices. It will be their undoing imho.

How long before MS releases an XBox handheld OS for these devices? Should be pretty easy for them. Then steam are 110% locked out, as it’s XBox store or take a hike.

It would be super interesting to have dinner with Valve leadership. You’d be surprised how much they love to talk. Because I do not understand their freaking end game here. Makes no sense to me.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Putting aside fanboy-ism, I can’t figure out the Deck.

If there’s no follow up, where does it go? It doesn’t have the market of the Switch, and while it can certainly play older/smaller titles, it’s not flag ship.

So how do they grow? They sell software, but are restricting their platform (the give away part), in this case SteamOS, so it can’t grow to sell more software (the change for part).

It’s not a loss leader (then they would license SteamOS), it’s not long term (then we’d get updates), and they aren’t getting into hardware properly (difficult to do).

Was it just a fun one off? It’s impossible to know from the outside. They won’t say (no sane company would). There might be a Deck 2 and they aren’t talking.

Either way I would be actually surprised if MS just sleeps this one away. Feels like exactly their game. Software to sell software, dump hardware on everyone else and race to the bottom.

I mean Windows already runs on these, can’t be that hard to get the XBox OS/front end to be handheld too.

I mean I don’t want it, I want more players not fewer (MS is big as is), but Valve seems to either don’t have a clue, or struggling.

Caveat Emptor: Zero insight from my end, as in no insider info.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Without a Deck 2 it’s over, which is extra odd as it isn’t really a failure afaik.

A lot of the older stuff felt more like failures.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Yeah it’s ok to like something more, not so ok to be unpleasant about it.

There was always some rivalries. Like Amiga vs Atari, Mac vs PC, Nintendo vs Sega, PS vs XBox. Which is fine when it’s kept friendly.

I was browsing TrashTaste on a long while back, and saw this ear cleaning video.

I just went for it. 9200 yen for ear cleaning and a head/shoulder massage was a bit on the high side :leafeonmoney: but I got to converse in Japanese instead of just short questions and replies.

I had cat hairs in one ear, and one hair from a haircut in the other. At least my ears are cleaner than Connor's.

Both Tanaka-san and Chiba-san both read manga, but do not consider themselves fans, which is what I expected. Manga is just another medium to a regular Japanese person, and it's not really that common to identify as 'liking manga' even if they do read it.

Warning, video contains camera in ears.

The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch. What’s people’s thoughts on the show? I’m curious.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I have to read them after the episodes because I’m so spoiler sensitive :)

I feel it’s a concept that has far more potential, but the show somehow feels like those short filler episodes when a show is trying to catch up to the manga. Just only those episodes.

Wish they’d made the young witch 20 instead as well. Some stuff gets, ehm, you know. The concept would have worked just fine anyways.

I think I needed a flimsy dumb show though, so that’s good. Don’t want anything too emotional to be honest. Though one episode hit me bad anyways.

chikorita157, to apple
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

While I’m not upgrading until probably 2025 the earliest, the amount of upselling is unsettling.

Also, only 8 GB of RAM on the base model 14” Macbook Pro in 2023. That is the most egregious.

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/31/apple-m3-pro-less-memory-bandwidth/

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 The memory sizes are stupid:( The prices worse:(

But i believe there’s a reason for that memory bandwidth that people haven’t thought about. The whole thing isn’t at all set up like an x86 with DIMM slots architecture after all. I haven’t dove into it, but it sounds like it should be fine or better.

I think the best Apple has made are their SoCs, by far. They keep being fantastic.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 ARM SoCs/CPUs can have sockets just fine. The M class SoCs can’t because, afaik, it’s properly part of the SoC. It’s a really fast design.

My issue is the price. If could pay premium over a non-Mac and get 32-64GB I’d be ok. 128GB for a studio. But I can’t, it’s insane luxury prices that just feels like gauging.

Apple always overcharged, but it’s gotten silly now:(

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 There has to be a point where people (and companies!) go “fuck this” and stop buying. I still feel bad about how much I paid for my iMac:(

I think a fair bit of developers would be happy to move to Linux for work machines at this point. Most dev stuff runs there after all (and in many cases runs better), and many don’t like Windows.

Apple has lost touch with a lot of people I think. I really used to love their products:( Now I just get sad/frustrated by new software releases and unhappy about the insane prices:(

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 Agreed, with the caveat that Linux/*BSD isn’t at all bad if one could put another UX on it and more devs would move over. The number of people working on any Linux desktop anything is dwarfed by the rest after all. So we’ll see.

I mean I’m not one of the “year of the Linux Desktop” people:) My gripes with Linux DE goes back to the 90s (!). But there’s no other viable OSes out there unless you start from scratch.

(Also since I’m a retro enthusiast and old as sin, I’ve seen a lot of OSes over the years. So I think I’m more forgiving in certain ways.)

But yes, you are mimicking many of my own feelings here. It’s kind of bleak outlook right now.

@yon What do you think about the new M3 chips.

Personally I’m not upgrading yet, but I have a feeling that they would outperform the so called Snapdragon Elite X, which only apparently best the M2 lines of chips.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I kinda feel the same about all the new M ones when they were released. Love the SoC, hate the notch so very much, and the prices are absolutely stupid beyond belief.

Love to have a 128GB M3 Max, but I could buy a car for that:(

If I get myself an M I think a 16GB M1 Mac mini (used) might be in my future. Curious of trying out Linux on it :)

But for my main “serious” machine the iMac will have to run until it breaks. Runs every bit as well as it did day 1, and faster than anything I need :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 I’m on the fence on how much I want to Mac in the future. As you say the prices have skyrocketed and it’s getting out of hand:(

I would love a studio, but it’s just so dang expensive:( I’m fine with paying premium, but now it’s luxery. Can’t see how the dang SoC and memory/disk can cost that much!

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 $1,999 for 32GB isn’t happy me. Plus I need a screen (a good one). It’s simply too much of an investment at this point in my life:(

Gnome is awful, not going there. KDE is so so-ish. Wish they used Windows as a warning instead of blueprint.

And Windows is a hard no on my part, as you know:) No piece of software is good enough for me to deal with, that. Ever.

Bah. End of an era for me. Miss Jobs. I felt excited about Apple when he was around.

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 If I put it this way, I get 20-30GB swap regularly on my work laptop:( I need my RAM. I just have a lot of stuff running.

What irritates me is that MacOS should be Pro but isn’t. There’s so much dumb stuff in it, so many bugs, so much unfinished, so many UI issues these days, etc.

Imho they should be on a 3-5 year cadence instead of yearly. Stop the damn change for the sake of change stupidity.

I’ve wanted a new UI for Linux for decades. I think KDE would have been so much better if it had tried to copy MacOS instead of Windows.

I think I would be fully happy with Linux for doing work stuff. But less happy for personal use.

I have opinions about Linux though. But you do not have that much time :)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@chikorita157 You sound like me from a few years ago:) Minus that I ran Linux for years back in the dark ages probably.

It’s also about perspective. The lack of MS and Adobe software is for me a bonus. I honestly want to get away from the big corporations with my use of Linux. BUT I’m not silly enough to think that’s universal.

I still rank anything Linux higher than Windows. I can not stand that stuff:( Drives me bonkers.

And yes, I want a different UI so bad:(

Question time. What is it with Anime and giant boobs and giant boob jokes? Especially connect to under 18 characters? Are the Japanese just that obsessed, or is there something else going on?

Been watching a few episodes of that Irregular Witch show. Which is a pretty funny and low key show and all that. But I couldn’t go suggest it randomly, because Oppai all over the place.

Compare it to SpyxFamily or KumaKumaKumaBear which doesn’t have those issues.

And I’m not exactly a prude, I find sexuality to be fine. But dang, it’s a bit much.

This is why you can put the logo of a sports team on a car, but not an anime character, without ridicule.

(I have zero anything beyond what I legally must have on my real car. Anime characters on cars in video games like Forza.)

yon,
@yon@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Would it be fair to say that the “don’t bother other people or be in their business” mentality is partway causing this? I quite enjoy that aspect (I want to be left alone and I want it quiet etc, unless I’m seeking out others) but I can’t help but feel that if has downsides:(

I hope the next generations can start cleaning this up. Not because of my “western ideals”, but simply because I think people are genuinely being hurt and exploited.

Fan service isn’t, imho, an overall good thing.

@chikorita157 I still say Chuck the cheaters into their own place and let them cheat with each other.

I think the competitive, esport, ranking stuff has worsen the cheating from griefing to even more.

As far as single player goes, I’d say cheat your heart out. Your game, your life, your thing.

But just as piracy, cheating should never mean anything is worse for paying customers. It’s just, imho, wrong. :(
