We’re doing a 2nd iteration of our / Meetup in tonight at @HSBXL :)

And a 3rd one, Monday 13th of May, at BeCentral this time! There will be again pizzas 🍕 paid by the foundation (with Vegan options), and I will bring my X230 (on which I installed last weekend) for a little demo :D

As a I believe it would make sense to make food at entirely plant-based. Maybe next year?

(Hoping the fries were vegan, in Belgium fries often aren't even vegetarian, and only vegans seem to know this)

On the plus side, statistics on vegan burgers were not bad though. WDYT?

yvan,
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@janneke I was pleasantly surprised last year when I attended Days and discovered that The Vegan Butcher’s (https://veganbutcher.be/) food was being served, so I was really happy to see it was the same this year :) I’m noticing more and more vegan options at tech events, but I most often bring my own food because the average vegan choices are usually not very appealing… However, the vegan burger from the food truck was nice, and the Guix Days lunch was once again delicious, I’m truly grateful for that!

@domenkozar Ocean Sprint edition in Thailand instead of the Canary Islands? I would love to attend one of those events if it’s easily accessible from Belgium by train :) … Have fun hacking on Nix!

@typeswitch Oooh, that’s what I’ve been drinking every morning since I quit coffee a few months ago! It’s called « Caroube » in French, and I must admit that I prefer its taste to chocolate powder :)

yvan,
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@xavier @typeswitch off topic, I just realized today that the font used on this packaging is, of course, « Papyrus » … haha

I’ve been using https://phanpy.social by @cheeaun for about a month now, and I love every part of it! It really has a great , and I believe it meets most needs of the average user. It also works like a charm as a Home Screen shortcut on mobile. Please give it a try :)

There’s a lot more tweaking and theming to be done, but my minimal terminal is slowly coming together.

(Yes, there are wires. Deal with it.)

@clarkema Oooh! I can recognise the UHK, but what are the e-ink screen / tablet you’re using here?

Also, I’m trying to organize a recurring “Lambda Brussels” meetup. We had one session last week https://www.meetup.com/belgium-rust-user-group/events/297538601/, and I was surprised and happy to meet IRL some folks from Numtide! The next iteration should be in January :)

@julienmalka but most commits goes in « nix-config » and « home », the average NixOS experience of spending more time on fine tuning our systems’ configuration rather than everything else :p

Brussel has made me realize that my French is not good, but it's also not that bad. Reading worked, ordering as well, as did asking and giving directions. I haven't spoken French for 25 years, so I think that's pretty great.

yvan, (edited )
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@deadparrot Your French was quite fluent and grammatically good! (même si dans le souvenir que j’ai de notre conversation, tu avais déjà bu plus d’une bière :)

I am excited. Are you?

@musicmatze I am! (even if I mainly attended the hallway track yesterday) happy to meet and share a coffee with other Nix/Rust hackers :) I wear a black ZuriHac shirt!

Happy to discuss FFI (again) this Wednesday: learn “How to write a package in ?” at https://rust-on-web.glitch.me! This will follow my participation in the @eurorust impl room and (once again) a short introduction workshop of mine :)

This event wouldn’t be possible without @Nicolas_ho, who meticulously handled all the organizational details! He’ll also be giving an introductory talk on WebAssembly :)

yvan,
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@eurorust I forgot to mention that a recording is available here https://youtu.be/lt8GXgbK2m8 (with subtitles hopefully coming soon, if I find the courage to finish writting them, so you can understand my strong French accent)!

Just got home from NixCon, super glad to be home. This NixCon was super well organized with a great venue, great food, etc. I am super grateful to the organizing team. I think the talks were interesting and I was happy to be able to be part of the Nix community governance discussions. But…
It was also a bit underwhelming for me. It felt like a remake of last year NixCon. A majority of the speakers were the same, same people hosting the event, etc.

yvan, (edited )
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@julienmalka Thanks for your feedback! I sadly got the exact same impression ... I blame myself a bit for (even if I'm not exactly new to Nix) not being involved in core project development and most community discussions online. But yes, I would say that NixCon (and more generally the Nix projects and community) could be made more inclusive, in particular to newcomers.

yvan, (edited )
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@julienmalka I think a bit about it and so far my quick analysis of the issue (which I believe is common in functional programming communities) is: the ratio of users of the technology X vs. the core developers of X are really different than what we can found in (IDK that's a wild guess) a JS, Python or Docker conference. It's because we're de facto a group of clever hackers that succeed in finding a way to understand and use X even if it's non-mainstream and user-unfriendly... and that the best (maybe only way) to understand X is to hack on it! That sentiment of not being the average developer (and being somewhat proud of it) is easy to turn into: "I don't want to loose my energy in helping X to be accessible for the average developer (they would be of no help in improving it anyway, because all the smart people are already in the room you know...), I prefer avoid success at all costs, so I can continue to do fun hacking on my custom stuffs" :')

yvan, (edited )
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@julienmalka ... and I can't 100% blame this reasoning. Because tech is full of people that take up too much space. So it's better be between smart pretentious folks than dumb (and still pretentious) ones ... I'm just overall sad about how not inclusive that could be. At least we're not tech bros, but still there are a lot of underrepresented people that do not show up in NixCon! The cultural and technical barriers that need to be crossed in order to access the knowledge of the cool stuff makes that really hard to someone without good friends already versed into the cool stuff ... I used to think that was the one thing that the Rust project succeeded, to make it surprisingly inclusive and beginner friendly, I'm not sure if that still holds?

yvan, (edited )
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@julienmalka ... and indeed the big issue of an ambitious project owned by a small team is that the core team members are close to burnout and do not have much time or mental space to share key knowledge (and even with a lot of good intentions, appears inaccessible as they are constantly demanded by other people's) ... They have to deal first with urgent matters, and as there are not a lot of other Nix family reunions, NixCon served this team meeting purpose. Then, I hope to see more Nix User Groups or MeetUp happening soon to catch up more often! I also believe that the foundation could only help in getting a better grasp of the Nix project roadmap :)

I'll be giving a lightning talk at 2023 titled "Compiling to : A Quick Overview". Preview the working draft of the slides here https://github.com/yvan-sraka/nix-talks/blob/main/NixCon2023.pdf, feedbacks are welcome! See you there :)

yvan,
@yvan@functional.cafe avatar

@sandro I believe so?! (That's what I had in mind while doing the slides). If I recall correctly, that was also the time slot given to lightning talks at previous and FOSDEM devroom. Can @nixos_org confirm?
