I've got a phd in physics and dabble with complex systems, graphs, networks and optimization for a living. Currently trying to understand congestion in urban traffic.

My home and car are almost 100% solar powered. Love running, biking and sailing. My bike is not electric. Learning to surf.

ridere di qualcosa ci fa sentire più in grado di controllarlo, lo sottostimiamo, e poi ci fotte.

Comunque voglio dire, abbiamo capito che ai tennisti piace allenarsi a montecarlo. Anche a me piace andare in francia o in spagna, ma non è che cambio la residenza e ci pago le tasse. Cioè, puoi pure stare qualche settimana all'anno a mc, ma non inventiamo scuse davvero ridicole. Paga il 50% di tasse qui in Italia e resti iper ricco lo stesso cazzo.

Quello che mi fa perdere la fiducia nel genere umano sono i commenti all'articolo sul post, in genere scritti da gente razionale, che inneggiano tutti al "se guadagnaste 70 M euro all'anno vorrei vedere voi dove avreste la residenza".

Ma dico io, se ti restano 35 milioni all'anno netti, hai paura di fare la fame? Puoi comprarti solo 30 case invece di 60? Volevi davvero 30 case e 50 Ferrari?

Penso di aver messo a fuoco perché non mi è mai fregato granché della Storia: è costituita per la quasi totalità da una lista interminabile di conflitti, guerre, stragi, assedi, incoronazioni, detronazioni, carestie, pazzi egocentrici e assetati di sangue dipinti come condottieri.

Gengis-Khan, Alessandro Magno, Giulio Cesare, Napoleone, Nabuccodonosor, Ramsete II, Annibale.

Come se la Storia dell'umanità fosse solo questo ridicolo risiko e non la vità della gente normale, degli agricoltori, degli studiosi e degli artisti che hanno continuato a vivere nonostante quei pazzi furiosi facessero di tutto per impedirglielo.

Sì, certo. Quando rivendi qualcosa che acquisti per X, come puoi fare un prezzo inferiore a X?

La situazione elettrica è simile a quella dei carburanti: qui in Sardegna ad esempio la stragrande maggioranza è prodotta in una sola raffineria e poi rimarchiata in mille modi. Dovrebbero spiegarmi come possono questi rivenditori far pagare meno del prezzo di produzione. Infatti non succede.

Liberalizzare questi mercati è una presa in giro tremenda.

The muon is a particle very much like an electron but about 207 times heavier. You can make an atom like hydrogen with a muon orbiting a proton! It's called 'muonic hydrogen'.

Muonic hydrogen is 207 times smaller than hydrogen. But the muon moves at the same average speed as the electron does in hydrogen: about 1/137 times the speed of light. This is pretty fast by human standards.

Unfortunately a muon doesn't live for long: its half-life is roughly a microsecond, and then it decays into an electron and some junk.

But relativity says that time passes more slowly for a fast-moving object. So a muon must live a bit longer when it's in muonic hydrogen. So I wondered: has anyone detected this effect?

Unfortunately the answer is "not yet, because the effect is too small". But we're getting close to being able to do it.

Interestingly, the lifetime increase due to relativity is 60 times smaller than the lifetime decrease due to the muon being captured by the proton it's orbiting! And that is an effect we can measure:

Resoconto energetico di fine anno. Impianto FV da 6.6kW con accumulo da 15kWh, 27° di inclinazione, orientamento circa 160°, Sud Sardegna.

Bilancio energetico annuale totale 77% autoprodotto. L'energia consumata include il riscaldamento con PDC e pavimento radiante a 35C e, da settembre, un'auto elettrica con batteria da 40 kWh (8000 km in 3 mesi).
A dicembre ho comunque autoprodotto il 50% del fabbisogno nonostante un piccolo guasto a un magnetotermico per 3gg.

Spero possa servire a qualcuno per farsi un'idea.

Here is a 2.38 billion pixel 360° mosaic taken by Mars rover Perseverance from a location named “Airey Hill”, where the rover was parked during the recent solar conjunction.

Mounted on the crossbeam in the back above the RTG power source is a plate with some interesting markings and a coded message.

Let's take a closer look at the graphic on that plate.

(Yes, the mosaic has not been put together very well.)

@AkaSci Wow, that must be the worst example of Morse code ever written: I'm a ham radio operator and know CW, but that's just a mess. In Morse code you respect the 3:1 length between lines and dots. So no, just don't use CW if you're gonna write it that bad, use the normal letters.

Qualche tempo fa ho letto un articolo (Internazionale? New Yorker?) sulla nostra percezione distorta rispetto a come valutiamo le persone quando osserviamo qualcuno che dovrebbe rappresentare un qualche ideale e fa un piccolissimo passo falso e allora ci viene facile attribuire a questa cosa un peso enorme, anche rispetto a uno che è sempre andato del tutto contro a quell'ideale, ma che diamo per scontato che si comporti "male" e quindi la nostra idea ne risente meno.

Esempio: Greta Thunberg getta una cartaccia per strada e immediatamente il movimento perde credibilità, ma se lo facesse chenesò, Chicco Testa, nessuno lo noterebbe 😄

Avete idea di cosa stia parlando? Ha un nome psicologico questo effetto? Vi viene in mente l'articolo che ne parlava e non trovo più?

@AkaSci yeah, and it wasn't exactly pleasant for us. so most of us are fine without having more people. I know that the normal user point of view (discussing, knowing new interesting people, etc) is totally different from somebody looking to grow their audience and use mastodon as a broadcast channel. but that is exactly what kills a social network: one-to-many communication.

I was at the Real Camera shop in Manchester and saw a Mamiya medium format camera in person. I wish I had the 800 pounds to drop on it 😅 Bought an amber lens filter instead to see if I can get better colors in this weather.
