Here's my year in a spreadsheet.

  • At 22 books, shooting for 40 so I'm barely on track.

  • Favorite reads: Definitely Demian by Hermann Hesse and Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I knew I was going to like Grapes, as I loved East of Eden and I'm a leftist so Grapes is a match made in heaven for me. But Demian was a big surprise at how much I loved it. It just... scratched a certain itch in my soul I didn't know I had. It also kind of reminded me of The Picture of Dorian Gray is a weird way? Which is one of my favorite books of all time.

  • Least favorite reads The Unbearable Lightness of Being was not a great read for me. Occasionally there were moments of philosophical profundity and some pretty prose but for the most part I found the themes a bit pretentious, the characters all awful, and a non-engaging plot. Shoutout to Anthem. I despise Ayn Rand as a person, and The Fountainhead was the worst book I've ever read, but Anthem wasn't terrible? It was probably bottom 5 for the year, no doubt, but I didn't hate it.

Andjhostet,

Nice! Dune is a bit of a beast. I reread it last year, and read the sequel, Dune Messiah this year. I can't say I loved DM (not as much as Dune anyways), it felt like a book that existed entirely to set up the next book? I'll probably keep reading the series but I'm definitely taking a bit of a break.

Did you watch the movie first? My wife found that the movie really helped her connect all the weird names and characters together without getting overwhelmed.

This may be a dumb question but how do I create a new thread in a magazine? When I click on the "+" button in the top right of Kbin, I have the options: Add new Link, Add New Article, Add New Photo, Add New Post, Add New video, Create New Magazine.

I would have thought "Add New Post" was the right choice, but that brings me here, to the microblog. How do I just create a new text only thread? I'm surprised it's this unintuitive for me, considering the entire point of this site. Is it "Add article?"

EDIT: Apparently it's "Add article" after some experimenting. Definitely doesn't seem intuitive to me, but maybe it's just me.

Andjhostet,

Here's how I see it.

Upvote: Similar to reddit upvote, I upvote content that I enjoy, or is quality.

Boost: Counts as two upvotes, and reposts the content on your own feed. For content I really enjoy, or I want to save and easily come back to (I'm partially using "boosts" as a saved list, until saved functionality ever comes to kbin.

Who's the most American band?

What does that even mean to you?
:blobcatthink:

Andjhostet,

@SrRochardBunson CCR or Grateful Dead for sure.

OC I haven't seen anyone mention the kbin native(?) app!? I tried it and it seems perfect and amazing?

I tried Jerboa briefly and couldn't get it to work well for me. Then I visited kbin on my phone's browser and was prompted to install the kbin app!? I haven't seen any references to it, but it's exactly what I wanted...? Has anybody else tried it?

Andjhostet,

You mean the chrome based web app thing right? I think it's literally just a separate window that runs the mobile site on chrome. It's pretty functional though, I agree.

Really missing notifications though.

Andjhostet,

Is this community large enough to warrant needing a totally different place? I feel like it'd make sense to have alocasia stuff here until it becomes too much.

Andjhostet, to books

How do you all track your books?

I generally use a Google Spreadsheet, with Title, Author, Date Started, Date Finished, Rating, Review, and Source (such as physical/own, or Libby-Audiobook, etc).

Then I put the info into Goodreads at some point, but honestly I'm considering dropping GR, and either just doing the spreadsheet, or trying a new website.

Andjhostet,

@BigJilm I think I actually have a LibraryThing account too, and it can import from GR right? Might give it a shot. Thanks

Andjhostet,

I just finished Heart of Darkness. Wow, what a dark and wild ride. I also rewatched Apocalypse Now and it's amazing as ever, and much better now that I've read the source material. Side note, but the Theatrical Edition is so much better than redux it's not even funny.

I've also been reading Anne of Green Gables, when I need something a bit brighter. I'm not going to lie though. After Heart of Darkness, it feels a bit unimportant and I'm losing steam with it a bit.

I'm also rereading Watership Down. I might take a break from this to focus on Anne of Green Gables. I love Watership Down, but two kids books at the same time is a bit much.

For my next serious read, I'm probably going to pick up some Hesse. I have Narcissus and Goldmund, or Beneath the Wheel, excited for both.
