Sync is great, and if you give me a reason to keep using it, I will. Will the new Sync have compatibility with Kbin, or is it strictly a Lemmy thing?

Useful indeed. I'll have to make a note of that.

The rise... and fall... and rise... and fall of the Atari 2600

Thanks to the massive success of the NES, the once-popular Atari 2600 was given something few game consoles ever get... a second chance at life. Atari, under the direction of its new CEO Jack Tramiel, resurrected the 2600, offering it as a budget alternative to its own Atari 7800 and the competing NES and Master System....

ArugulaZ, to OldGames4OldGamers

Greetings to all, and welcome to Old Games for Old Gamers, classic video game discussion for those of us who remember the 80s and 90s, and have the gray hairs to prove it! I thought I'd start this as a response to both the recent upheaval at Reddit and the general lack of video game conversation on the retrogaming subreddit. So you just bought an NES at a yard sale for $30? Great find, but what do you think of the system itself? Those are the kinds of discussions I want to start here... reviews, observations, hypotheticals, (polite!) debates. You're encouraged to offer your two cents... and a quarter for the Donkey Kong machine in the back room.

I see this as an opportunity, frankly. I wouldn't have bothered starting a subreddit, but in this growing community, I can start a magazine, talk about what interests me in it, and hopefully find a significant audience for it... one that won't be ripped out from under me by a would be corporate shark with dollar signs in his eyes. That "significant audience" thing sure wasn't happening at Mastodon or Cohost.

The Germans really do have a word for everything, don't they?

OotL: What's the deal with people claiming Lemmy as a whole supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), dictatorships, denies genocides, etc?

I keep running into comments where users are arguing for avoiding Lemmy, claiming that Lemmy supports authoritarian governments, supports the CCP, sides with Russia in their invasion of Ukraine, denies genocides committed by nominal communist governments, and other similar political claims. I know there are communist instances...

Guess I made the right move when I picked kbin. I don't need to find out that the NEXT social network I use is run by political extremist jagoffs.

The paint huffer needs to watch what Elon does and do the exact opposite.

He wants to use this technology to "cure autism," which sounds like it's coming from a position of self-loathing, projected onto everybody else. If he wants to stick chips into his brain, fine, but personally, I don't need a cure for the disease of being me.

"I’m beginning to understand that we’re not on the right side" - Russian soldiers who surrendered say morale on the Russian side is very low (web.archive.org)

One captured Russian soldier says he worries about what will happen if he is returned to Russia in a prisoner swap. “If I have the opportunity, I’ll refuse to be exchanged." Another fighter reported that a doctor declared him unfit for combat after he was wounded in March, but his commander ordered him back to the front.

Certainly explains the push for de-centralized social media.

No users, no Reddit. It's as simple as that. Why the paint huffer thinks he can take content from his users for free, then sell it back to them, is mystifying. No, no, dickhead. You're acting like you're the most important component of Reddit when you are, in fact, the most expendable.

A starting guide to kbin.social + support thread for new users

Frequently seeing users expressing confusion about the workings of kbin.social and the larger fediverse. Thought it was worth making an intro guide to iron out some of the wrinkles in the understanding of how all of this works in hopes of diminishing the barrier to entry the idea of federated content seems to pose. Some of this...

I've got negative reputation, which is unfair as my likes far outweigh my dislikes. I wish this would change.

Why do instances not run ads?

It probably goes against the philosophy or whatever of FOSS or Lemmy itself, but why not be a little evil so that you can actually sustain yourself? Donations can bring us far, but small non-intrusive ads can be a bliss in the skies for the people actually hosting the instance. Especially if there are millions of users uploading...

Weren't ads the ruination of Reddit in the first place? When social media companies get hungry for advertising, it's the users who suffer. Not just from the ads themselves, but from the advertisers' expectations for the content on the site to conform to their standards.

Of course they suspended you! You can't sell beef jerky, diapers, and car insurance with naked Photoshops of John Oliver.

Sure is in the business of TAKING it for free, though!

It's not? Well, Paint Hufferman, I'm right here on Kbin along with thousands of others. Evidently, something has changed.

I'm quite childish. Still play video games, still watch cartoons more than live-action shows, still eat (now sugar-free) candy. What's going to happen? Are the grown-up police going to break into my house and demand that I turn in my adulting license and my pubes?

I've been to Destructoid. They don't hire talented human writers. They barely hire human writers.

What's a game you think has aged surprisingly well?

I was extremely late to the party with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, never having played any of them until 2016 or so. Having long missed the zeitgeist, I figured it would be one of those instances where the games were massive in their time but are simplistic or clunky to play now. But man, was I wrong....

Capcom vs. SNK 2. It's good to the last drop, no matter when and where you play it. Bloody Roar: Primal Fury/Extreme also holds up far better than Sega's Fighting Vipers series.
