I think many of us would stand up to help someone far away if we had some way of actually clearly doing it immediately. Most people do the right thing when given the opportunity and understanding of a situation. It’s hard to convince somebody to suddenly drop access to 90% of the products available to them and to change their entire lifestyle/spend more time and money with the vague promise of “if you and everyone else do it then some day sweat shops will end.”
However, if you went to that same person today and said “if you stop buying Nike products, this person right here will get an education, a decent job, and have a bright future. They will stop working at a sweat shop today,” I bet they’d stop.
It’s just really hard to give people a clear path to helping sometimes. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop participating in unethical industries, but I think it’s important to remember that it’s not purely apathy. It’s just hard to not only connect the dots for people, but give them an option that feels like it actually makes a difference.
It’s a tough challenge and it’s why advocates of any cause of have to work so hard to demonstrate the path of your dollars or time to helping those in need.
Or because they’re probably 15 years younger than you are and are learning just like we all did. God imagine if crypto was a thing when we first got internet connections.
I have seen a few of these with similar story lines and realized we are living it right now. They have the best healthcare, the best food, the best everything and most of us are a few dollars from disaster. That scares some of us to death literally from all the stress it causes.
Rep. Tim Burchett is considering supporting a possible effort to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy if McCarthy makes a deal with Democrats as a way out of this week’s impending government shutdown....
GOP always did promise to show us how useless and unproductive the government could truly be if we’d just let them. The house has been giving a great Iive demo lately.
I have noticed lately that a lot of users on Lemmy spell whining as “whinging” what’s up with that? I could understand if it was misspelled “wining” or somthing but that extra g really confuses me. Is this a misspelling specific for some region or is it lingo of some sort?
But no I remember this as well. It was quoted a ton after and gained a lot of traction. If you look at google trends since you want a “language statistician,” you can see “Sandor Clegane” is still the 4th most associated topic when “whinging” was searched this past week even though that episode aired 5+ years ago.
It’s easy to be snarky on the Internet. Maybe next time you should just do a cursory Google search or ask for clarification with a little more humility/good intent instead of being needlessly rude and challenging.
Sandor Clegane is #4 most related topic when searching “Whinge” on google trends even though that episode aired several years ago. It’s a reasonable assumption. Go look for yourself.
Can we not do that Reddit thing where people just accuse people of bad faith or attribute literally everything they don’t agree with to a fallacy or some such? If you or the other person had literally taken 30 seconds to look at Google trends, you might have even come to the same conclusion yourselves.
This is the kind of act we really don’t need around here. We have enough trolls on other forums. At least try and act with a hint of mutual respect here dude.
I know they allow scam adverts because it’s easy money, but why aren’t they held responsible for facilitating obvious scams? You open Edge, there’s 3 “Earn money quick” adverts. On Instagram, every 5 ads, one is a scam.
I really want to set up my own message board, not necessarily a Lemmy instance - something simpler. Just to start dipping my toes in that world. Is there anything you would recommend as the “easiest” path to hosting my own little forum?
It’s mostly for my own education and a couple of friends if they want to play around on it. It’s not meant to be some big project. I didn’t know WP could handle that I’ll check it out!
Sounds perfect. My ideal situation is I start with the most bare-bones, easiest to do version. Then as I learn what I really want, find other things that allow what I want to do, and slowly teach myself. It’s basically how I’ve learned to do anything lol

I feel like we're all stuck in a movie where all the rich people live on some kind of floating island or satellite with everything they need to live well, and all of us have zero chance of going there
