Desert hiking is no joke. Always bring more water than you think you’ll need. It is 100% sun exposure and you will dehydrate quicker than a forested hike. Took my gf to Palm Springs for some hiking and she was very confident in her hiking strength but had never done a desert hike before. We got over the first crest and she nearly heat stroked out. Needed to use me for shade so she could cool off.

Nothing to joke about.

So where are we all supposed to go now? (www.theverge.com)

Add it all up, and the social web is changing in three crucial ways: It’s going from public to private; it’s shifting from growth and engagement, which broadly involves building good products that people like, to increasing revenue no matter the tradeoff; and it’s turning into an entertainment business. It turns out...

David Pierce.

BA in Government and Media. Writing gig, writing gig, writing gig.

No wonder he doesn’t know where tech is going. No offense, but the best bits of the internet have always been driven by nerds and geeks building stuff. These people complain that Mastodon and the fediverse is too hard or not polished. They just lack the aptitude. They want everything handed to them with little effort.

I cannot wait to dive into this when I get back on my PC. Far Cry isn't a bad game at all, 18 years on. This is gonna be a gold mine to learn FPS development

I'm a fresh, just starting self taught programmer (python, html, javascript). I'm just excited to see how a big org puts together a AAA game! Finding out about all the wild math tricks that went into Doom was eye opening, I can't wait to see what kind of tricks they used in such an open world FPS like far cry. Maybe once I get around to learning c# I can put some of these techniques to use

I'm just looking for design concepts and algos

Oh, I'm just honestly doing all this as side stuff. I have an engineering degree and work professionally in energy. I just have always had little projects I've wanted to do but never learned coding until Covid happened.

Just a little hobby :)

But thank you for the advice!!

How is Godot compared to Unity?

I'm on my language journey, and I've made stuff in Python, and I've also got some work in javascript and html. Eventually I'd like to learn C# as my main, working language so that I can make efficient windows apps and maybe hopefully create a game in Unity.

But if Godot is strong and it takes (practically) python, maybe I'll give that a go.

Thanks for the tips! Is it really that difficult to go straight to C#? I just don't see myself using Java in any of my own projects

Wow! Godot sounds really strong! Here I'm sitting thinking it's just a novelty engine but it sounds like a really good option

How can I help a friend who is falling into "witchcraft"?

I have this friend, N, that has recently started believing things very out of the ordinary. He said that he's been getting into paganism and studying runes and candles. I told him that was very interesting, it sounded like a fun time and a good hobby to have. N let me know that it wasn't just a hobby, but that it had a function...

Be supportive.

I have plenty of friends that believe in auras and zodiac and tarot. I know it's fucking bullshit, but my friends find comfort in it, and so it's not my place to sour their experience. It's something they need.

Science can't explain some really important things, like life after death. So people will search for other answers and that's OK. Just be supportive
