Right? Both the Israeli and Qatari governments suck ass

Or conversely, a Christian apologist coming to an atheist community and saying "if god isn't real why do good things" as if declaring you are a poorly educated sociopath is a good way to challenge people's well formed ideas.

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to explain to some people why "woke leftists" are so quick to shut them up that they feel like they aren't given a right to speak their minds. "Woke" ideas are generally more developed and complex than "common sense" ideas, which requires some thought being put into them while they evolve from basic to their current level, so when you challenge a person's developed idea with a superficial, usually knee jerk level question or critique, you're most likely engaging in a line of thinking they were done with quite early in their evolution of the idea you're trying to challenge.

"Antiwoke" magazin on kbin.social posting bullshit like "how to end Wokeness" and "Time to reject the extrem trans lobby harming our society" How to report ? he is the moderator of that magazin. (calckey.social)

@ernest how do I report a Magazin on kbin.social ? There is a usere called "ps" who is posting to his own "antiwoke" Magazin on kbin.social. Please remove this and dont give them a chance to etablish them self on kbin.social. When I report his stuff it will go to him because he is the moderator of the magazin? Seems like a...

That's not nuance, that's just ignorance and a knee-jerk reaction to a very complicated issue which has to be left to experts, who, in addition to being normal people with compassion and love like most of us towards their fellow humans, know the most about their topic of expertise than any of us.

I agree with everything you said, and I want to add;

As long as lab grown meat is approved for consumption, the methods of producing it can be made more and more environmentally friendly. It's a matter of regulation+development.

CynAq,

We want to discuss topics. This is a place to do that.

Simple need, simple solution.

You don't need an extra incentive to make people talk about things if people talking about things is the thing you want. You don't want to incentivize people who don't want to talk about things to be active somewhere you want people to talk about things because then those people will start doing the thing your'e incentivizing them for instead of talk about things.

I personally only want people who want to talk about things here, and don't want people who don't want to talk about things.

You can see here that most of the new accounts are on spam instances created for the sole purpose of making spam bots.

I hope we can do that while keeping gatekeeping to a minimum.

Has J. K. Rowling ever said or posted anything explicitly hateful?

Every time she comes up it's always underlined that she is super transphobic. However, it's never been really clear to me what things she has said to acquire such a status. Whenever this is asked there is usually someone linking some two hour YouTube theory about goblin or a massive article that always feels quite tangential. If...

So, are you married to futurama, and it's your son's favorite show, or are you married to your son, and futurama is their favorite show?

Because @ernest is a legend. Let's leave it at that ;)

(Of course not leave it at that. Discussion is good)

I don't know about smaller lemmy communities but the lemmy world logo looks like Allah written backwards in arabic and throws me off every time I see it, lol

Don't be discouraged by people saying these protests don't work, or by subreddits going public

People discredit every type of protest, IRL or not. I think back to every major protest that's happened in response to some major event, and the response every time is "That won't ever work", "You're wasting your time", "Imagine caring about that"....

This is exactly how I feel too.

It gives me confidence that the more we build a community in this "ecosystem", as much as I hate that word in this context, the more people will be drawn to it.

CynAq,

I don't think I've seen it on kbin, but I sort of encountered it in a community hosted on beehaw, iirc.

There was a thread in the lgbt+ community where the OP was asking why the average person hated lgbtq+ folks and one dude clearly explained why he hated them.

His explanation was basically "as a muslim", so as someone with the muslim identity, he was alright with "gays" first because he didn't care what other people did in their bedrooms, but "it didn't stay there" and the gays with their ideology started to show up everywhere and started cramming their ideology to everyone else.

So yeah, the guy thought islam was an identity but being lgbtq+ was an ideology.

God, I hate discord with a passion. Not as a chat platform, which it's actually pretty decent at but as a community managing tool.

Fingers crossed, this place will take off and we'll have all the inside jokes we need!

Also, check the side bar. The site is getting crazy traffic in its prototype stage. With this much demand, I'm hopeful (knocks on wood).

Boost is a repost or retweet on mastodon, and in the microblog sections of kbin.

On thread comments, a boost pushes the top level comments to the top of the stack. It means "this is the shit, everyone's gotta read this first."

On the threads view, a boost pushes a thread up the list but not all the way to the top, so it's practically an upvote.

In all cases, if you have followers, it pushes the threads and microblog posts you boosted into their feed.

OC How did you end up finding kbin? Did you migrate here from Reddit?

I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms. I have since found a great instance over on cupoftea.social that promotes quality...

Take a look at the sidebar. You'll see it says under the magazine (think subreddit) logo and chat: /@chat/

@chat is the name of the subreddit, kbin.social is the name of the site. Another popular site, or instance in the language of the "fediverse", is lemmy. lemmy.ml is their main instance. You'll notice some threads you'll see on kbin here (what you are signed in on) will have something like /@sometopic/

That is a thread created on lemmy.ml. A completely separate site from kbin.social but they push content to each other. Similarly, someone on lemmy.ml can see this very thread and comment on it without leaving lemmy. Their sidebar will say !chat because lemmy uses the !something instead of /@something/ but that's a technicality.

And this is why we shouldn't keep saying "it doesn't matter which instance you sign up on" to newcomers.

I think the best approach would be to make a list of the most vibrant and general purpose instances, at least a few of them, and direct people to those. Once they figure it out, they'll find their best fit anyway. If their initial experience is in a particularly slow or very niche instance, they might abandon the platform altogether due to the wrong impression they get.

That's exactly what happened to me with mastodon because the first instance I signed up for was too niche and too small. It just felt dead. It was the same three or four people posting disjointed stuff and never interacting with each other by the looks of things. I figured it out in time but that was a bad first impression nonetheless.

CynAq,
CynAq avatar

Exactly, and this is fundamentally a User Experience question which should be answered with directives rather than explanations of how the protocol works.

At least on kbin, you can go to your notification settings and turn on comment and post reply notifications which are turned off by default for some reason.
