This understanding is much more easily achieved after one's familiar with the basics of their own instance though, isn't it? Rather than expecting them to imagine the exact user experience of the fediverse before they even made their account, would we not be better off introducing them to a cold open and be helpful later when they have questions?

All of these problems are caused by the same underlying system and trying to explain the system to non-users is the exact wrong way to go about alleviating them. Better interface and UX design is the only thing which can solve this issue.

The answer can be many things if you go into detail but the summary is change is hard.

CynAq,
CynAq avatar

We should start by designing better and more informative UX, and ditch the email analogies altogether.

Nobody imagines the correct thing when we harp on about how decentralized and amazing everything is, analogous to email but also reddit and twitter combined but also different but it doesn't matter because it's all the same in the end.

I'm interested to see how they spin the gun thing.

I'm thinking something like "they only want guns for themselves and want to take ours away!"

This feels like a forced reddit detox.

I, much like basically everyone here, have been avoiding Reddit when possible, and the content here just doesn't hit the same. My fried dopamine receptors were certainly screaming for stimulation early on but now I feel an urge to touch grass and breathe fresh air. What is this? Am I dying? I still hate the angry lightbulb in...

I got over leaving reddit for good but I'm a bit worried about the hellhole it's seemingly becoming with all the exposure it's able to give horrible ideas. I won't be surprised if it goes full fascist next week Twatter style.

You got +2 as of the timing of this comment, yay!

CynAq,

Look at how many downvotes this thread received. It's mind boggling how large a portion of us, even in these seemingly progressive environments like kbin, are transphobic.

CynAq,

The site is very new and is in active development. For now, it's mostly under the hood stuff but the stability of the experience increased quite a bit since I first started a week so they must be doing it right.

I believe the owner @ernest is doing the heavy lifting by himself.

Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering

While rescuers fear for crew, Logitech F710 PC gamepad sells out within minutes.

@panda

@arstechnica

I'm quite sure none of them cost $30 tho, which is the point made in the title, and nothing about the controls being digital.

I'm afraid this is some sort of an Autistic Reporter Michael Falk situation.

Is this some sort of Tucker Carlsen impersonation attempt? I see questions flowing and leading to each other without necessarily disclosing any leaning as to the stance of the commenter.

I have no idea what your stance is on any of the issues at hand, and that makes it impossible to give a meaningful response. If I engaged with each question separately and answered them, the resulting comment would still look like a bunch of half-questions because they aren't questions with a solid structure even, as they are "maybe" questions. The answer to those is almost always "maybe" too.

CynAq,
CynAq avatar

Agreed.

With the submarine story, it's like a film scenario. Every detail is something unusual, and not tragic in itself. Well, depends on who you ask. There are many people who think billionaires existing is a very real tragedy, and rightly so, but I digress.

With billionaires in a comic-book-supervillain submarine lost on their way to see the Titanic wreck, you can laugh at the $30 controller, or wonder where their brains were, or if anybody looked at their financials because this also would work as a movie scenario where 4 billionaires pay someone to disappear them because they didn't pay taxes or something.

Refugee boat sinking is actual tragedy, with the added bonus of the entire western world having some level of guilt in creating. When the average, empathy having person hears about it, they feel complex emotions from sadness to guilty conscience for casually hearing about it from the comfort of their couch... It's difficult to deal with.

Has J. K. Rowling ever said or posted anything explicitly hateful?

Every time she comes up it's always underlined that she is super transphobic. However, it's never been really clear to me what things she has said to acquire such a status. Whenever this is asked there is usually someone linking some two hour YouTube theory about goblin or a massive article that always feels quite tangential. If...

Yes but on reddit, upvotes puts something in your upvoted list and you can save selectively, which is a much better system for organization.

Boosts and upvotes have a slightly different functionality here that I do upvote and/or boost posts and comments differently, none of which is to add the post to my favorites. Even though it can be used that way for the same effect, it's a different use case.

What if I want to save a post I didn't want to boost or favorite? Should I not be able to save a comment I disagree with that I also downvoted?

CynAq,

Don't you know? You gotta suffer for your work to matter. Everybody could work hard if working was enjoyable and well compensated.
If everyone works hard, and willingly so, how will we differentiate who's better?

CynAq,

I don't have any interest in the content but I will boost and comment for a few days to see if it helps.
You can also boost and like yourself to give it some initial juice. Don't be shy as you're trying to build something from scratch.
I can also recommend hitting some similar but more active communities on other instances and cross post some stuff with the links to your magazines. Some people might show interest.

Estonia becomes the first ex-Soviet country to legalize gay marriages (www.themayor.eu)

The Riigikogu, Estonia’s Parliament, passed a new law which legalizes marriage for same-sex couples, thus becoming the first post-Soviet country to do so. That this happened in the month of June, which is generally when most Pride parades take place around the world, is also highly symbolic and poignant.

Great news!

I'm really happy there are some pro lgbtq news between all the attacks the community suffers constantly.

The "without commercial interest" seems to push it into commercial territory. These, including the original, look like corporate filler posters to me.

“The Court’s self-delegitimization [has escalated] into what looks more like a death spiral, an institutional collapse … The majority is so ethically challenged, internally divided, jurisprudentially sloppy, and ideologically polarized that it cannot do a competent job despite what by historical standards is a ridiculously light workload. ”

This, by Garrett Epps, is the most important thing you’ll read this year about our out-of-control Supreme Court.

@JamesGleick This may be the most intellectually honest, linguistically efficient, artistically pleasing, and holistically scathing diss of a governmental entity I have ever read which despite talking about something brutally dangerous, is hysterically comical.

I understand this to be a sort of sovereign citizen movement.

I'm sure this time it'll work.
