We all know Twitter is being rebranded as X, so we presumably should no longer be calling Tweets “Tweets”, so what are they called now? The best answer gets 10 karma and a verified checkmark*
She literally called me at the time of the appointment to tell me she can't see me. She was so apologetic, but was like "I absolutely can treat you, but I'm not allowed by your insurance". Fuck this country....
The extreme profit oriented business culture of the US combined with the human nature of bandwagons make these sort of disgusting practices possible.
Corporations are justified, by default, in anything they can do to increase profit, and will do so until there's enough public backlash to negate the amount of profit that practice makes.
The public backlash is tied to the social momentum the idea has. Because profitability is the default idea to be promoted, you can't say something like "don't do this obviously profitable thing because it's bad for people" unless there's enough people around you who'll get on the bandwagon. If suddenly some influential person or a critical number of schmucks say the opposite, then everyone is defending the corporation's, not only the right, but the duty to be profitable.
It's an unpleasant way to live, really, but people are creatures of habit and won't easily go against the culture they grow up in.
The problem is with defining what "elective" is. Defining in legal terms, a "necessary abortion" is also equally difficult.
The best way to safeguard medical professionals against career, even freedom threatening legal battles, is to leave the discretion to medical boards who know ultimately better than anyone what they are dealing with.
This is why it's dangerous to meddle in something like this. We can't go on legislating depending on our personal morals and understanding of ethics. We can't legislate from a position which assumes medical professionals are profit driven, soulless devils who'd do wrong unless prevented from doing so by the strong hand of the general society through government intervention.
This same principle is valid in both gender affirming care -yes, for minors too- and for access to abortions.
The problem here isn't talking to Meta or Meta making a federated platform.
Nobody can prevent Meta from doing that anyway.
The problem is the need to push against the insistence of Meta to keep these meetings off the record. It's against the entire philosophy of something like not only fediverse but FOSS in general.
If Meta wants good faith, they have to show it first.
Notice that in the email, Kev gives his guidance as to the matter. Do whatever the fuck you want as long as you put people first and make a product for the purpose of serving them.
This should be the attitude everyone should have first.
We will accept you as long as you're bringing value to us, not the other way round, got that Meta?
As long as any dev is taking this approach, Meta included, I'm supporting them. If someone is secretive about their intentions about a public service which is not a for profit endeavor inherently, I'll have a hard pass too.
The people running most large things, like reddit or countries, are idiots because people with half a brain are smart enough to see that that's not a position you want to put yourself in. Anyone who can see the enormity of the responsibility nope out a lot sooner than reaching that level of governance, and the idiots who can't see filter through.
With the submarine story, it's like a film scenario. Every detail is something unusual, and not tragic in itself. Well, depends on who you ask. There are many people who think billionaires existing is a very real tragedy, and rightly so, but I digress.
With billionaires in a comic-book-supervillain submarine lost on their way to see the Titanic wreck, you can laugh at the $30 controller, or wonder where their brains were, or if anybody looked at their financials because this also would work as a movie scenario where 4 billionaires pay someone to disappear them because they didn't pay taxes or something.
Refugee boat sinking is actual tragedy, with the added bonus of the entire western world having some level of guilt in creating. When the average, empathy having person hears about it, they feel complex emotions from sadness to guilty conscience for casually hearing about it from the comfort of their couch... It's difficult to deal with.
Don't you know? You gotta suffer for your work to matter. Everybody could work hard if working was enjoyable and well compensated.
If everyone works hard, and willingly so, how will we differentiate who's better?
Yes but that's only relevant if you're aware of a specific community on a specific instance and expect to be interacting with it on purpose.
It's completely irrelevant if someone just gives you the name of an instance, tells you to make an account on it and start using. You'll be perfectly fine reading and commenting whatever's in your feed.
The only way this breaks is if you're in an instance that is too small to have local traffic while having technical difficulties with federation. If the instance is active enough or it's federating normally, someone completely unaware of the concept of federation will be perfectly fine as long as they understand the interface.
I keep running into comments where users are arguing for avoiding Lemmy, claiming that Lemmy supports authoritarian governments, supports the CCP, sides with Russia in their invasion of Ukraine, denies genocides committed by nominal communist governments, and other similar political claims. I know there are communist instances...
One captured Russian soldier says he worries about what will happen if he is returned to Russia in a prisoner swap. “If I have the opportunity, I’ll refuse to be exchanged." I legit started studying social psychology to understand this and similar phenomena. It's going slow but I hope to have a working understanding in a few years.
They will drown us out even if they don't want in that case. Them just using the service normally will flood all our feeds with posts from their service based on the sheer number of them.
I have a confession to make, and I think it's hilarious.

I literally don't understand what is there to learn that everyone isn't already used to in one form or another.
Kbin, lemmy, pixelfed, mastodon, beehaw are all pretty intuitive to start using right away. The account creation process is no different than what is available on mainstream sites.
The federation system sounds a bit intimidating but in reality, it takes about one hour of using your selected service to get used to.
As long as we direct people to instances with a stable stream of content from a large enough number of regular users, they should be absolutely fine.
Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. Seems I jumped the gun on this and the restores haven't been intentional - at least not in this particular case....
I'm inclined to think that the primary reason is how sexually repressed the average person is.
I'm thinking of it this way:
The average person hides their kinks, and normalizes the utter segregation of sexuality from life in general in rhetoric. Obviously life isn't separate from sexuality, therefore any display of mainstream sexuality from which there's no hiding, is deemed non-sexual. Hyper-sexualized tv shows, sexualization of young people, cishet couples walking hand in hand or even kissing publicly are ignored to a large degree. Of course there are puritans out there but we're talking about the average person here.
When all this contradicting behavior pushes the cognitive dissonance to unbearable degrees, the average person looks for a target to lash out, to blame for the stress their own sexual repression creates within them.
As a result, the sexually repressed average person can't see, hear or think about any aspect of the lgbtq+ community without their own sexual urges boiling over like an overfilled pot of soup. They think the difference between themselves and the openly out members of the lgbtq+ community is that the average person knows how to keep their kinks, fetishes and sexuality to themselves, while the lgbtq+ community makes a culture out of showing off theirs.
They literally can't understand being lgbtq+ isn't a kink or a fetish, nor is it solely based on sexual expression, because their own sexual expression is normalized into everyday culture for everyone to see 24/7, thus a gay couple walking their kid to school in the morning is no different to them than themselves getting a footjob on the sidewalk next to the school.
As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. I will try to cut off the traffic as soon as possible and return to normal operation. Thank you for all your support and patience! :)
If a substantial number of old users and power users leave reddit, it might trigger a noticeable slowdown in traffic and a decline in quality (I'm not so sure about this as the quality had been going down the shitter for a long time anyway). Maybe that will alert people as to what's happening.
I deleted all the content and comments I posted from my 12 year old account after the AMA spez did yesterday. I will delete the account at the end of this month if nothing changes (I doubt anything will).
