New Lemmy version dropped, some instances upgraded, some didn't, the differences bork federation in new and mildly interesting ways.

GeekFTW avatar

Things you (depending on lemmy or kbin) upvote, downvote, boost, comment, post, users you follow, and users who follow you can be seen by others (or at least on Kbin we can see them, not sure if the UI on lemmy does the same). Communities you sub to are just seen by yourself however.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Sorry ignore the upvotes and downvotes part, misspoke regarding those two.

As for what kbin is: Lemmy, but different software. Still uses the same protocol and functions basically the same as lemmy but coded from scratch instead of just using the same software the rest of lemmy does. http://kbin.social, for example)

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Ok did some more digging cause I saw some mixed info and I wanted to be sure lol.

So final answer: Yes on Kbin we can see those things. Any post we click on (for example I'm using this one on lemmy.world https://lemmy.world/post/256166, viewed through kbin.social). On every post (regardless of what instance it's on) we have an Activity button which when you click on will show you the Boosts (a kbin thing equal to a Twitter retweet), favourites (upvotes), reduces (downvotes, if you're somewhere that supports them), and all info is public (here is a screenshot which I censored, however I assure you I am regular bumble-fuck-user-™. https://imgur.com/a/Jz4iP3Q)

So yes everything is public. I can't find a way to find it on a person's account, but on specific threads you can see it. A person may have to dig a bit for it, but it is public indeed. Whether anyone on Lemmy can see the same thing, or ever will, I have no idea, but we can on Kbin and it does count across the Fediverse it appears.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

No idea as to question 1, but as for question 2: https://rentry.co/megathread This is the direct url to the megathread and it is also linked in this communities sidebar should you lose it.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

I saw someone in another thread say that the NSFW change wasn't due to go through until the 5th so they could be waiting to do it all together.

Reddit also may have gotten their bluff called with all the bad press, the devaluation. etc.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

On Lemmy I am unsure, I know I have not found any way to do so on Kbin aside from just turning notifications off in general in the Settings so I would assume it's probably gonna be a similar "No unless if you can disable them all" type of thing.

Definitely a feature I wanna see lol

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Go to kbin.social/d/feddit.de and you can block the domain (or any other, just sub the domain into that url) just like you would a person, or a magazine

Only works so far on kbin, so if you also have an account elsewhere on lemmy you're SOL&JWF.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Just be advised, I've been abusing the hell out of blocking domains for the last day or so and I have noticed some of those blocked domains do seem to sneak through still. 100% made a big difference, but life still finds a way lol.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

On kbin yes, on lemmy I don't think so.

I remember a day when I could wake up and look forward to playing Overwatch.

I struggle to remember which year that last was.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Ditto. My wife and I were playing since about 6-10mo after launch. We loved the game.

Tried the OW2 beta for a day or two, didn't like it. Uninstalled OW the day OW2 launched and that was that. Back to every-other-game-I've-missed-out-on-over-the-last-40-years-that-I-can-occupy-my-time-with-instead!

So I'm on Kbin.social right now. Let's say I wanna view our gaming community. like how Reddit has:

Reddit.com/r/Subredditname

I would go to:

kbin.social/m/magazinename

You on lemmy.world would go to:

lemmy.world/c/communityname

Super simple so far I hope lol. Same url format, just a C instead of an R on lemmy, and M instead of an R on kbin.

Let's say I on kbin wanna see your gaming community. If I did kbin.social/m/gaming, I would get mine. The url though can act like how an email address does, by adding a domain to the end of it. So if I did kbin.social/m/gaming@lemmy.world, I'll see your gaming community. Same if you do lemmy.world/c/gaming you see yours, but lemmy.world/c/gaming@kbin.social you should see ours.

If I got those URL's right that is lol

Both kbin and lemmy instances do also have other ways to get to other instances to sub, but the instructions I provided are based just on the url so it should work for anyone while ya get used to the UI and new platform and whatnot.

Can someone confirm if they fixed the scent?

Back early 2022 they had changed the formula or whatever chemicals they use to scent the soap bars. The few times I've bought it since then the smell irritates my wife too much (since she's quite sensitive to certain ones), so I stopped buying it entirely.

Do you use RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it is a simple, standardized content distribution method that can help you stay up-to-date with your favorite newscasts, blogs, websites, and social media channels. Instead of visiting sites to find new posts or subscribing to sites to receive notification of new posts, find the RSS...

Not the person you're replying to, but also a Feedly user:

Feedly does have a few paid tiers, but I've been using it for literally 10 years as of 2 days ago and I have not seen a need to pay a single penny in that time.

Feeds themselves cost nothing nor would I pay for any that came with a cost as almost any website from the last 20 years has one already set up that you can add to any reader.

spacedragon, to DoctorWho

Could anyone send me a picture of the Tardis? I will be very thankful. I want to put it as a wallpaper. But I am kind of so I will be grateful if anyone has a nice one. Thank you.

GeekFTW,

@spacedragon Not sure if you are looking for landscape or portrait for orientation, but here's one I'm fond of (with descriptive text, assuming it works lol)

Are there any iOS apps available or in the works that work with kbin?

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

@unabatedshagie Kbin doesn't have an API set up yet, so there won't be anyone doing much until they get that done.

That being said given everything connects with ActivityPub, once Kbin gets said API working I cannot imagine it would take more than the addition of said API to any of the existing/soon to exist Lemmy apps to allow them to work with Kbin.

So hopefully soon!

Edit: I know https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp is one of the apps which'll be on iOS. Lemmy, but as close as it gets for now.

Did you ever have a classmate that pretended to be a vampire or some other supernatural creature? How much did they commit to it?

I had a couple classmates that pretended to be vampires back in elementary and middle school. They’d pretend their Koolaid was blood, complain about the sunlight, and bite their friends a lot. Not enough to draw blood, though. I haven’t kept up with most of them, but one guy is a teacher now. He seems pretty normal.

I had a kid in one of my classes in middle school who was trying to convince people The Undertaker (as in Mark Calaway, professional wrestler for WWF/WWE) was his uncle and that his powers were real and he had totally seen them and he was training him to do the whole lightning thing. Mmhmm yes'siree.

Pretty sure this kid ate paint too from the look of him.

GeekFTW,
GeekFTW avatar

Same. I've been on Reddit for almost 12 years and for so long now, every time I post or comment I go through a several-minute-long phase of "Ugh no one needs to hear from my stupid arse on this topic" and "Jesus Christ what a stupid ass comment..." Twitter I've been on years also but I barely use because it was going down the shitter long before Space Karen got his hands on it.

Been here in the Fediverse on Mastodon and Kbin for a few weeks now and it's like going from gas station sushi that may be fresh that day to a high end sushi shop with a great omakase. Reddit still has some subs that, in my own realm of interests, haven't picked up yet here in the Fediverse, but even just over the last 3 weeks the changes and increase in content has been very noticeable.

Same goes with vanilla. Oh 1 teaspoon? Cool tablespoon it is lfg!

I like every month or two buying a pound of onions, run em over the mandolin and spend an afternoon doing a nice slow caramelize on em. Reduce em down to a cup or so of dark brown amazingness, toss it in the fridge and add into a bunch of food just like I do roasted garlic.
