Quick counter: lower kelvin lights are terrible for color reproduction. Pure sunlight is around 5000K, and has a CRI (color rendering index) of 100. Switching to warmer (lower kelvin) lights is going to also alter your CRI, and will change the way that you perceive colors. If you need high color discrimination, that's going to be bad.

For outdoor lights, in most cases that's not a problem.

Usually. In most cases, you aren't going to notice just how much the colors have shifted, because your brain automatically adjusts. Youre perception of color is usually how colors appear relative to other things; you will see a red as red because your brain is comparing it to other objects with a known color. OTOH, if you're taking photos under poor lighting conditions, you'll see a significant shift in color. If you've ever taken film photos under fluorescent lights, you'd see that everything looked sharply green, when you don't perceive them as being green at that moment. (Digital cameras often make color adjustments, and the sensors are often not as sensitive as film can be.)

Going to an extreme, if you use a red filter on a light source, all colors are going to end up looking brown and grey; switching to red lights does the best at minimizing light pollution and loss of night vision, but at the cost of most color information. That's not bad, just a thing to consider.

HelixDab,

...And how exactly do you think people are going to be able to eat meat otherwise? Or have dairy, eggs, wool, etc.? Do you think that people should e.g., raise chickens in the city?

And that's ignoring the small obligate carnivores that make up most of the pets in the world.

Hey, I'd rather hunt my own food too, but we no longer live in tribal or feudal societies where you can reasonably expect to engage in animal husbandry yourself.

HelixDab,

Huh. A MAGAt rioter that wanted to undermine due process and civil rights also wants to be a cop.

Whoda thunk?

HelixDab,

Kimberly Edds, spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, told NPR the decision was made "as a result of having insufficient evidence" to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

...Which is pretty much par for the course for a lot of sexual assault cases as well. RAINN reports that, out of every 1000 sexual assaults, 310 get reported to police, 50 result in arrests, and only 28 result in convictions. So the DA dropping the case before even going to trial isn't all that surprising. It doesn't mean that he isn't guilty, just that the DA didn't think they were going to be able to prove it in court.

HelixDab,

Obviously the problem is that there are too many knives in China, and it's too easy for civilians to get knives! No one needs a knife; the only purpose of a knife is to cut and stab. The only solution is to completely ban all knives in China.

...Or they could seriously address the social issues that lead to certain segments of their population committing this kind of atrocity.

Hmmm. I wonder where else that could be applied...?

HelixDab,

...Why should we be concerned about Putin saving face? This is his fuck up, and he was given ample opportunities to put the brakes on before he ever invaded.

HelixDab,

...And thus we see why line item vetoes are not a great idea. Yeah, it worked great here, but it has the potential to undercut every single bill passed by a legislature. It puts way too much power into the hands of the executive branch, because it essentially gives them the power to write laws.

How can I help a friend who is falling into "witchcraft"?

I have this friend, N, that has recently started believing things very out of the ordinary. He said that he's been getting into paganism and studying runes and candles. I told him that was very interesting, it sounded like a fun time and a good hobby to have. N let me know that it wasn't just a hobby, but that it had a function...

HelixDab,

I'm going to push back on this a bit.

No, you can't disprove the existence of deity, because you can't technically disprove anything. On the other hand, there's no evidence that points to a divine that couldn't be more easily explained by some other mechanism. This gets into Occam's Razor territory; the lack of deity is more likely than the existence of deity, simply because it's an answer that requires the least unsupported, new evidence to arrive at.

OTOH, I think that people have evolved in such a way that beliefs like this are easy to fall into, and are comforting in a deeply instinctual way, even if they aren't factually correct. We are biological organisms, and our biological nature makes it impossible for us to perceive the universe as it 'really' is, but only through the lens of our own existence. We're biologically programmed, through hundreds of thousands of years of evolution, to see things and patterns that aren't there, since missing patterns that are there is more likely to get us killed. Thus, religion.

banning and defederating communities

Hey all, I recently left reddit like many of you. I have a question regarding lemmy and the fediverse on the history of banning and defederation. I have noticed several posts calling for varying communities to be disconnected. were these removal requests as prevalent before the mass migration? Usually I am all for communities...

HelixDab,

Most instances also defederated from lemmygrad (commies) so its not generally politically left either.

IMO, Stalinists aren't exactly tolerant either. You're still talking about a totalitarian and authoritarian viewpoint, even if they're on the left on economic matters.

IMO, if your point is to make a community welcoming, then you have to get rid of intolerant voices. That--broadly speaking--means that you have to remove people advocating for any kind of absolutist, authoritarian rules. It's easy to see at a macro level, but it's all fuzzy at a micro level.

HelixDab,

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, in a dissent to the ruling joined by fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, wrote that the decision "unjustifiably grants true threats preferential treatment."

...What the fuck? Am I taking crazy pills? In what fucking world do Thomas and Barrett advocate for a sane and rational approach to anything?

"Antiwoke" magazin on kbin.social posting bullshit like "how to end Wokeness" and "Time to reject the extrem trans lobby harming our society" How to report ? he is the moderator of that magazin. (calckey.social)

HelixDab,

"Disagreements" are for things like tax milage, or whether or not a school needs a new football field. "Disagreements" are not for things like, "jews should be gassed", or "trans people are all pedophiles".

HelixDab,

Depending on how you generate power, you could use LED grow lights in vertical farms. You also have the luxury of working in an environment that you can tightly control; that means you may not need to use pesticides or herbicide at all. If you aren't working in large fields, you can get away from using heavy diesel farm equipment.

Fundamentally, we need to use less land for farming, we need to use far fewer pesticides and herbicides, and need to reduce the emissions associated with farming. Vertical farming has the potential to help with all of those.

HelixDab,

...But that's not what Christian nationalists are working towards. They want to teach their religion, not teach about all religion.

HelixDab,

You mean misANDRY, right? Because white cis het Christian men are truly the most oppressed minority in the history of the world.

Right?

HelixDab,

Fun fact: you can be opposed to capitalism without being a communist.

You [tankies] maybe opposed to capitalism, but you're still in favor of the coercive control of individuals by a state-level entity. That's just another flavor of authoritarianism.

HelixDab,

I think we're already seeing that a lot of the groups are going to be left-leaning, and since the system is decentralized by design, it's not going to be attractive to people that are right-wing and have authoritarian views. E.g., they won't be able to force other people to see what they say. (Remember the shitstorm of whining when TheDonald was removed from the front page so that 99% of people didn't see it anymore?)

HelixDab,

I can't go back; they banned my account, after 12 years, and a few hundred thousand karma. I like to think that, in some small way, I helped make reddit a better place than it had been. And now I couldn't contribute, even if I wanted to.

But really, why would I want to? The point of contributing to a community is to make it better for everyone. Huffman/spez has made it clear that these contributions are not valued, even though they're the currency that allows them to make money by selling advertisements.

HelixDab,

THIS is what's going to bite him in the ass.

This is a huge case. It's going to take hundreds, if not thousands of billable hours. Any attorney that's competent that takes this case has to know that they're probably not going to see even a fraction of that money, meaning that they'll be without income for a long period of time. A competent attorney that's not ideologically motivated and independently wealthy is unlikely to be able to take the case. (An _in_competent attorney that doesn't realize this fact might take the case, and then not be allowed to withdraw from the case by the judge.)

Second, Trump has a history of running his mouth in public. The attorneys that are going to be defending him need to have national security clearances in order to be effective counsel. If Trump talks about the cases in public, he could cost his attorneys their security clearances, which would not only impede their ability to defend him, but could also prevent them from being able to defend similar clients in the future. If I was an attorney, that would be a really big fucking deal. Not only would I be unlikely to be get paid, but there would be a real risk that Trump could harm my ability to earn income in the future.

If I was a competent attorney with a track record of defending this kind of case, this case would be radioactive.

HelixDab,

How about starting by letting users vote on whether or not Huffman should be removed?

HelixDab,

It's not that simple. The fabric most commonly made from bamboo is rayon, and rayon can be made from any cellulose fiber. Most rayon processes are actually pretty awful; they produce a lot of waste that's not great for the environment. Rayon--regardless of the source of the cellulose--is weaker than cotton, and tends to tear very easily when wet. You can process bamboo in a way that is much more environmentally responsible, but then you get a fiber that's more like linen rather than cotton. But very little bamboo fabric is made that way.

Overall, hemp is probably the most environmentally friendly fiber out there. It's not perfect, but it requires less pesticides, can be used as part of crop rotation (for the few farmers that do rotate crops), and needs less water to grow. It also grows in more climate zones. The fibers are harder to work with, and water is usually required to process them to a useful state, but you get very long staple fibers that are quite strong.

HelixDab, to LiberalGunOwners

Quick note: if any mods for the Reddit sub end up here, shoot me a message, we'll see if we can figure out some way to verify your identity, and you're welcome to help moderate this magazine if it manages to take off.

About me, the current moderator of this brand spankin' new magazine: I was raised in a conservative, evangelical Christian sect, deconverted in my 20s, and now identify as an unaffiliated atheistic Satanist. A love of firearms was just about the only thing I retained from my prior life. I am solidly middle aged. I live in a deep red part of the rural south, in the foothills of the Appalachians, but I have lived in Chicago, San Diego, central Ohio, Michigan, and even eastern Idaho.

Politically, I am somewhere between anarchist and libertarian socialist. Having been involved to a degree in more anarchistic groups, I recognize that some kind of authoritarianism is really useful for getting anything done, but I still deeply mistrust authority in general. I oppose most gun laws that currently exist in the US on principle, while recognizing that they have a certain utility.

I am probably in the upper 5% of gun owners in terms of the number of firearms that I own, but since most gun owners have only one firearm, that's not saying a lot. I have a few antique rifles, a couple of very modern rifles, and a handful of pistols. I do not currently have a shotgun or any NFA items, although I have enjoyed skeet shooting in the past (first merit badge I got at summer camp!), and would like to get silencers in the future. I have not competed yet; that's on my list for this year. I am currently working on the physical conditioning so that I can do brutality matches and not get completely gassed. I reload when I can get primers.

I intend to work up to competing in class B in USPSA. Once I'm at that minimum level of competency, I plan on getting certified through the NRA as an instructor so that I can train--for free--marginalized people that want or need training. By "marginalized people", I mean specifically LGBTQ+ and sex workers, but also non-white people and women. (White men can get training anywhere and not have to worry about sexism or racism; I'm not concerned about people that look like me not having comfortable training opportunities.)

Personally, I'm most interested in 2-gun action matches and brutality matches. USPSA/IPSC/IDPA/SteelChallenge/etc. are ways to build my skills up to doing well in 2-gun. I'd love to do Cowboy Action Shooting because dressing up in costumes--and trying to be fully historically accurate!--and shooting appeals to me, but I just don't have the money lying around to get the firearms that I'd need.

I do not hunt yet. I do not have a problem with hunting for food, but I personally think that it's immoral to hunt for sport. I'm most interested in hunting feral pigs, which are a serious, significant problem in my state. Because there was no hunting tradition in my family, I never learned. I've taken the hunter safety course, but given the weird-ass restrictions and lack of public land in my state, I have not gotten a license yet. I am also not entirely sure where to start, since I have no experience tracking, etc.
