WtfEvenIsExistence,

I was the second child in my family born during the one child policy. They tried to force an abortion on my mother. She was from a village and fled to a city and hide. Once I was born, they couldn’t justify killing a child that has already been born, so they let me live, but my parents have to pay tens of thousands of RMB (¥) and that took several years to pay off. And if you don’t pay that, they deny issuing a birth certificate, essentally you don’t legally exist if your parents couldn’t pay the fine. But they eventually did and got all the documents.

We left China when I was still in elementary school. My mother told me about this when I was a kid and I didn’t really understand what she meant. Then when I was around highschool age, I kinda had an existential crisis. I almost never had a chance to exist because of some crazy government policy.

Most people hate the CCP because of authoritarianism, but for me, it not just the authoritarianism, I have a personal grudge against the CCP.

YSK: you can setup pihole on any old rooted android (5.0+) device (lemmy.nz)

I just discovered this and it works fantastically on any old / unused android device you might have lying around, I was shocked at how easy it was, all the instructions are there, once you have it running all you need to do is set your router DNS settings to your pihole IP address and presto! Ads and trackers are gone!...

ours,

Personally, I don’t care how good it is, I refuse to use a Chromium-based browser and insist on supporting its only serious competitor: Firefox.

  • kazakhspy,

I feel like people misunderstood what anon was trying to say. He doesnt mean work 7 days a week. He says pile up work, and then work weekends. So do minimum amount of work or no work on monday to friday, and then finish work on weekends. That makes it look like you are a dedicated worker who works on every weekend, when in actuality you are working less overall. I think thats the exploit anon was talking about.

    rickastley,

Shame that they removed port forwarding, I’ll definitely stick with them if it’s not the case.

High school boys are trending conservative (thehill.com)

While many believe young people are becoming more liberal, data shows that 12th grade boys are nearly twice as likely to identify as conservative compared to liberal. Around 25% of high school seniors identify as conservative while only 13% identify as liberal. In contrast, the share of 12th grade girls identifying as liberal...

I keep feeling that there's a disaster being brewed there, the only people paying attention to young boys seems to be the alt right, and there's a need for this which everybody seems to dismiss, every single one of the old style support structures for masculinity have been dismantled over decades, and while they were right to be dismantled all these boys still need the support to actually grow into decent people, and no one is giving it, and these crazies have noticed and are using it as breeding ground for soldiers for their cause. The decent people side must create something for them even if it's to avoid them falling into these dens of craziness.

    Aesthesiaphilia,

Exactly. The response among the left seems to be "ha, fuck em" which is a terrible plan

    "Atheists are so mean!" (lemmy.one)

A common trope I see in atheist circles are people (often claiming to be atheists themselves, and I’m sure many genuinely are) going around chiding other atheists for being mean, rude, or otherwise disrespectful to believers. It’s counterproductive! It doesn’t work! It paints us in a bad light!...

"Block The Rich" is like an ad-blocker, but for obscenely wealthy people with overinflated egos. (lemm.ee)

About 8 months ago I got pretty tired of seeing billionaire spam online. I could not bear to read about yet another rich guy who launched themselves (or their $200,000 car) into outer space 🚀 . I did not care about their expert opinion on the latest meme coin back then. I do not care about their expert opinion on the dangers...

I’ve always believed it would be useful to have a thing like this but for brand logos.

But instead of blurring or blocking the brand logo like an adblocker what it does instead is show you the face of the top shareholder in that brand. Remove the brands and show the assholes that own them. Where it’s not a single person you replace that brand with the name of the hedgefund or bank that owns the investment.

It would bring people’s attention away from brand consumerism and to a constant consciousness of the ruling class looming over them in everything.

    gravitywell,

Now might be a great time to join the Fediverse alternative FunkWhale. I’ve already built up a collection of nearly 10,000 songs on mine, almost all of which i downloaded from deezer.
