Sick of hearing about record heat? Scientists say those numbers paint the story of a warming world: With a summer of extreme weather records dominating the news, meteorologists and scientists say records like these give a glimpse of the big picture: a warming planet caused by climate change. https://phys.org/news/2023-07-sick-scientists-story-world.html
The climate records that are being broken regionally are a direct consequence of the trends shown above. If you read the article @readbeanicecream was kind enough to share, then you would have read that. "Records go back to the late 19th century, and we can see that there has been a decade-on-decade increase in temperatures," said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, keeper of the agency's climate records."
So no, I don't think this is sensationalist or misleading at all. You just need to dig past the headline a little bit. A headline that accurately reflects what scientists are saying is a direct consequence of the general trend that's going to continue to get worse and break more records into the future.
Does anyone have any advice on whether to use #threads or #microblogs when you're looking to say, start a discussion about a topic on #kbin? Is there an etiquette for what option is best? Or do people just pick depending on their mood (having a Twitter vs a Reddit sort of a day)?
No, actually. There have been enough covid infections that everyone could have had an infection. Plenty of people haven't had covid, while others have had it a stupid amount of time, and here's a poll to prove it
That's it! A nice thing about Lemmy is you don't really need to be logged in to use it. Since the focus is communities rather than personal feeds you can just click around logged out until you want to comment.
@mcc Hello from Kbin! I think this is pretty neat too. I migrated to Kbin after Reddit announced their API changes. I never had a twitter account, so it's blowing my mind right now that I'm able to interface with platforms like Mastadon easily from Kbin.
I might be missing something, but how do I see posts or communities / magazines from other fediverse like lemmy or other kbin instances? on lemmy I can choose to sort by 'All' which will show me all posts from every federated sites including kbin.
one more thing : what does 'boost' do ? is it different from the up arrow ?
Regarding boosts, they are similar to upvoting. The two differences I'm aware of are:
Currently, "Reputation points" are lost when your posts are downvoted, but gained when posts are boosted. I'll try to find it, but somewhere Ernest mentions that this is subject to change and that someday upvotes will raise reputation instead to keep it consistent. If you're coming from reddit, think of reputation as net karma. I'm not sure if reputation actually does anything other than appear as a number on your profile.
Upvotes and downvotes are normally utilized for instances that are set up like forums, like Kbin. Whereas boosts are more intended for Mastodon and other "Twitter" inspired type of instances. We can interface with Mastodon from Kbin, so we can also use boosts.
As you browse Kbin, you may also notice that there are "threads" and "microblogs". This is a similar phenomenon, threads are for forums and microblogs are for instances like Mastodon. So upvote/downvote threads, boost microblogs.
At least that's how I understand things currently, still learning myself.
