Cory Doctorow: Kickstarting a book to end enshittification, because Amazon will not carry it (pluralistic.net)

From the author: My next book is The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation: it’s a Big Tech disassembly manual that explains how to disenshittify the web and bring back the old good internet. The hardcover comes from Verso on Sept 5, but the audiobook comes from me – because Amazon refuses to sell my audio.

Emissions are no longer following the worst case scenario (www.theclimatebrink.com)

Ultimately, the progress we have made should encourage us that progress is possible, but the large and growing gap between where we are headed today and what is needed to limit warming to well-below 2C means that we need to double down and light a (carbon-free) fire under policymakers to ratchet up emissions reductions over the...

Johnson & Johnson are extending their patent on bedaquiline which will kill a lot of people (youtu.be)

Tell Johnson and Johnson that evergreening their patent on bedaquiline, which will deny millions of people access to live-saving treatment, is a violation of their corporate credo: https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/media/en/gui/28704/report.html...

/kbin project management costs, financing, future plans

I wrote the first line of code for /kbin on January 14, 2021. Around this time, I started working remotely and decided that the time I used to spend commuting to the office would be devoted to /kbin. Throughout this entire period, /kbin has been a hobby project that I developed in my free time. It was also when Lemmy started...

The purpose and function of the police and the courts is the protection of capital from the people. Some cases illustrate this more clearly than others. This is one of them.

Oh fuck no. The very first line is basically a HIPAA violation. It gets worse from there. We require less disclosure from Supreme Court Justices and Presidential nominees.

This is a trainwreck waiting to happen - even if Facebook itself doesn't abuse this level of power, you know that bad actors within the organization will. And once the information is collected, you know that tyrannical governments all over the world will be falling over themselves to get access to the data. This is a stalker's wetdream, an Orwellian orgasm of truly grotesque proportions.

Keep the Fediverse from Zucking. Just say no to Threads.

Those are the total user stats they represent how many accounts have been registered over all Lemmy instances. With bots registering 80000+ new accounts on some of the open instances, these stats are not very representative of the actual userbase.

That's why we usually look at the active last 30 days stats instead of the total users stats because they represent actual users using this site while the botted accounts usually lay dormant.

Since the first of July, looking at the accounts active in the last 30 days, the active userbase of Lemmy has grown by approximately 7000-8000 users while the userbase of Kbin has grown by approximately 2000 users. Which is still not a bad number but not as great as 2 Mio..

smoll_pp_operator,

Economic inequality cannot be explained by individual bad choices, study finds (phys.org)

A global study led by a researcher at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that economic inequality on a social level cannot be explained by bad choices among the poor nor by good decisions among the rich. Poor decisions were the same across all income groups,...
