LONDON

London | Playing at the Sondheim Theatre (previously known as the Queen's Theatre) is the 25th anniversary production produced by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell.

London, for many years, was the only city where you could see the original Cam Mack production directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird (the one with the memorial revolve, ie the iconic turntable), but that production ended its tenure at the theatre on 13 July 2019. The new, now standard, production (featuring production design by Matt Kinley inspired by Victor Hugo's paintings, but - alas - no revolve) moved in after an extensive renovation of the theatre on 16 January 2020.

Les Miz has actually played in no less than six London venues since its English language premiere in 1985:

  • The Barbican Centre's Barbican Theatre (both in its very first Royal Shakespeare Company production in 1985 and also for a few weeks in 2010 as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations)
  • The Palace Theatre (where the RSC/Cam Mack production transferred after its Barbican run and where it played in the West End until 2004)
  • The Royal Albert Hall (for the 10th anniversary concert)
  • The Queen's/Sondheim Theatre (home to the show since 2004 aside from the breaks required by Covid and the theatre's renovation)
  • The Gielgud Theatre (where a concert staged version played for several months while the Queen's Theatre was being renovated)
  • The O2 Arena (as it was known then), for the two 25th anniversary concerts in 2010.

London also has the distinction of hosting three professional productions simultaneously, as part of the "Weekend of Total Mizery" in October 2010, when the original Nunn/Caird version played at the Queen's, the (then) new UK tour Connor/Powell version played at the Barbican, and the 25th anniversary concert was staged at the O2 Arena.

The current London cast (as of July 2023) is led by Josh Piterman (Valjean), Stewart Clarke (Javert), Lucie Jones (Fantine), Nathania Ong (Eponine), Robert Tripolino (Marius), Lulu-Mae Pears (Cosette), Gerard Carey (Thenardier), Claire Machin (Madame Thenardier) and Harry Chandler (Enjolras).

US TOUR

United States Tour | The most recent US tour has stops planned (as of July 2023) for Utah, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, New York state, Georgia, Florida, and Massachusetts, as well as stops in Ontario (Canada). The detailed tour schedule is here and is currently showing stops to August 2024. This is the Connor/Powell version, now standard for all Cameron Mackintosh-produced productions.

There have been multiple US tours of the show since the late 1980s, both of the original Nunn/Caird version and the more recent Connor/Powell version. This most recent tour launched in September 2017 and was shuttered during Covid in 2020, but restarted in October 2022.

The current US tour cast (as of July 2023) features Nick Cartell (Valjean), Preston Truman Boyd (Javert), Haley Dortch (Fantine), Christine Heesun Hwang (Eponine), Gregory Lee Rodriguez (Marius), Addie Morales (Cosette), Matt Crowle (Thenardier), Christina Rose Hall (Madame Thenardier) and Devin Archer (Enjolras).

Just as Roddenberry's utopian future transcends sexism, racism, ableism and other isms, so too does the cold-blooded calculation of the corporate accountant. Networks will cancel shows that lose money and renew shows that make money over whatever timeframe their cost/benefit ratio is run on. Personally, I think Prodigy is a breath of fresh air for the franchise, and cancelling it/removing it the network is a mistake from a brand/franchise/portfolio management perspective. But spinning its cancellation as an example of misogyny is silly. You might as well argue that Paramount hates kids cause there are many more children as main characters in the show and only one adult woman.

Kbin also has this karma/points system which feels odd. It skews into the negative VERY easily and is displayed on your profile

I agree this is odd and unintuitive. @ernest is aware of this issue: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/80

It's probably related to the issue of how upvotes, downvotes and favourites are treated in kbin, lemmy and mastodon (and other fediverse apps). See https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/3

The immediate future of the subreddit [r/chess] is in question after our latest subreddit poll. Results and the situation so far (www.reddit.com)

Mods made a poll to ask whether to extend the blackout or re-open. After accusations of brigading, mods created a second, more secure poll. The option to extend the blackout wins by a 18% margin. However, the top mod changes his mind, unilaterally decides that the sub should open, and threatens the rest of the mods with...

[x-post]Private beta for Artemis App (for kbin/Lemmy) will be rolling out at the end of June 2023. (kbin.social)

Hariette is hard at work to create an alpha release that is stable enough to start rolling out. Follow https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp (!ArtemisApp for you Lemmy users) for more updates and announcements on the app....

@Lilkev You may want to edit the link to Hariette's kbin page to https://kbin.social/u/hariette (instead of https://kbin.social/u/@hariette)

@Lilkev I didn't realise that the URL was inserted automatically. Not sure if it helps, but on lemmy the link also points to the same incorrect URL (ie a URL with the @ sign in front of the user name instead of without the @ sign).

Season 1 Episode 23

I’ve been watching TNG for the first time and so far season 1 has been hit or miss. Ether a episode will be really good or really bad. So far I think episode 23 is a really good episode! I hope that Tasha isn’t actually dead. I liked her and thought she was a gorgeous woman! This is the one and only time I will ever want...

@DarthonTV "Skin of Evil" gets a lot of flak for its dodgy special effects, but it's one of my favourite episodes in season 1 (along with "Coming of Age" and "The Big Goodbye"). I love the suddenness and senselessness of Tasha's death, the concept of a race that has cleaved its evil nature into a separate being which it then abandoned, and the holodeck farewell scene, especially the final shot. It's also a really good Troi episode. Lord knows she didn't get a lot of them, especially in the first season.

@admin Thanks for the rapid response.

I just tried creating /m/musicals so that this could act as a placeholder to /m/Musicals. However when attempting to do so, I get a "This value is already used." error.

So it seems that Kbin does not allow you to create magazines with the same name but different cases, but still requires you to enter the right capitalisation when going to the magazine.

@admin Thanks again.

I'm now able to browse codeberg and have found the relevant issue entries:

I see this also currently applies to user names:

On the mobile PWA how do I quickly see what magazines I am subscribed to?

For the life of me I can't figure this out. I want to quickly jump to a magazine (or now a series of magazines from different instances) that I am subscribed to I was expecting to see something like "my subscriptions" or "my magazines" or similar but must be blind because I don't see this in an easy place....

Prouvaire,
Prouvaire avatar

@mannycalavera I too find the lack of a quick "jump to" function annoying.

You can use a link like this: https://kbin.social/u/your name/subscriptions

Eg https://kbin.social/u/mannycalavera/subscriptions (Note this link will only work for /u/mannycalavera)

But it would be more convenient if it was accessible from the main page.

@AnonymousLlama I like forum software that offers a range of reactions (ala vBulletin / XenForo). The default reaction could be a simple "Like" with an additional click or two required to change the reaction to Informative, Agree, Funny, Sad etc. Two of these reactions (probably positioned last to add that extra little bit of friction) might be Disagree and Off-Topic.

But if this is too convoluted, maybe just cap the number of downvotes a post/thread can get. So if a post gets 5 (or whatever the cap number is) downvotes, additional downvotes do not change the downvote counter. This would discourage "piling on" but there'd still be an indicator that a post might be poor quality or contentious. On the other hand, upvotes should probably be unlimited (or have a higher cap number) to encourage positive feedback.

something like this exists for Mastodon users

I believe Mastodon allows you to transfer your followers list, but not any content you generated, such as messages or likes. You can export both followers and content, but at the moment there's no way of importing content to new instances, only your followers.

Now the creator has gone inactive and hasn't been around for for 4 days.

Question from someone who might want to start a couple of magazines/communities: Is being away for four days long enough to be considered inactive?
