"Insane" is not a medical or psychological term or concept.

It's a legal term, but is often used as a folk term, as a slur.

Libraries are amazing. I’m a bit biased because my wife is a library administrator, but so many people don’t know what libraries have available. Ours, and this isn’t a big city, has free 3D printers, online ebooks, audiobooks and streaming movies, fun kits you can take home with you like a ukulele with an instruction book, a PS5 and an HTC Vive in the teen room, even a pancake printer. It prints pancakes in any shape you design in some simple drawing software. How cool is that?

They’re opening a new branch and they’re going to include, again for free, a room with a lockable door and a sign-up sheet that has a shower and a washer and dryer in it. One person at a time, but think about how many impoverished people could use a shower and some clean clothes. And the library is there to help them.

But these people think all libraries do is give porn to children or whatever.

California is suing to stop schools from outing trans kids to their parents (www.politico.com)

State Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit Monday to stop a Southern California school district from outing transgender students to their parents, arguing that the policy violates students’ civil and constitutional rights and could cause them “mental emotional, psychological, and potential physical harm.”...

admiralteal,

They claim it's "parental rights", but these same people will not even hesitate for a MOMENT to dismiss the rights of the parents if it means interfering with conservative values. They'll ban books the parents want their kids to access, refuse to use pronouns/identities requested by parents, proselytize children against the faith of the family (because the SCOTUS has all but abandoned the establishment clause as a limit on state-sanctioned religious activity), forbid teaching subjects like black history that parents want their children to know about, and anything else that is part of their culture war.

Conservatism is a cancer on society.

It’s amazing how people convinced themselves they need all these platforms in their lives. Meta, X, TikTok, YouTube - they can do whatever they want to their users, and the users just take it.

I’ve learned to drop social media platforms as soon as they pull shit I’m uncomfortable with and live a happy life, somehow.

America's richest 10% are responsible for 40% of its planet-heating pollution, new report finds (www.cnn.com)

America’s wealthiest people are also some of the world’s biggest polluters – not only because of their massive homes and private jets, but because of the fossil fuels generated by the companies they invest their money in.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever,

No, it is not caused by crunch culture.

It is caused by implicit, or even explicit, support by leadership. It is caused by a culture where even the managers make fun of the sexual harassment training. And it is caused by a culture where it rapidly becomes clear that the squeaky wheel gets fired.

Crunch does hurt morale, a lot. But that usually results in more people muttering “fuck” during a meeting or getting snippy.

Abuse and assault are not caused by that. You don’t get tired and suddenly think it is fine to grab someone’s ass or refer to their “tits”. You do that because you are an asshole who knows you can get away with it because your management team have made it clear that they either do the same or care more about you than anyone else.

LoamImprovement,

Look, I can’t say that I don’t understand the sentiment, but people calling YouTubers out on their bullshit is strictly better than ‘Nobody ever cares about anything outside of their 60 hour a week jobs that they work to pay for an overinflated cost of living in this hypercapitalist dystopia hellscape that they don’t have the emotional capacity to care about because of said 60 hour a week jobs.’

I want to hear about this because it means somebody still cares, somebody is still paying attention to the injustice, however trivial or removed from daily life it is.

Greg Rutkowski Was Removed From Stable Diffusion, But AI Artists Brought Him Back - Decrypt (decrypt.co)

Greg Rutkowski, a digital artist known for his surreal style, opposes AI art but his name and style have been frequently used by AI art generators without his consent. In response, Stable Diffusion removed his work from their dataset in version 2.0. However, the community has now created a tool to emulate Rutkowski’s style...

Pulse,

Yes, because “imitate” and “copy” are different things when stealing from someone.

I do understand how it works, the “overfitting” was just laying clear what it does. It copies but tries to sample things in a way that won’t look like clear copies. It had no creativity, it is trying to find new ways of making copies.

If any of this was ethical, the companies doing it would have just asked for permission. That they didn’t says a everything you need to know.

I don’t usually have these kinds discussions anymore, I got tired of conversations like this back in 2016, when it became clear that people will go to the ends of the earth to justify unethical behavior as long as the people being hurt by it are people they don’t care about.

Hogger85b,

People who work full time jobs and still need to up benefits like food stamps etc means it is a benefit to the employer as it subsides them making more profits by employing people below sustaining their life. Minimum wage ensures the company pays for that labour.

I'm a mentally ill cripple with multiple chronic illnesses and severe social anxiety. I've been in spots in my life before where government assistance of multiple kinds has been the difference between life and death. Don't give me the 'You're being dramatic' bullshit unless you've vomited blood to the point of near exsanguination, had to ration life-saving medication, had breakdowns on the side of a freeway, shattered a thigh, went quite literally without food for days for lack of means, etc etc etc etc. In all of those cases, government programs have, at least once and often multiple times, been the difference between life and death for me.

Go fuck yourself.

sensibilidades,

Can't trust these companies to do what's right.

This has to be drilled into the collective consciousness as much as possible. There is no such thing as an ethical corporation, or an ethical company that is for-profit -- they simply cannot be ethical, they are amoral by design. If Target or Walmart or Netflix do something that is seen as positive, the only reason is a profit motive, not because they are moving towards being 'good'.

Lemmy.ml is blocking all requests from /kbin Instances

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...

argv_minus_one,

Takeaways:

  • End-to-end encryption works.
  • The only trustworthy computer is your computer. Don't use cloud storage.
  • The only trustworthy software is open-source software. Proprietary software serves the interests of the proprietor, not the user.

All of this was already well-known, of course, but it's always nice to get confirmation.
