I think my favorite thing about Lemmy is that it feels like Reddit used to. Less negativity, more engaged users (I think). I know it will be fun to watch Reddit die, but if I put spite aside what I’m really mad at Reddit about is more about what Reddit became and maybe part of that is when the general internet user started...
I think Reddit will slowly bleed users as the experience gets worse but it won't collapse altogether.
I agree. It will be interesting to see if they can attract a larger number of casual users who don't care about their TOS and lack of API support for developers, or if the site dramatically loses its worth and ends up being sold for a much lower price (like what happened with MySpace).
I could see a series of successors come about eventually.
I hope you're right about this. Many of us who grew up with a much more fractured browsing experience miss it a lot. It would be good if there were hundreds - or even thousands - of reddit-alternatives, all with a few thousand regular posters each.
@Philsan This is incredible! Is this a resurrected online game, or one which has been newly developed? Either way, it's awesome to see old hardware being used with love.
So i may or may not get into game dev but im thinking of using a fantasy console becasue of lua or maybe godot becasue everyone says to use godot i guess. ive treid running unreal, unity on my low en dpc but they just dont work also there not really open source and open source is cool. i havent really made a game before i usally...
My experience with game development is fairly cursory, but I actually found Tic-80 to be a lot of fun, and a fantastic way to get used to game dev concepts without becoming too tied down learning about semantics (although, if you continue to pursue serious programming, taking semantics seriously and practicing them should definitely be part of your approach).
The main thing when learning any type of coding is that you're learning to do things that interest you. After that, a lot of what you'll learn is actually quite transferable.
So, my recommendation is Tic-80. Can I just ask, though: what passes for a "low end pc" these days? (I ask this as someone who was stuck using a Pentium 4 until September 2017, and so my current 2nd gen i5 still feels light it's lightning-quick!)
Great post. The Internet Archive is a wonderful resource; I particularly enjoy browsing their vintage gaming magazine/fanzine collections, and reading old copies of High Times!
@OutofPrintArchive Holy smokes! I was aware of a couple of video game magazine scan sites, but I have never heard of OutOfPrintArchive. Thanks for sharing :)
I'm personally a big fan of Joplin. Even though it's something I tend to go for periods without using, I always come back to it and remember why I started keeping notes with it in the first place: it's a great way to keep my to do lists and thoughts organized, it can be backed up and sync'd easily, it can export to a number of formats, and it's very intuitive (if you're using the desktop app rather than the terminal based one, it has a lovely interface which is Markdown compatible).
unfortunately nearly all alternatives to popular online services are mostly populated with radical right-wing nutjobs.
It's sad how accurate this statement is. I was excited about the prospects of several of these new video websites, and then they either died out or maintained an active community of paranoid lunatics. On one particular video-sharing website, the phrase "mRNA" is still thrown around on a daily basis (at least, it was the last time I checked a few months ago). Paranoia and confirmation bias thrives in these echo chambers.
Perhaps one day avoiding highly centralised, privacy invading services will be considered the normal thing to do.
This is my hope
To OP: I'm still confused why they'd prefer you to be curb-stomped by a meth-addled vagrant. It's like saying "I hope that the person who ends up brutally murdering you is well-traveled and open to new experiences".
@stpaultim I'm inclined to agree with this. Surely - if the information had somehow leaked out - it would have been covered by a journalist using an anonymous source?
Even if it was true, wouldn't the most likely scenario be that Meta were talking with the Fedi devs to try to ensure that their P92 project was properly implemented?
When WSL2 first came out, some losers on /g/ were cheering that it would "make Linux obsolete". Four years later, I think it's safe to say they were kinda missing the point. (vlemmy.net)

Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

Raspberry Pi is on Mastodon! (raspberrypi.social)
Raspberry Pi has an official presence over on raspberrypi.social!...
Game devs of lemmy, what are the best game engines for beginners, also why so?

What is the most useful website you know?
I'm always eager to find new amazing sites i've never heard of, which ones would you recommend?
r/ModCoord has officially recommended migration off of Reddit.
kbin.social was the first thing on the recommended list.
