So let's say you use your credit card to buy drinks at the bar every single night. This data gets to the health insurance company and they might raise your rates. I remember 15+ years ago talking about credit data with people who were involved. This is before facebook was anywhere as big as it is now (to give context). I worked for a company that developed software for POS terminals and no one ever heard of the company I worked for except this girl I met from American express. They wanted so badly to get data from us.

2 ) Working at home is making the middle manager obsolete. I think google's ceo said that he didn't know how to promote managers he cant see. I personally think mamagement is corporate welfare.
Just thought I’d share something I thought was pretty interesting. I have a mother in law who is… well let’s just say she’s a stereotypical older mom who doesn’t own a computer, just an iPad. During the pandemic, she started getting into Nintendo games and bought herself a Switch. Fast forward a few years later and...
Given the huge success that the first installment ended up being, we can't forget that Cities: Skylines 2 is just around the corner and is, in its own right,
after reading the article the title seems backwards. the article talks about weather and climates which is part of the base game but they were added in the first game through dlc.
I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....
If you removed the noise from the signal , the signal was very good. When twitter first started there was a great talk about finding survivors and infornation in an earthquake. it was a great tool for crowdsourcing event ands info. It later gave people closer access to companies and people. But, i do agree, there was a lot of noise. i hope the signal finds home on the fediverse with mastadon or whatever.
What harm does public data have to you? Couldn’t one just ignore the ads? You can’t see anyone watching you, is public data good for public records? (I’m just curious). I know this sounds weird but is public data good for historical preservation and knowledge increasing the importance of the individual? And does public...
i think women who want the freedom to decide what they can do with their own bodies shows you how important privacy is. the was a cop in california sending out of state licenses to the home state governmemt to report women crossi g state lines for abortions.
you are conflating the web and the internet. they arent the same thing. you are still using the internet. the world wide web is an application the runs ON the internet.
I have most of the Fediverse-based account and seem to have just gravitated towards Lemmy over Kbin as found it very confusing, What makes you prefer Kbin over Lemmy or any other Fediverse instances?
I am looking for a game system for a modern urban fantasy campaign that I have built. The world is as if a standard fantasy world exists in 2023 on Earth. I am having difficulty finding a system I think would do this style of campaign justice, and could really use some help....
i am asking to learn. how do you see it as grindy? what is not grindy?i moved to savage worlds be ause it felt more streamlined. sure something like Fate is super simple but savage feels quick. same to hit with all weapons at the same range.
Not sure whats going on, I open the case with the buds in hold down the button and put it in pairing. The Steam Deck sees it but won’t pair with it. Idk what’s going on. I have reset it, disconnected it from the iPhone, idk what else to try. Desktop mode and Game mode won’t pair :-/
I have both a Mastadon and Lemmy account (actually two) as well as a kbin account so I’m fine with having several. It’s interesting to see the interconnectivity of the two platforms. I’d love to see more of this.
I’ll go first, I took my mom’s college textbooks which came with discs for a couple distros and failed to install RHEL before managing to get Fedora Core 4 working. The first desktop environment I used was KDE and despite trying out a few others over the years I always come back to plasma. Due to being like 12, I wanted to...
so linus made his first linux post when i was in highschool. (freshman). i didnt know of it but thats what wikipedia says. windows 95 came out when i was in college and by my junior year i knew about linux. in our networking class most everything was unix, one sun machine and the instructor got linux on one or two. students would rush to get the linux machines. it was seen as a better unix. at that point it wasnt seen as a desktop alternative just a better server experience. right before windows xp came out, i built a new computer for xp and used a disc from a magazine with redhat. installed it on their ma hi e and it didnt work because the hardware was to new. i soon got XP and learned about boot loaders.had to call microsoft since xp wouldnt install. tbe guy just recently i stalled linux on a few machines and helped me out.
didnt try linux again till broadband and the web was more of a thing.
this doesnt surprise me. what surprises me is how many people on the fediverse are excited to use it. i honestly thought everyone currently on lemmy and kbin would go no where near it.
I'm old now. I've finally realised I get more enjoyment from watching someone play than to actually play the game. Why is that? Do you experience that as well?
depends on the DLC. some DLCs are like expansion packs. not a fan of microtransactions but love included updates like minecraft, terraria, satisfactory etc
Just wondering because I’m not sure yet myself. I’ve read that many of the core mechanics would be updated/changed even in the base game. Because of that I’m thinking about starting from the beginning.
This isn't true. There was always hate but with social media bad people find more bad people. Hell, when the first issue of captain America came out, it had a picture of Cap punching Hitler. They received death threats, not just on the phone but in the street.
The main difference in my childhood was that I never heard from people of hate because i grew up in a very liberal area. There wasn't a good way for them to organize.
With basically almost every company collecting all our data at all times, who exactly are they selling it too? Wouldn't all these companies by this point have all yhe same information?
Granted, all my shit is blocked and what not, to the best I can do. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

Why is it so much more amusing to watch someone play a video game than it is to play the game itself?

For those who grew up without DLCs and microtransactions and games went unchanged after launch. How has the adjustment been to current day monetization and game updates?
Has there been changes to what games you choose to buy and play?
I don't get people that are here in the fediverse and *want to bring over* the content that is on FB, IG, TikTok, etc.
This has come to mind because all the chatter about Meta federating....
