Annecdotally, I drive a work van that all day that sits high so I can see most people in their cars. I’ve noticed nearly every age group texting while driving except for seniors.

Ukraine’s American-Made M39 Missiles May Have Wrecked 21 Russian Helicopters In A Single Operation (www.forbes.com)

The damage from Ukraine’s first-ever strike with American-supplied M39 missiles, targeting a pair of helicopter bases in Russian-occupied southern and eastern Ukraine, likely resulted in greater damage than even the Ukrainian defense ministry initially claimed....

Hyperreality,

Blowing stuff up and tax cuts for rich people.

Flickerby,

I feel for what you went through but trying to equate having a need for a secret bank account hidden from your spouse to an uncle stealing funds from a minor is ingenious at best and absolutely laughable at best. There is obviously a difference between the two and if you don’t realize that, I assume you must be a little too young to even weigh in. If you feel that unless you have a secret stash of cash you’re in physical danger from your spouse then DO NOT MARRY THAT PERSON. it’s not that complicated. Marriage isn’t a joke or something to lightly go into. It’s like saying “I don’t trust you enough to not cheat on me so I’m going to keep a side man/woman on the side just in case. What? You don’t like that?? That is a chillingly selfish betrayal of trust how dare you!” Just don’t get married and merge accounts until you trust the person it’s not that complicated, if you don’t trust them enough for that, don’t get married, simple as.

randombullet,

Just remember it’s always about the profits.

Just like how they stopped selling chargers for the sake of reducing e-waste. Even though they can save on shipping weights and charge extra for 1st party chargers.

Now is it worse for the environment to produce extra chargers and cables? Or the secondary purchases, shipping, and manufacturing? I can’t tell you the actual impact.

Oh and remember the absolute trash 1A/5V charging bricks they included for the longest time ever? They hardly even pushed out 18w bricks before they nixed the entire included charger crap.

Child poverty in the United States just more than doubled. You can thank Joe Manchin. (www.motherjones.com)

The United States’ poverty rate experienced its largest one-year jump on record last year, with the rate among children more than doubling from 2021’s historic low of 5.2 percent to 12.4 percent according to new numbers from the US Census Bureau out today. They’re the latest data to reflect the devastating effects...

PonyOfWar,

I think a big difference is the temporary nature of threads on Lemmy/Reddit. On forums, a new reply pushes a thread back to the front of the page, which leads to discussions that can go on for months or years. On Lemmy, a discussion is active for a few days at most, with the exception of stickied threads. It leads to a different discussion culture and I do sometimes miss that aspect of forums.

Average long-term US mortgage rate climbs to 7.09% this week to highest level in more than 20 years (abcnews.go.com)

The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate climbed this week to its highest level in more than 20 years, grim news for would-be homebuyers already challenged by a housing market that remains competitive due to a dearth of homes for sale.

Hazdaz,

7% is still considered low by historic data.

IT is being funded now. WE spend more than most other countries per capita and get much worse results with the possible exception of the USA, and yet the Tories want to pursue the US model. Why? Well because it will make them richer. They do not care that we will be more unhealthy as a consequence and it will cost us more money to follow this route.

We need to get rid of the mates infrastructure that has been inflicted on us. We also need to rethink how we do healthcare. If other countries have ideas that are clearly working then why would you not investigate that option?

As for lack of confidence, why not just do some research with the Nufield trust who benchmark how the NHS does. Working on a gut feeling is not the best way to look for the correct solution. Look at the facts and base a conclusion from that.

Edited second sentence to reflect more than most.

Turkey_Titty_city,

no. they don't. there are too many phd programs. Graduate studies outside of applied fields is a ponzi scheme.

all a phd program is cheap labor for universities. which is precisely why they want to expand them, so they don't have to hire faculty.

there should be far less phd programs in academia period.

The reason why they say this was murder:

Two weeks before the crash, she allegedly threatened to crash her vehicle when she was driving with Russo because she was upset over a disagreement they had. Russo called his mother and asked to be picked up, and a friend ended up retrieving him. In a phone call with Russo, the friend allegedly overheard Shirilla say, “I will crash this car right now,” prosecutors said in court documents.

This isn’t a drunk driver, or a thrillseeker, this is someone with murderous intent.

I think he’d say, “Please spell my name right.”

I think he’d want more kiddie porn — he had a definite urge in that direction.

I think Aaron Swartz was a complicated guy who did some good but had some enormous issues to say the least, and the ongoing worship of him as a hero is not a good idea.

Notice there is only 1 full headline (from /r/NoStupidQuestions) visible, it doesn’t even show the full post. There are 3 of those “trending” boxes but only 2 of those even fit their headlines because they are like 3 words long, they cut off anything longer including the description...

Quill7513,

Things that work aren’t profitable (enough). A thing that works is good for expanding customer base. A thing that almost works is good for profit per customer base. The thing is… A thing that works and is sustainable to maintain provides the most long term profits. There’s no legal requirement a company grow in scope, but most investors (both in small and large companies) see that as the only way. Reddit has been operating on an unsustainable business model. Their core feature set is simple. Their userbase was loyal, and willing to pay for Reddit gold to directly keep the website running. The holes in their sustainability were a huge staff to develop features to grow their customer base despite no one wanting or asking for those features, a terrible ad model that left money on the table by not putting ads where they’d have the most effect (why did I always get Ford ads on r/FuckCars, never Taco Bell ads on r/ShittyFoodPorn, no small online stationary shops on r/FountainPens?) and not returning ads in API calls, and finally an API model that went from free to impossible to justify overnight. But no one on the board of directors is interested in a business that consistently makes money over the long term. They want to make as much money as possible all in one go.

Let me ask you this. Which is better? To run a small coffee roaster that employs 8 people and serves coffee through one physical shop and one online store front to a loyal fan base by serving a high quality product in small batches, or to be massive coffee company, shadowed in scale only by Starbucks and Peets, but going into bankruptcy because you can’t keep up with Starbucks and Peets? I’d take the consistent sustainable business every time, but too many people want to be the big winner with the bankrupt company, and the result is the small investors, the ones who bought into the big coffee company, or Reddit, end up holding the bag while the people who took their money deploy their golden parachutes

bouh,

You are clueless about how nuclear wastes or radiation work. Any oil tanker sinking is a worst disaster than the worst nuclear accident ever was. A nuclear power plant is not a bomb. Radiations are not a magic disaster that erase life.

Meanwhile co2 is an actual life extinction threat, and Germany opened coal power plant to compensate for nuclear energy. What a great move ecologists! Bravo !

MonsiuerPatEBrown,

This is why some US Americans want armed teachers ?

To shoot back at 6 year olds ?

Did the "American dream" change over time, or was it just my interpretation of it?

So growing up, I had this idea that the American dream was about that if you put in an honest amount of work, you would be rewarded with a good life. This would mean you would be able to take care of yourself and your family, afford a car and a house. In my view, working one job would probably be enough....

Reganonomics

NXTR,

The American dream is essentially trying to tell people that the United States is a meritocratic society. The more work you put in the more you get out. However, I’m sure most of us know this isn’t true. Where you were born and what family you were born into is the primary factor in determining someone’s success. So you grow up hearing stories of “hard working” billionaires and think “I can make it there if I work hard” while ignoring your family who worked their asses off and got nowhere. You see more of the lie of meritocracy as you age. People around you work hard and fail, you might succeed with less effort or fail with more. The idiotic decisions of today’s billionaires solidifies the notion that the American dream never existed and was fabricated to get people to work more for less in the hopes that one day they will make it. In reality, it all comes down to the zip code you were born in.

Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive

I got an invite code and so spent a bit of time browsing around because I'd heard good things about it. But I was surprised at how basic and non-diverse it all is. The forums are preset and are very generic. The conversations are definitely better than Reddit, but no better or worse than the ones I've had with people on Fedi....

waterbogan,

I’ve heard that users there have been banned for obscure and arbitrary reasons or no reason at all… just like reddit. That’s why I’m here, not going somewhere else for more of the same shit as reddit. Havent had an invite and not really interested

RaoulDook,

I’m not fragile at all, I’m the one who is brave enough to point out this bullshit. Racists can eat a pile of shit, and I will point them out every time.

Publishing headlines like that is intentionally divisive, and puts all the well-meaning white men in a bad position - do we put up with being all lumped in as a generalization with something negative like that, or point it out and get called “fragile” by dumbasses?

RaoulDook,

What a racist headline. Imagine if someone wrote a headline like that about black men. “Black men are super spreaders of AIDS” or something. Way to alienate people

Turkey_Titty_city,

well gay men were superspreaders of AIDs. But it's not really PC to acknowledge that in 2023.

It's just rage-baiting headline. It's corporations owned by rich old white guys that are the key factors in climate derailment... but that's not as catchy.

sadreality,

Wow socialism really is ruining america... At this rate every child will be able to have a free meal by 2100! Disgusting

This is a typical internet story where a moderate space about reducing porn consumption and then it gets taken over by extremists. NoFap is typical sex negative talk packages for men and young boys for the internet age. It focus on something simple like reducing porn use until it becomes a full sex negative no masturbation's and no sex philosophy.

The shame around masturbation is immense even if you don't get it from church. This is an attack male sexuality and reduces it into a simple phallic centric ejaculation focused instead of a whole body pleasure focused. This also ties really well into a female centric sex negative attack on porn in general which doubles up on the shame on men. The two together help support and create this false "cheating" definition and jealousy of toxic monogamist relationships. The idea that since we are monogamist neither of us has any other attraction is an insane and is impossible for both men and women. This ties into the PIV procreation focused sex that is the only "correct" sex which leads the both people unsatisfied with women's pleasure completely ignored and men's pleasure reduced to a single second and the "thrill of conquest". These dovetail create to shame men for taking care of their own needs with porn and masturbation to focus on guilting and coercing their spouse into giving them low pleasure sex.

Moreover, this is super kink negative with the idea that kinky sex and porn being an escalation and not an innate part of humans sexualities. While men may not be kinkier than women they for sure get their kinks earlier. These kinks are almost explored in a visual medium since most require one or more willing partner and technical skills. These kinks should be explored this way as it starts until all partners find out what they want, learn the technical and emotional skill without causing lasting emotional or physical damage to both partners.

While there are some problems in mainstream porn since its used a replacement for real sex education and is built for some misogynistic viewers. However, there is more ethically created porn out there. Ironically NoFap usually attack the most ethical created porn in OnlyFans which gives the power directly to the female creator instead of the generally male lead mainstream porn industry. Porn is always going to exist and if people actually cared about human trafficking and ethical treatment of women they would support those who create it well.
