Saki,

Get Tor Browser and/or Tails OS. When privacy is important and you need to be anonymous, use only Tor-friendly instances only via Tor (never once log in showing your real IP - if you accidentally do that, you’ll have to re-create another account as a different person).

When an email address is necessary to sign up, get one anonymously (again using Tor Browser), from a privacy-centric company or group, e.g. Tutanota, Disroot. Needless to say never ever use Gmail. tosdr.org/en/service/217

SamsonSeinfelder,

Wherever I setup a new VM/PC and install FF, I always have to reset so many things:

  • Standard search SearXNG/DDG
  • New tab = blank page (privacy, no 3rd party request on new tab opening)
  • Delete Amazon, Google, etc ( out of spite)
  • Opt-out of analytics and studies
  • Change theme to dark
  • Add shortcut for other searches
  • Install ublock origin and ublock matrix (apparently redundant now, but I like visiting websites and blocking everything by default. Looking at you google analytics/fonts/etc.)
  • delete cookies on Exit
  • HYTPS only enable
  • add DNS (if not inside my network where it is handled on router level)

Still my favorite browser

Rising5315,

You could try distrosea before committing to an install.

It gives you a VM online to play around in for almost any distro you can think of.

Don’t forget that desktop environment (DE) and distro are decoupled in Linux, so if you didn’t like the feel of Ubuntu (GNOME DE) you can go with Kubuntu (KDE Plasma DE). Both are on DistroSea.

Not OP but: they are apps to schedule automatic downloads. Like Star Trek Strange New Worlds but don't wanna go every week and download it manually? Set it up in Sonarr and when you wake up the new episodes are waiting for you. Radarr is the same for film, prowlarr for aggregating torrent trackers all in 1 spot, bazarr for subtitles, and there's a few others. Can also be set up with usenet in addition to torrents.

Peeko,

My family dropped netflix in Canada as soon as the password sharing change went into effect. I got a radarr + sonarr + jellyfin server all setup and even my parents can very easily find what they want and have it ready to go, they don't miss netflix at all.

All programs should tell you where they store config files (utcc.utoronto.ca)

I wholeheartedly agree with this blog post. I believe someone on here yesterday was asking about config file locations and setting them manually. This is in the same vein. I can't tell you how many times a command line method for discovering the location of a config file would have saved me 30 minutes of googling.

(Windows) Resource Monitor, disk tab, tick the process, see what files it opens and closes.

Also the usual %programdata% and the two %appdata% find most things.
