Reddit has called moderators actions “malicious” and against the wishes of the community members. The numbers tell a different story. These are COMMUNITY protests and marking them otherwise is simply misinformation from reddit staff....
Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. Seems I jumped the gun on this and the restores haven't been intentional - at least not in this particular case....
Someone here already has 12 subs on his own. We would be inspired to avoid the era of the power mods. Moding should involve an interest, not just collecting rings of infinity like it's a gold rush. How can it be a good practice in the long term?...
The problem with supermods is not how much communities/magazines they moderate. The problem is that they see themselves as omnipotent gods with lots of influence, at least on Reddit. One example was awkwardtheturtle, but there are more.
It would be an interesting shot across the bow to corporate controlled social media to show opensource, open access social medias growth. I'm sure its in an exponential phase. It also would seem important to the community to know. Is there a way to query across the fediverse to look at user numbers?
Hi everyone, You may have noticed a small change on the website. From now on, upvotes work just like on Lemmy - they are equivalent to Mastodon's "favourite." You can boost a post using the button that replaced "favourite." Another change is that you can now rate and boost your own posts. Boosting has a one-time effect - it...
Hi everyone, it seems that we have quite a gathering here, and many of you I haven't had the chance to greet yet :) As some of you may know, /kbin is still in its early stages of development. Every day, improvements and new features are being worked on. Unfortunately, this may result in occasional short downtimes. However, the...
As a nitpick about language and terms, I think it's important to recognize that Mastodon and Lemmy, Calckey, Friendica, Akkoma, kbin, PeerTube, PixelFed, etc. are not websites. They're different server types, which come with a web-based front end. These servers run thousands of websites, each of which is its own social networking site.
This is actually an important piece of how the Fediverse fundamentally works. Even if we're not using different server types (Lemmy, Mastodon, etc), we're still largely using different websites.
And while you can install an iFrame or whatnot in a website to serve content from other websites, that's generally not what happens here. Here, you view content on whatever website you've logged into. This means copies of posts are being sent all over the network, and are stored on and hosted from each site that receives them.
What you read is being served from the site you're using. When you post something, that post gets copied to other sites, and other people read those copies.
A common mental model I see people have in the microblogging corner of the Fediverse, following the Twitter migrations, is that "Mastodon" lives out there in a singular place, and people just access it from whatever website they registered on, like it's a mainframe and they're using a terminal to access it. But this is much more like a bunch of independent web forms (or blogs, in the microblog case) where people are actively cross-posting posts and replies, creating copies of discussions.
I saw Jerboa while scrolling through random apps to potentially install, and became excited that finally there's a REDDIT alternative as well, instead of just Twitter. Mastodon might be nice, but I don't use Twitter, and I probably won't use Mastodon, either. Reddit, on the other hand, oh man......
As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …
Because they're both part of the Fediverse, Lemmy and Kbin do federate with each other. You can follow Lemmy "communities" in Kbin, and Kbin "magazines" in Lemmy, and I believe other Fediverse groups (like Frendica groups) also federate.
I've been leaning into this from Kbin, as a way of dipping into communities on Beehaw and other Lemmy instances while keeping my distance from Lemmy's devs.
I have one concern. As we're seeing with Reddit, it's a huge effort to move internet communities. If Lemmy-the-app becomes untenable even for more reasonably admin'd instances, then the most obvious solution won't be to fork Lemmy (a huge undertaking) but rather to move to an app that's maintained by more reasonable people. That's probably going to involve a messy migration, some data loss, some loss of community, and some dead links.
I'll keep using Kbin as a way of tapping into existing communities, but when it comes to building new ones I'd much rather see it done on kbin.social or other Fediverse instances where there's no long-term dependency on Lemmy's devs.
What games would you guys recommend for a guy near 50, who doesn't have a gaming pc (my laptop is an i7, 16gb RAM and using onboard graphics) which tend to have an older community? I used to play RPG's and my least favorite games are those first person war games....

Should we establish a maximum of subs per moderators?
