[Game] Recommendation - Nier: Automata (store.steampowered.com)

This game is the reason why a guy [the legendary u/-YoRHa2B-] started working on dxvk, to make this game compatible on linux after it released. Valve hired him and made Proton out of it. The result is the Steam Deck, this remains one of the best games for the SD.

Ending E, requires the previous four endings to have been seen IIRC

I'd like to know who had the incredibly poor idea to enable this by default. You can't just do something like this without notifying the user!

Disabled it on my device. Samsung's mandatory software updates are already painful, and I have no idea how long this was silently enabled without my knowledge. Good thing I don't fidget with my phone...

It is on the issues tracker but a solution hasn't been decided yet

I think voting has the potential to be very useful but what we want to move away from is the reactionary "I disagree with you / dislike your post, so downvote"

One experiment I would like to see is requiring a reason when downvoting. Factually incorrect, violates this magazine's civility code, trolling, etc. Some reasons might have overlap with the report feature, so a downvote for e.g. illegal content might automatically notify the moderators as well. This might be contingent on a feature that can impose restrictions for abuse of the report feature.

Although it is already relatively easy for anyone to notice when an account is blanket downvoting a thread. In theory, it's already a bit easier for users to sniff out bad actors because they'll either have a clear pattern of misbehavior or a conspicuous lack of account age or participation

If you have a portable AC unit don't forget to clean the air filter(s) before you start using it for the season!

How should I be using Lemmy?

With spez ascending the last few remaining levels of becoming an absolute wanker, it's about time I got more active and I have been wondering how should I be using Lemmy efficiently? Like many I migrated from Reddit and I was primarly using Apollo to browse through my subscribed subreddits....

That's due to a bug where local caches of remote communities are recognized as being under kbin.social instead of the actual domain they're on.

(Not disagreeing that it isn't newbie friendly at all. Just adding context)

Yeah, no idea whether this is spammers trying to stake turf or someone trying to inflate the user count to stick it to reddit (or something) but the numbers from the 18th on are clearly inauthentic.

Looking at some of the protests, I just see it as a final effort to embarrass Reddit. I think they have collectively decided that the only way to inflict actual, financial harm on Reddit is through the IPO or the advertisers.

thus you have some subs surfacing porn to piss off the advertisers, and some subs going private until reddit deciding to break up the mod teams against community consensus potentially damages trust in the website generally to hurt the IPO

I think it will probably have some effectiveness in the medium term, but I also think it could have been more effective if all the protesting subs called reddit's bluff and refused to reopen. The more drastic the action on reddit's part, the more drastic the media attention, IMO.

I may be in the minority here, but it doesn't feel right to me to upvote my own stuff. The vote counters should reflect how others perceive my contributions. It's a given that I agree with my own posts, so that shouldn't be counted.

This is such a weird take. You're sort of conflating gender assignment with gender perception, while sort of denying gender identity exists, while sort of asserting that gender perception should be authoritative (here lies the bigotry, IMO)

Firstly, the half-denial of gender identity existing / gender applying to individuals

I understand that some people don't identify with the gender that has been assigned to them[...]
Unless your intended tone was mocking and there are some heavy use of air quotes that you did not write, you already accept that a person has their own perception of their gender.

Gender is an inherently social construction. Some people have misconstrued this to mean that gender is an individual construction. It is not. How you see yourself is only part what makes you, you. You are also defined by how others see you.
But how others see you is not "gender assignment". How the community sees you is not "gender assignment". It is gender perception.

The purpose of gender assignment is equally for recordkeeping and for practical purposes in early childhood. Gender is typically assigned by the doctor attending to childbirth, and it's done in accordance to biological sex characteristics because as another commenter mentioned, the majority of individuals are cisgender so it's a sensible default. There are some differences in how you might use the bathroom depending on your genitalia, and (for better or for worse) many social norms, like modesty, are imposed/reflected through gender as well. I think parents of a child also have the authority to choose how they present their child's gender to the world, but this is not something to be done trivially or without the child's best interests in mind, e.g. for attention. It's important to note that one's understanding of their own gender identity is something that develops over time, and will develop differently for everyone.

Just because you see yourself a certain way, doesn't mean others will see you that way, and, again we are defined not only by how we perceive ourselves, but how others perceive us.
Not really. It is more accurate to say that the importance of the balance of others' vs. our own perception is itself a spectrum that will be different for everyone and can change fluidly over time. The battle between how much to value each is in fact a core component of many trans experiences.

On gender perception:

How you see yourself is only part what makes you, you. You are also defined by how others see you.
Have you ever heard the expression "we are not our thoughts, we are our reaction to our thoughts?" The simplest way to put it is that mere perception is not enough to be a definition. The only authority on someone's gender identity is that person. Gender expression is a cognitive shortcut. Sometimes gendered expressions are intentional, sometimes not. There are also agender people who place little or no value on gendered expression in general. If you're interacting with someone in good faith and you are genuinely unsure how you should refer to them, it takes no time at all to simply ask if they have preferred pronouns. It should go without saying that it's not your business to dispute anyone's gender identity, whether they're strangers or otherwise. You are free to think however you want, the problem is expressing those thoughts in ways that cause harm. Like, just don't be a dick?

I generally like the guy but some folks commenting on his videos about this situation are pretty wild, to put it mildly. Dear lord.

subignition,

It will be an interesting time for sure. I hope it can work out in a way that skilled moderators can be compensated for their efforts. It seems like donation-supported instances for niche communities isn't too unrealistic right now, though that doesn't solve the volunteer labor problem. Cleverer things will probably become possible as the technology improves.

subignition,
subignition avatar

Well it's certainly a question of scale. I've seen some successful indie projects where the hosting costs are met by donations, but that's usually when the admin/dev(s) are donating their labor. I struggle to imagine a community that could crowdfund enough for a few reasonable salaries on top of hosting costs.

Though my imagination isn't particularly strong, so I would be delighted if such a thing came to be!

subignition,
subignition avatar

The information won't necessarily be lost, because most/all? the instances that were previously federated with the shut-down instance should have cached copies of its activity. Not sure on what scale, or how far back, content caching will be, but I imagine admins have (or should have) the ability to configure that sort of thing

Now, from the perspective of a user looking to migrate to a new platform, not being able to "take it with you" is a valid concern. Mastodon seems to have account export nailed down, but lemmy/kbin are still pretty new and might need time to implement something like this

I don't understand how the quantum dish detergent is different from the not-quantum dish detergent

subignition,
subignition avatar

@mcc Usually there's some subtle difference if you inspect the active ingredients on the package, but the only thing I can say at a glance is that the top one is 35/618g = 17.65g/unit and the bottom is 45/540g = 12g/unit

So there is a difference in mass of about 25%. Does that mean the Quantum ones are more powerful chemicals and therefore lighter? The world may never know.

It is not possible to delete a subreddit once it's been created.

What will be done about the ghost beehaw communities? (beehaw.org)

If you don't know Beehaw.org defederated from us but communities from there that have a copy on this instance are still visible to Us and we can post on them, they can't see what we post or comment on those, and we can't see what they post and comment over there....

subignition,
subignition avatar

All platforms could benefit from one or two things here: a big clear notification when viewing cached content from a defederated instance, to inform the user, and optionally, the inability to interact with local copies of content while the instance remains defederated

Lols, to kbinMeta

Is there an option to move the magazine description to the top of the page, so i finite scrolling doesnt continuously push the unsubscribe or subscribe buttons further and further down? if not, could this be implemented as an option?

subignition,
subignition avatar

@Lols The magazine description etc. seems to be a sidebar if your window width is high enough. Not saying your problem is invalid, ofc, but it may only be an issue on mobile web. Edit: removed imgur link, the upload to kbin did work after all

Cat, to RedditMigration
Cat avatar

I must suck at searching. What is the "Boost" feature in kbin?

subignition,
subignition avatar

@Cat It's the equivalent of a retweet (from Mastodon's point of view it is), boosting shares it to your own profile

subignition,
subignition avatar

I think they are trying to convince themselves that there is some hundreds of millions of revenue they're missing out on, with the whole "it's valuable to train language models" argument.

OC I ask everyone here to modmail large subreddits about kbin

I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....

subignition,
subignition avatar

I feel like this would be much easier if instances had a reasonably accurate way of estimating and self-reporting their own capacity/usage. Like a color-graded bar in the header that you could glance at to understand "Oh, this place is pretty full, maybe I should look elsewhere"

I'm not sure if that's even feasible though. And of course it will take time, Kbin is still extremely new.

“In the current understanding of what happens when a virus enters the brain, there are two outcomes – either cell death or inflammation,” Dr. Martinez-Marmol said.
“But we’ve shown a third possible outcome, which is neuronal fusion.”

It sounds like this mechanism was known in other tissues, but had previously been thought impossible in the brain. An exciting discovery.
