i honestly do not care about having the option to pay for things
i consider the quality of a platform as if monetised features dont exist, and discord is still a pretty solid platform besides them
if they start monetising existing features, sure, that effectively removes features, but until then getting mad at things that simply do not affect me is silly
the guy famous for his non-profit organisation* asking for donations and losing money on his projects is an extremely weird thing to have an issue with
If you are a white leftist and you talk “both parties are the same they are both capitalist” you will loose most of your black audience. I think it ought to be obvious that this isn’t because blackfolks love Democrats (in most cases, there is always someone being simple in any group) —no. it’s because the difference between the parties is material and obvious and these are unstable times.
When I hear such talk I wonder if the speaker is working on voter suppression.
I'm just trying to understand. Erdogan in Turkey, Putin in Russia, Orban in Hungary etc... Why do these leaders still get so much support after all they've done?...
more often than not, authoritarian leadership coincides with a strong chokehold on local media and strong dismissal or even attempts to completely bar entry of foreign media
think the great firewall, or local newsstation, being subsidiaries of fox, reading the exact same statements from a script across the USA
is it possible to mute instances or communities as opposed to straight up blocking them? making sure they dont show up on your /all/ page but not removing the ability to view any and all new content when its linked via different community...
Is there an option to move the magazine description to the top of the page, so i finite scrolling doesnt continuously push the unsubscribe or subscribe buttons further and further down? if not, could this be implemented as an option?
the issue with this view is that it assumes the toxicity is 1. active, targeted trolling and 2. something that the people in question are willing to put significant effort into
the majority of the time toxicity doesnt flow in due to any active effort to be toxic, "brigading" is in reality usually just folks flowing in from /all/
Maybe something that is not understood by new lemmings, at least me, is that when we join communities in other instances we may find ourselves blocked from accessing them (without creating another account) in the future....
the level of users is hopefully permanent, but the lack of moderation to adequately deal with it, both from beehaw and lemmy.world, is not
its also a cultural problem, at the moment the culture of the fediverse is still settling and folks are poking and prodding and seeing how much they can get away with
thats pretty unfair, theres no reason to think that they intend on cutting themselves off from the fednet entirely
according to them this is a temporary measure until they have better tools for moderation, more mods or until things have calmed down a bit, I dont see any reason to question that
I wish I wasn't allergic. (files.catbox.moe)
Discord is opening the monetization floodgates: get ready for microtransaction stores and paid 'exclusive memes' (www.pcgamer.com)
Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, is working on a Reddit alternative called Trust Cafe. Registration is open! (twitter.com)
After spending a few minutes, it seems like a mix of mastodon/twitter/reddit. I don't think it'll take the place of lemmy/kbin
Why do people keep voting for authoritarian leaders?

Long post about lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml
Wrote this as a comment, but was too long. Feel free to disagree....
Choosing which instance of a community to join

Why lemmy.world should not defederate from beehaw.org.
What defederating would mean:...
How can I block all Lemmygrad content? As a user can I block an instance? Are there instances that already block them?
Yes, so I want to browse all but actually control the content, block instances, block keywords, etc... currently using Jerboa, but not married to it.
