Yeah, to get regular folks (like, even the nerdy ones for the most part) you have to just drop the jargon entirely. It’s social media / community building, don’t talk about it like a grad school coding project.
Finally! The generations are so sloppily and arbitrarily defined anyway. Yeah, there’s a difference between me at almost 40 and someone in college. There are some things I had more in common with “Gen-X” and some that I had more in common with “millennials,” but then they’d try to define my group as if they were a separate thing on the cusp between the two. Misses the point entirely, there may be tendencies based on age group but everyone’s somewhere on a spectrum of all that stuff.
There are people same age as me that I feel like I share more in common with toddlers (or alternately, geriatrics) than them despite that age similarity.
Not 100% on this either, but on the magazine settings it has options to include all posts from a tag, so in theory tags can be used to post to multiple magazines if the magazines are set to receive those tags. I haven’t seen this working yet but also haven’t tried to make it work.
I’ve set up a couple magazines to use this feature so I’m hoping they’ll start auto-populating with content from Fediverse maybe. Will see.

USA has been treated by Europeans (probably mostly just US Citizens that WISH they were european actually) as though they respect their citizens and civil rights to some fairy tail degree
It’s like… no bitch they just have better healthcare and are friendlier to bicyclists, these European countries are just as shitty about almost everything else.
Not trying to start a fight with any citizens of Europe - just always funny how people have this idea that the USA is the only corrupt western government and are so shocked to see that it’s kinda the same everywhere.
I eat popcorn fairly often and I was wondering if I can improve on the taste with minimal effort. Do you guys know any good mix I could use instead of salt alone?
Some dashes of hot sauce can be nice. Doesn’t usually make it too soggy as long as you’re not to wild in the streets with it.
Popcorn is super flexible, if there’s a flavor you like there’s a good chance you’ll like it on popcorn… just have to watch out for texture. You want to add a little moisture but not make it wet, beyond that… you are the artist and the popcorn is your palette 🎨
Seems like a good portion of the activity in the communities is reddit oriented. If the goal is leaving/hurting reddit, it seems we should be continuing on like it doesn't exist, instead of continuing to drive interest to the site. Thoughts?
I say we go a step further and make sure to at least mention Reddit in EVERY post so the web indexers start bringing up these threads when people search “blah blah blah reddit” because Google is terrible without adding reddit to the end of a search string.
r/pics, gifs, among others are voting on whether to return to normal operation. As lots of people supporting the black out aren't using Reddit at the moment the voting is currently going in favour of returning to normal
This has been consensus across most of Reddit. Most people don’t care, and won’t care. So, those of us that do just need to be here making the best of it and not worrying about Reddit. Once there is comparable amounts of content in the Fediverse, people will end up joining for the same reason they joined Reddit.
I initially signed up for Reddit after I kept getting sent links to Reddit. It was just a place that had information I was interested in.
Right now, telling people to join because it will eventually be good and it’s ethically good doesn’t work because there’s not much here and most people are fine using commercial software.
However once there is a wealth of information here, say someone publishes a very good guide for self-hosting and you have a friend that wants to self-host a Plex server, you link them to a lemmy or kbin guide. They will naturally be compelled to join and ask questions if they have them.
It takes time. Just let those of us that are ideologically driven create content good enough that everyone else ends up coming for their own reasons.
Honestly I’m basing that opinion on two subs… cigars, where I wasn’t at all surprised because most cigar guys are conservative leaning and likely to see this as a bunch of bullshit, and ethfinance, which honestly you would think would have more consensus based on the whole decentralization thing. Surprised to see some subs very supporting, like /r/MMA is here in force.
Just got 15 of these in a multi-shape pack for the cheap at cigarpage.com - not sure which I prefer between these and the Serie V but I do appreciate that I can always get these on the cheap thanks to the internet.
It’s a good smoke, not a lot of sweetness compared to the Serie V which just can be like a chocolate bar at times. The MB3 is less sweet and more nutty maybe.
Oliva has been my main brand so far because they’re good and I can afford them, looking forward to continuing to enjoy them.
What we're really lacking on the ui end is a way to see groups of identical communities that are on different federated platforms. Hence the idea of a dom-lemmy. The way it would work is lets say you search for a cat community called "cats", there's at least dozens of them out there already. Instead it would return the cats...

Exactly... occasionally when I'm trying to research something and I've exhausted the information available on google / reddit I'll go to twitter to try to search for something... and 90% of what you can find there is just spam. I used to subscribe to a bunch of comedians and journalists and it served as a nice news / joke feed but things really took a dive after 2016 and made the whole platform horrible to use.
I feel like Kbin's combination of mastodon and a reddit-like community system could solve a lot of problems with both reddit and twitter.
Loving it - federation is great, hardly ever even know which instance I'm interacting with from kbin, which is a good thing as it means the federation is working and mostly seamless. Can't wait for some apps to come out and streamline the experience, hopefully some more people will start coming here to populate a lot of the communities that I'd like to participate or lurk in. Right now there's a lot of... uh... shouting into the void trying to fill the space. I'm posting way more than I ever did on reddit just because like... somebody has to do it, right?
