Unpopular opinion, but the GCN controller is so comfy, the bumpers fit so well in my fingers

CuriousALot,

How Is this unpopular ?!
I was a Ps guy at the time, but my friend had the GC. As soon as I tried the controller I felt in love with it. To this day I still think that GC controller is the most ergonomic controller I've ever held.

I have to agree, in terms of ergonomics I find the GCN controller to be the best

The ABXY layout was really nice. With the modern standard, there is often some mix up as to which button is “accept” and which is “cancel”. The GameCube controller, with its big Mashable A button left nothing to interpretation. The X and Y buttons were comfortably placed as well.

Oh lord yes the GameCube controller is pure sex. Only way to play smash :) Amongst all other attributes people have mentioned, love the walls of the analog stick, it feels so much better not having a smooth smooshy full globe of movement, I want to smash that shit in a direction and feel hard contact

Badabinski,

I loved my Wavebird. It was so comfortable, and the wireless worked really well. It was a bit chunky, but I didn't care.

Unpopular? That’s crazy talk!

can, (edited )

I mean, what other controller could you buy new almost twenty years later?

It’s so true for me that I have Gamecube controllers for Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Recently I bought a Joycon-like that mimics the GC controller. It’s awesome!

Definitely not "unpopular". I agree 100%; GCN controller has been the best for a good 22+ years, somehow.

Beat me to it. Modern controllers are fine, but the art of controller design peaked with the GameCube.

Everyone in this thread gets an upvote. It wasn't until a few years ago when I soft modded my Wii to start playing GameCube games that I held the controller again. Damn! That is such a comfortable controller. It's still my favourite of all of them.

experiencersinternational,

@s804 Wii U GamePad.

It's comfortable. It has motion controls, NFC and IR. The only thing that sucks is the battery life, but then again DS4 and DS5 battery life is shit as well.

Lippy,
Lippy avatar

It looks so bulky and unwieldy, and at first glance it seems like it takes some getting used to with the analog sticks being at the top.

But I'll agree as a Wii U owner that the thing is just so comfortable to use. It's much lighter than it looks too, and I was able to adapt to the analog stick placement immediately, as if I had always been using it.

Speaking of the battery, mine barely holds a charge anymore. I wouldn't mind doing something about that.

experiencersinternational,

@Lippy @s804 thankfully it is user replaceable.

Mine is alrightish, it still lasts a few hours if it gets fully charged, and I don't have the higher capacity battery installed

For me my Switch Pro Controller and Xbox. Guess it's mode about the layout for me. I really don't like the Playstation layout especially for the sticks. That one causes my hand to just hurt.

DeGandalf,

I have both the Switch Pro Controller and Xbox one (for my PC), but I prefer the Switch Controller by far, because the buttons feel so much smoother. But on the other hand it doesn't have triggers, so for racing games it isn't that good (Not that the switch had any realistic ones, which I couldn't play on PC).

OctoFloofy,

My Switch pro controller is actually my only one. Only had experience with the Xbox controller cause my parents have a Xbox at their home.

spriteblood,

I also prefer the asymmetrical stick layout. The King Kong Pro 2 is probably my favorite controller at the moment. It feels almost identical to a Series X controller, but with gyro, hall sensor sticks, and other features. Which is great because Xbox controllers are the most comfortable to me, but all the fancy features other controllers offer make it a little behind the curve.

If they ever add gyro controls to Xbox, that will likely be my favorite.

Wii mote + mario kart wheel for sure

primbin,

I still use a dualshock 3, but I can settle for a dualshock 4. They're comfortable to hold, and the bumpers are easy to press, unlike clicky ass xbox bumpers.

NotSteve_,

Have you tried DualSense controllers? What do you think of them?

primbin,

I haven't, I'm gonna keep using my dualshock 3 until it dies on me. When it does, I'll try dualsense out.

ThisIsMyNewAccount,

Xbox Series controllers are the best controllers ever. The clicky bumpers and d pad are a feature!

parrot-party,

I would never accuse Xbox controllers of having a decent dpad. Functional, yes, but I've never struggled with a dpad more than an with an Xbox one. I literally didn't use the quick select feature in Fallout 3 because it was so inaccurate that opening the pipboy would allow me to select faster.

As to the rest of the Xbox controller? Yes, it's my preferred layout.

captdust,

@parrot@kbin.social @s804 @primbin @ThisIsMyNewAccount MS finally got a working dpad on the series x controllers though, hands down my all time favorite controller now

ThisIsMyNewAccount,

Agreed. Pre-Series controllers the d pad was pretty garbage. But with the new ones they’re basically perfect. For that style of dpad, anyway.

Not sure how to insert images on my post haha. my favorite controller is the steering wheel on wii playing racing games like NFS carbon and a monster truck game!

Im28xwa,

The Xbox One/series controller because:

  1. it feels so comfortable to hold it fills my hand perfectly partially thanks to its size unlike the PS controller this one doesn’t feel so small and thin in my hand
  2. It feels like a one piece rather than multiple pieces glued together
  3. the perfect position of the left joystick, this is the correct position
Streamer,

8bitdo controllers are my favs for now, but I also loved the Nintendo 64 controller, but probably mostly because I was a kid and loved games.

Sabakodgo,

Joy-Con! I enjoy having my hands free. It might be from using my Oculus so much, but it feels the greatest.

PulsarSkate,

Honestly the Xbox S/360/One/Series controller still does it for me. There's been relatively incremental changes since, which is good as it just works for me.

The DualSense gets close for me, thanks to the prongs feeling wider than any of the dualshock iterations, which have felt too small since my mid teens. But the flattened end on it stops it abruptly in a way that leaves me still preferring the xbox.

The switch pro controller sort of imitates the xbox controller, but at least on both I've owned the build quality doesn't match Sony/MS

@violet_cerue@toot.garden avatar

PS2 and gamecube controllers were ones i felt most comfortable using because of the little grippy things you can hold. one of the best things the console side of the games industry did was make little grippy things the standard for traditional controllers. i also put a lot of use into the wii classic controller pro whenever those games gave me the option.

i really love the SNES controller in part because of childhood memories but it also felt nice to use from what i remember.

Acala,

I have big hands so I'd have to go with the Xbox 360 and Xbox One's controller. The DualSense is very good, too. I'd give it to the DualSense for the haptic feedback and vibrations, but they're both great!

The WiiU pro controller is absolutely my favorite controller of all time, symmetrical stick placement above the buttons, slim and lightweight yet durable, and an absurd battery life between 60-80 hours.
After that, my next favorite as far as traditional controllers would be the PS2 controller. For non-traditional I have a huge soft spot for the WiiU gamepad and the Wii remote + nunchuk.
The worst controller I've ever used would easily be the N64 controller, followed at a wide margin by the Saturn 3D control pad. I'm also not fond of 360 controller.

Tamlyn,

I always use playstation controller and i'm completly fine with that. other always feel kind of weird. Don't know if that is my habit or if i like them the most. But to be fair ps1-ps3 controller are not that good. I like the DS4 but as now i'm use to dual sense.
