Hey… thanks, brother

Been working through a small order of these, these are mid-priced (for me) cigars that hit most of the notes I like. I’m still not the best at identifying flavors but it fits a standard Don Pepin profile, I’m also a big fan of the Tatuaje cigars and really just all his cigars are a little spicy and leave me thinking “Oh boy, I sure do enjoy smoking cigars.”

It truly has been a great change of pace in my life since I started enjoying tobacco again. After I quit smoking cigarettes and went nicotine abstinent for two years I just saw my porch and thought about how boring it would be out there without a cigarette. Cigarettes felt like an annoying compulsive habit. One or two cigars a day and I’m right as rain, sitting outside enjoying the atmosphere and a much more satisfying smoking experience. Cigs don’t even smell or taste good.

I’d say it tastes like it looks. Dark brown. Rich. Woody, leather. Just pleasant all the way. No complaints.

These Cain cigars really are a great value. Always on sale, a comfortable length and gauge, and they generally draw and burn pretty well. They’re strong, and I enjoy a strong cigar.

Since Holts always teases you with a four pack sampler at checkout that I always forget I bought I generally have one or two of these around and they generally hit the spot. This in particular, the Daytona, is a little lighter on the flavor profile but still has that nicotine spice on the nose and palate.

Usually consume with alcohol as I find it a good companion for the nicotine burn. A flavorful pale ale (or an IPA) like this Dale’s is great.

This album was a frequent listen for me when I was in high school, every once in a while I go back to it and it still holds up.

Was just thinking about this game the other day. It was super fun and had a more interesting / entertaining vibe than other vehicle combat games (Twisted Metal, not sure what else)

I was all over that and Carmageddon, which also doesn’t have a very good modern equivalent.

With the abundance of retro platformers I still think this is a niche worth revisiting

Would love Earthworm Jim or MDK reboots but I think those are under Infogrames / Interplay not Activision?

Still waiting on my fresh box of “cheap morning favorite” cigars (broken record: Tatuaje Series P or Aganorsa New Leaf Corojo) had to dip into the Industry Killers again. Every time I light one up Im’m pretty taken aback by how good these cigars are.

Flavor and strength are there but not overpowering. Nuts and mild spice, burns perfect for the most part with only mild corrections ever needed. Long ash, perfect draw, and I appreciate the cost savings from coming in bundles without and bands or anything.

What I don’t like, but understand, is that they are only available from one place online because it’s supposed to just be a shop cigar for Sanj’s shop. Shouldismoke this is a kind of antiquated and difficult website to browse. Also it’s a toro which I am generally not trying to spend that kind of time with my daily casual cigar. They’re cheap enough at $7 (for the Deluxe, a dollar less for the regular) but “in this economy” that’s still at the top of my range. There is a lancero coming out and I would LOVE if I could have them in a short Robusto or another 30-40 minute shape.

Those are minor complaints for a delicious and affordable cigar, and once I’m busy working again I’ll probably keep a stash of the Toro for nighttime hangs and Lancero for coffee time assuming they’re as good as I expect that will be.

Took me a rough winter of self-tamed ducks before I figured out auto-slaughter, I only had low skilled folks… all they could do was chop wood, kill ducks, oil, get food poisoning and wait.

Goin on like 30-something years with Battletoads now

Wild. If I had to say which game is harder between Battletoads and Elden Ring, I’d say Battletoads hands down. I’ve gotten pretty far, but never beat it on NES. I guess I could go the emulator route just so I don’t get that awful feeling every time I see the cartridge, some amount of closure.

What are your favorite hobbies or time killers?

I just graduated optometry school and I feel like I’ve lost a bit of my identity. I didn’t have much free time to focus on the things that make me happy and now I’m lacking inspiration. I can’t work until my license is approved so I’ve had days of doing nothing since May 7. It’s been great but it’s starting to get...

Similar situation - I’d been at a job for about 10 years that robbed me of all of my time, but didn’t pay me enough to comfortably stay home or take vacations.

I went freelance but current events happened and now I’m home a lot. I beat Elden Ring. I put like 100 hours into Rimworld. Gaming can get super depressing in a concentrated binge, so what I also have done:

  1. Backpacking. Nerd out on gear for a week or so, go to REI and drop some money, and go walk for days at a time. I love it. Most recently just did a 15 mile out, sleep, 15 mile back trip and it definitely was good on my brain (rough on my body)

  2. DIY tech projects. I had a couple raspberry pis around. One is now a synth / sequencer / workstation with a midi keyboard using the Zynthian OS and the other is going to do some self-hosting.

  3. Fixing my furnace. This one isn’t one I recommend.

  4. Cigars for me, but any kind of highly indulgent consumable that people like to talk about. Chocolate, wine, cheese, etc.

  5. Exploring. You’d be amazed what you can find just walking around. A friend just showed me a crazy underground stream that I’ve been walking over for YEARS now and I had no idea it existed. Going to go check it out.

  6. Plants and Birds. I have a front porch. My days of nothing to do usually start with about an hour or so on the porch with a cigar, watching and trying to identify the birds that come to my feeder and admiring the progress of my plants that are growing out there.

This is one of those things where every time I start thinking about it I just... stop thinking about it and remember to keep an eye on what my son is up to on the internet.

Pro-Tip: Decent Deal at Holts Right Now / Build Your Own Sampler (www.holts.com)

Not trying to spam, I have no affiliation with any particular vendor or brand. Needed a re-up on my ~$5 per stick stash so I could keep my hands off my Padrons and Casdaglis - this thing running at Holts is a pretty good deal where you can pick your own components to a sampler....

I’m on both (repeatedly, multiple servers and accounts) but even with Memmy I find myself gravitating towards Kbin and once Artemis is out I’ll probably stay there. Beehaw has the best interaction on its local communities, but Kbin is just a better feed for me mostly. No brand or server loyalty for me, I will continue using all until one seems to address all my wants.

thanksbrother,
thanksbrother avatar

Yeah... it is a little overwhelming when just dipping your toes. In the initial push to get off of reddit I ended up with a lot of accounts... Beehaw, sh.itjust.works, fedia.io, kbin.social, readit.buzz, infosec.exchange, infosec.town, defcon.social, tildes, squabbles, etc. At some point you just have to use something.

If I had to guess what I'll be doing in the future, I'd say it will resemble reddit where I had multiple accounts for different purposes but not different platforms, just different content filters and topics. Eventually there will be at least one app that works with both Lemmy and Kbin accounts and make it all more or less seemless and arbitrary.

Right now I'm primarily using Kbin and Beehaw, I don't know which account will eventually be more important to me. I'm also using Ice Cubes for Mastodon with a couple different Mastodon accounts. What would push me all-in on a kbin instance would be if I federation between Lemmy instances and mastodon instances reached a level of functioning that didn't feel like I was missing anything. I'd rather not have a million different apps and accounts just to see different versions of the same shit.

thanksbrother,
thanksbrother avatar

Yeah, Artemis is an app for Kbin that is in a very limited beta right now (I'm not in it) - *edit got the link wrong the first time **and the second time. Artemis

Agreed across the board. Good friends of mine that would ideologically align on most issues could not give less of a shit about any of this.

NFTs are a joke to almost everybody, Crypto is just FTX and/or a pyramid scheme to them and a source of some of the most annoying people on Twitter. There is no value in any of this for anybody but the most stubbornly ideological / anti-bank nerds. When it was easy money, it pulled in some normies. Now nobody cares. People are happy to use threads, Instagram, Facebook, Wells Fargo, etc. and I’m not arguing with any of them.

These look so nice! Even the box presentation. Need work to pick up so I can spread my wings and adventure out a bit more. Re-stocked my budget guys today but I’d love a box of these or I’ve also been looking at the Papas Fritas.
