tjhart85, to kbin in where are kbin admins?
tjhart85 avatar

The initial split largely seemed to be that people were submitting code fixes and Ernest wasn't accepting them or updating /KBin fast enough for them. The lack of API that was already done and approved by Ernest and ready to go (that to my knowledge still hasn't been implemented on KBin!) seemed to have been the last straw that got them traction.

Ernest doesn't want to band aid fixes, he wants to fix the underlying problems and eliminate the "tech debt" he's already accumulated rather than letting it continue to pile on to the point that fixing anything becomes unmanageable due to all the band aids. This is GOOD, but it means everything will be much slower. MBin is just pedal to the metal and literally accepting any bit of code at all, which also isn't really sustainable for a product that people want to use.

At this point, I dunno though, Ernest has been gone for a month and the site has been super slow and blips up and down all the time. I REALLY hope he's ok, but I'm not sure of the long term viability of /KBin anymore and am wondering what if the next blip just doesn't get resolved???

I agree on the MBin bros thing, 100%. Their attitude has really made me not want to even consider their project at all. I don't like the tankie devs on the Lemmy side of things, but, at the same time don't really think that matters all that much. If they do something bad, people can break off and spin off like MBin did.

To me, ideal world, enough people donate that Ernest can pay himself to work on it full time and maybe hire an extra FT dev (Nabu Casa hires like 30 devs to work on Home Assistant without taking in any VC debt or 3rd party money, so, it's at least feasible, but they built up 5ish years of goodwill before they spun up Nabu Casa and people were still initially skeptical), but that's not going to be possible if he disappears constantly so it's a catch-22.

Seriously though, I really hope he's ok and this hasn't been because something happened to him. It's really ominous that his last communication indicated he had surgery coming up and then complete radio silence

Gab is actually a Mastodon instance, so you can directly see what people in the Fediverse can/will do to fringe content ... defederate

The problem is that outside of tankies, the far left basically wants people taken care of and treated like people and the far right wants certain types of people to not exist (how they want the not exist part to happen is up for some debate amongst the right, but, they still need to be gone and gone quickly)

In a practical sense, you cannot really compare the two.

Yes, there are whackjobs on the left too, but they're not taken seriously by anyone and not getting prime time TV coverage of their runs for office.

If we get away from practicalities and talk pure theory, then I guess other arguments can be made, but if we're restricting ourselves to the things as they are now with labels as they're typically used, the far right is barren as far as intellectualism goes.

From my perspective, I've basically left Reddit. Hypothetically, I 100% agree with you, but from a practical standpoint, I don't really care what happens over there.

KBin is the only site that knows your KBin password, so you won't be able to use it directly to log in elsewhere.

Easiest would be to anonymously visit the other sites and then do a search and subscribe on KBin for the subs you like to bring them into your feed.

I did that to bring my Mastadon stuff in to see if I can use KBin as a pane of glass to see everything or I'm better off just keeping them separate (juries still out, probably need to wait until this server stops getting slammed).

ETA: if someone knows a better way, please correct me! I would love to learn an easier way. So far, I think it's just manual checking and people making lists that they share.

tjhart85 avatar

This scene for me (you can skip to 1:20 or so) showed that it's at least feasible, but it definitely takes a lot more than glasses, which is where many of the non Christopher Reeve's portrayals fall flat. They always play Superman in both roles but it's just Superman with glasses.

Christopher Reeve on the other hand showed that Clark Kent is the perfect disguise when portrayed correctly and it's at least understandable that especially the people that know Clark would never suspect for a second that he's Superman because they've never seen anything but a quiet, weak and easily frightened man who is nothing like Superman at all! Superman is also way taller!

Watching him stand up straight and put some confidence on his face, voice and transform into Superman over the course of 10ish seconds was one thing, but watching him deflate back into Kent in under 2 seconds was another altogether! That shift was jarring for me and showed just how good the disguise was and how good of an actor Reeve was.

tjhart85, to unpopularopinion in If you're making software for actual end-users, you HAVE to give it a goddamn GUI, or else you suck, your software sucks, and nobody is going to use your damn software.
tjhart85 avatar

Conversely, I think that every program should have a way to operate it from the command line and the GUI can just needlessly get in the way a lot of the time `¯_(ツ)_/¯
You write a command once and you can do whatever you want with it, repeatably, forever. It's fantastic! You can then pipe the results into a completely different program all without needing to do much of anything! Want to run it on a schedule? Easy! Want to send the exact parameters you used to someone else? Easy! Want to copy and paste the exact output? Easy! Want to get a daily email with the results? Easy!
Some things are better with a GUI, but, plenty don't need it.
With all that said, I understand why a dev who didn't build their program with CLI in mind wouldn't want to go in afterwards and add it in, especially if they don't use/like CLI interfaces.

I've seen similar arguments to yours that every program should have be packaged as an exe, because fuck those fucking programmers thinking I should need to install python to make their shitty programs work. The devs are like "I don't use Windows and wouldn't even know how to package it as an exe and even then, I wouldn't even be able to test that it works, python just works for everyone" and then the guy just continues to go off on a similar rant to yours about how ridiculous this is.

Besides, even if it had a GUI, the complaint would be "why don't they make their software do the things that people want it to do‽‽‽" and then going off about how easy this {insanely complicated thing} would be to add in and EVERYONE {nope, just you} needs this function in order for this software to be useful and the dev is just a POS for not adding it.

Like, I get your point if you're paying for software that doesn't make it clear it doesn't have a GUI, but if you're just on github using someone elses software that they made for themselves and thought other people might like, why are you bitching? Just move on to another piece of software that can do what you want and has a GUI (I'm going to guess you can't/won't because those cost money and you wouldn't be able to belittle and harass the actual software creators and that's half the fun for you).

OP, it's not 'money is no object' because it's actually pretty cheap, but it's actually very easy to flash and install, so, if I were to do it again, I'd probably choose the same hardware since it went pretty smoothly.

Same, mines like a $40 one from a few years back on black friday. Does it do a great job? No, each individual run is objectively not good and it misses some stuff, but over the course of a week it averages out to pretty freaking great and all I've gotta do is empty its bin when I get home from work at least once or twice. 10/10, would recommend and seeing the amount of cat hair its picked up is pretty disgusting.

tjhart85, to news in Alabama Mayor Kills Self After Right-Wing Blog Outs His Cross-Dressing
tjhart85 avatar

By no means am I an expert, especially on the intricacies of being trans and I don't want to cis-splain their experiences, but I do know that cross dressing has an overlap of necessity with them, but it's a ven-diagram/intersection rather than a circle.

People who are trans typically explain it as having always felt like they've always been in the wrong gendered-body. Wearing clothes that correspond to the gender they feel they are
(also, keep in mind MRI's have shown brain activity that more closely matches the gender they feel they are than the gender they were born with, as well) is way for them to try and reconcile the way they feel with the way they were born. It's usually an early stage in socially transitioning, whether they later choose to chemically/medically transition or not (and keep in mind, this is not always the end goal for people ... simply being acknowledged as the way they see themselves is enough for some people and they shouldn't be afraid to be in public because of that!).

People who cross dress on the other hand may be doing it because they're trans and feeling out the early stages OR ... just because. It could be the way a textile feels, it could be sexual, it could be non-sexual, it could be because they just like it, it could be because ... you see where I'm going with this? There are as many reasons that people cross dress as there t-shirt designs (I may be exaggerating a bit with that one, but you get my meaning, I think).

I know NOFX is problematic, but I feel like "I’m a Transvest‐Lite" explains it decently (for one particular person anyways!):

I'm not transgender, I'm a lazy crossdresser
Who thinks makeup is too much of an ordeal
I paint my toes and wear shiny tight clothes
Not for the look, but how it makes me feel
I don't need things just right, I'm a tranvest-lite
I only shave to do the Time Warp midnight Saturday
I'm done with self-pity, I don't have to feel shitty
'Cause I wanna look pretty, so I give it the old city College try
Don't get me wrong, I still wanna be a guy
Who sometimes likes to dress like a girl
(He sometimes likes to wear diamonds and pearls)
Don't think I don't know I'm not fooling anyone
(He's a cross between Adele and Charlie Chaplin)
You gotta know it's not just girls who just wanna have fun!

Also, the beginning of the song is about the shame felt early on about it and is generally about getting the courage to not give a flying fuck about what people think.

Hopefully I did a decent enough explanation without trampling on anyones lived experiences. The simple truth is that both groups of people have completely individualized experiences and it's a different journey for every single person.

tjhart85, to kbinMeta in Why do we need approval to delete our accounts?

The mechanism to delete your account isn't yet working and Ernest needs to manually do a bunch of stuff to make it happen, so it's not so much an "approval" as it is a notification to Ernest that he needs to do something.

API stuff is listed in the 'merged pull requests' section (quite a few times), so unless I'm mis-interpreting what that means, I think the API should be going live as long as this downtime is for the updating of the instance!

This will help a LOT with people seeing /kbin as an option ... the mobile webpage is pretty fantastic, but I'm really looking forward to switching to the Artemis App as my daily driver.

tjhart85, to stallmanwasright in Philips Hue will force users to upload their data to Hue cloud
tjhart85 avatar

It's scary because there is an incredible amount of data that can be gained just by knowing when your lights are turning on and off (when people leave/return for the day and when they're on vacation are examples). Combine that with information on what IP Address the app is reporting from and you may be able to get a decent bit of location data even without officially querying for location.

Without an account, potentially having this information is bad enough but mandating an account and then having it tied to your email address is worse (since most people aren't going to make a per-service address).

Right now, my Hue hub is prevented from accessing the Internet and everything using the local API works without issue, except the app is trying to force a TOS agreement and without agreeing I cant do anything with the official app (add/remove devices, adjust on/off state, adjust brightness, etc...). Home Assistant control works, so, my lights still come on automatically based on my motion sensors and my light switches through HA will still turn them on and off and adjust brightness and all that ... If I were relying on the official app though, I'd have no choice but to agree to their TOS or would now have to take all the bulbs out.

This really sucks because I paid a shit ton for these bulbs vs their competitors because I liked that they allowed local control natively without needing to mess around with anything to get it to work and had a quality product ... Had I known this would happen I definitely would not have paid the hefty surcharge I did and would have gone with a competing product.
