Similar here. Our new Sony came with Google TV, but it turns out you can set it up in "basic TV" mode which is nice for this: it strips away the clutter and leaves you with what's effectively a dumb TV. I can still install firmware updates via a thumb drive.

We have https://kbin.social/m/mechanicalkeyboards on kbin.

If you're on a Lemmy instance then the best way to add it is to paste the full URL into search while logged in. It won't show up right away, but if you wait a few seconds then it'll appear in the search results. Every now and then it gets stubborn and you have to refresh the search results page to see it.

threadiverse

I like this. I keep seeing and saying "Lemmy/Kbin" which is awkward in all sorts of ways.

"Threadiverse" has a good denim feel to it.

What are some great communities to follow that are not on lemmy.ml or beehaw

The way Lemmy works right now is you search a community in your instance for it to then get shown, so you need to first discover that community from elsewhere. With that in mind, what are some growing communities that you discovered that could get some more love?

You can! To subscribe to something on another instance just go to the general search and type <community name>@<hostname>

For example here's a search for ffxiv@possumpat.io

I agree with your parenthetical strongly enough to rule out a typo.

This announcement lists things that Reddit will humor, for now, and as a way of cheaply outsourcing niche and difficult problems. It clarifies that everyday third party apps were never intended to have a future with the platform. They're simply an obstacle for Reddit's most convincing path to revenue.

I might even have forgiven Reddit if it had said so up front, but the story they've been trying to spin – with prices that just happen to be orders of magnitude in excess of anything devs might afford – is outrageously insulting. I've never had my trust in a brand demolished so thoroughly so quickly.

I have a PARA structure in DEVONthink, though it's mostly "Resources" for interesting web articles.

It's getting hard to find old articles in search engines (even DDG), so if I see something interesting then I add it to Pocket. DEVONthink then reads my pocket RSS feed and stores a PDF version which goes into its full text index so I can find it again later.

I have a lot of papers and manuals and things in there too – anything I think might want to find later.

It's a fascinating idea, but it's reading a lot into a small effect on a very small study group.

The authors also don't seem to dwell much on the effect that novelty itself has on study outcomes. This is a common problem with A/B testing: introducing any divergence from what's familiar can draw participants' attention and affect outcomes. "Like" and "Dislike" buttons are familiar for anyone who's spent time on the internet, but "Trust" and "Distrust" buttons are novel and will be treated more carefully. If they were used widely then we'd eventually develop a kind of banner blindness to the language, and their effect on discernment would be further weakened.

This approach could also overindex comments that express risk and uncertainty. Well-worded concerns and calls for "further study" are a time-honored way of disrupting progress (never forget the Simple Sabotage Field Manual) but often sound trustworthy.

Which makes this comment rather ironic.

It's not listed here but we settled on flax milk as our everyday option in the fridge. It's less energy & water intensive than nut-based milks and has fewer calories than oat milk. It's a slightly thinner, less creamy texture, so I'm not sure it'd work so well for baking, but it's great over cereal.

I also think it tastes better in coffee than oat milk, but few coffee places have it. I'm not sure if it's a reaction with the coffee or the steaming process but I find oat milk tastes sort of papery when added to lattes. Usually the alternatives are almond or soy, which aren't as good environmentally (though much better than dairy options). I'll just have an Americano.

I'm on a Keychron V3 base with Gateron Brown switches and PBTfans Dolch caps. I have some foam fillers in the spacebar, but no hardware mods otherwise.

I went with it for similar reasons: programmable + 3 or 5-pin hotswap + TKL + normal profile gave me a lot of flexibility to try different things.

I'm especially happy with the keycaps I settled on. I realized almost immediately that Keychron's stock "OSA" caps weren't for me. Next I tried an ABS shine-through set, which were too hard to read with the backlight disabled and started to develop shine very quickly. PBTfans seems to hit a sweet spot for me: nice texture, comfortable Cherry profile, PBT material doesn't seem to wear too fast, and doubleshot to prevent the legends wearing down.

I had the same experience bottoming out with linears. Mine were K-Pro reds, which are fine switches otherwise, but I'm more comfortable with browns. On the plus side they let me type quietly when needed so I'm thinking of trying them in a mobile/tablet/travel keyboard – maybe an Ajazz K620T.

I wish it were programmable in VIA instead of NuPhy's software but otherwise their low profile boards look really good to me. I tried a Keychron K3 in the past but strongly dislike their keycaps, and their stabilizers make them incompatible with other brands.

The Odin looks really cool! That little screen should be fun to play with.

I tried posting a new (…ish – I'm not exactly up to date on JRPG news!) link, so we'll see if that helps. 🤞

Would be good to have a clearer idea how to cross-polinate new communities across the fediverse, though. Especially for niche groups it's going to be hard to find each other otherwise.

  • To block users: when you go to someone's profile there's a 🚫 button to block them. It's next to the "Follow" button, below their name.
  • To block magazines/communities: the 🚫 (block) button is next to the Subscribe button in the sidebar. On mobile the sidebar gets moved to the bottom of the page, so you have to scroll down a ways to see it.

I think you're right. There's a "Blocked Domains" section to manage blocked hosts in Settings but I don't see a UI to add domains to it yet. (It's also unclear if it'd be for blocking instances, link posts, or both.)

On Reddit and it’s federated rivals, Lemmy and kbin (www.jayeless.net)

As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …

Absolutely. The details do seem to surprise people, but I think that's because they're often elided in euphemistic summaries and don't stand out in someone's profile history the way that trolling and right-wing invective often do.

It's not like they're all-caps yelling about gas ovens, they're just politely welcoming people into their instance and occasionally upvoting or suggesting that wellactually everything's fine in XinJiang and it's racist to believe Uyghurs who say otherwise, etc.
