In all the #BlueSky versus #Mastodon discussion, i feel there is a mammoth (..) in the room not talked about: Mastodon as a name. I am used to it now and kind of like it, and of course love it here, but as a non-mammoth expert my first associations, if I am honest, were mastitis and, well, another better known mast.. word. I know i am not alone in this so imagine that it’s not uncommon and perhaps a bit unhelpful.. just saying 😏 (will probably delete this soon but wanted to say it just once!)
"But social media also exposes movements to many vulnerabilities. The solidiarities it generates are often superficial: movement use of social media can easily devolve into repetitive messaging in echo chambers without collective gains in narrative power—a change in the stories and values that hold sway in society—or a translation to real-world militancy."
Currently co-founding a co-op, using my freedom to...
> seek employment elsewhere or build a business yourself
> Having to play politics to get my colleagues to agree about my compensation would be a special kind of hell.
I don't understand why negotiating with a superior is better than negotiating with equals. That's not the experience of people I know who work for co-ops. But whatever, different strokes for different folks
@strypey@galdor@mjgardner I guess a business's power is approximately its size, so a co-op would be in some sense a shortcut to creating a large, flat business that is your own and others' employer to reduce personal risk for everyone involved.
In that taxi service platform co-op, people aren't earning the same per se- but there are rules such that which taxi receives a request for pickup is decided in a consistent manner, and fares are set by a global scheme.
Still no answers on the basic question of who, besides Jack Dorsey, are the owners of #Bluesky - either the protocol or the platform
Here is the best coverage I have yet to see on Bluesky, Dorsey, & Musk - from October 2022 by @davetroy. Thanks to @heliomass for remembering it and sharing it with me.
It addressed many issues that I have been talking about with regard to throwing in with Jack Dorsey, as well as outlining many other concerns as well.
I no longer want online social networks that are creating proprietary & locked gardens. Out of the old guard, I only have a #LinkedIn account left.
#BlueSky is supposedly interoperable via its “AT protocol”. Thus far, there's only a single instance of it. If #BlueSky really wants to be a good Internet citizen, it should implement #ActivityPub for integrating in the #Fediverse.
If they do it, I see no reason to move. And if they don't, I see no reason to move either.
Currently, all #BlueSky links are behind a login wall. You can't see what people are posting. I understand this is a beta, but content links should be public. It's the same anti-Internet BS we've come to know from the other social networks.
It's useful to remember that at this point #BlueSky is competing not just with Elon's Twitter, but with Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Substack, others too. Quite the crowded space for yet another Twitter-clone, it can't afford to be anti-Internet too.
@WhyNotZoidberg
I might keep an eye on it because I like AOC. Absolutely fair to say it is not Musk’s dead bird, BUT it is the same people who were doing terrible things to Twitter before it was sold. Jack Dorsey will use an algorithm.
This is why I don't understand why artists post anything to FB or Twitter. If I made money from my creative work, it would all get posted to my site and only LINKED on social media, with perhaps only a teeny preview.
If Really Evil Company, Inc. saw a user's artwork on Facebook that they like, they can start using it in their advertising without permission or notification. Facebook's terms of service say they and their partners can reproduce your work without limitation. They could have limited their distribution rights to only what's needed to provide the service, but why bother protecting user's rights? :(
The “Xfinity 10G Network” is misleading advertising.
BACKGROUND
Here are some of the confusion factors:
The letter G, as in 3G, 4G, and 5G, is used to denote “Generation.” For example, 3G cell phones used “Third Generation” cellular technologies.
Gigahertz, a measurement of frequency, is abbreviated as GHz.
Gigabits per second, a measurement of bandwidth, is abbreviated as Gbps.
Gigabit-speed Ethernet, at ONE gigabit per second, is abbreviated variously as GbE, GigE, or 1 GigE.
Gigabit-speed Ethernet, at TEN gigabits per second, is abbreviated variously as 10GE, 10GbE, or 10 GigE.
Wi-Fi now uses “generational names,” like cellular phone systems do. It didn’t always. For example, the Wi-Fi Alliance now refers to 802.11n as Wi-Fi 4. Then there was 802.11ac, now called Wi-Fi 5. The current standard is 802.11ax, which is called Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 7 is in development. The 4, 5, 6, and 7 have nothing to do with frequency or data rate (bandwidth). People sometimes erroneously refer to 5 GHz Wi-Fi as 5G Wi-Fi, but they’re wrong.
5 GHz Wi-Fi and 5G cellular systems are two entirely different technologies. For example, you can create a 5 GHz Wi-Fi hotspot on a 4G LTE smartphone.
THE CURRENT SITUATION
Today, the average consumer sees the letter “G” everywhere, but really doesn’t know what it means. When they see an ad on television for the “Xfinity 10G Network” they make assumptions based on their incomplete understanding.
Is the “Xfinity 10G Network” the tenth generation of cable Internet service? No. It’s not.
Is the “Xfinity 10G Network” providing Internet bandwidth at 10 gigabits per second? No. It’s not.
The most truthful line in Xfinity’s own explanation of their service is:
"The Xfinity 10G Network is the new brand for our next-generation network."
And that’s all it is. Branding. Be sure you understand this, and explain it to your non-technical friends. It’s Xfinity’s current marketing campaign, and nothing more. No one has been counting cable ISP generations. This is not the successor to their 9th generation network. It’s their “new brand.”
The “G” means nothing. It’s not the generation. It’s not the speed.
Also, the “10” means nothing. It’s not the generation. It’s not the speed.
FULL DISCLOSURE
I’m an Xfinity Internet customer, and have been for years. I’ve heard other people complain about the company, but my experience is that it’s fast and reliable, and their customer service has always been acceptable. My only purpose in writing this post is to clarify misconceptions created by an ad campaign that is almost certainly confusing by design.
Do you need a technology evaluation? I’m here for you.
Oops! Correction for the Alt text on one of the pictures. I wrote, "Screenshot from Xfinity website of their new Xfinity 10G Network logo. The words Xfinity 10G superimposed on the Earth viewed from outer space." But it's the moon, not Earth. <sigh>
The #Bluesky suggested follower experience appears to work. I made one single meaningless post right when I created the account, engaged basically with nobody, and I have 49 followers.
6 months ago I leave #Twitter and join the #fediverse and I don't regret it one bit in fact we have grown over the months despite what pundits said about us and this platform being too hard. Wall gardens such as Spoutible tribel Facebook will begin to lose users soon enough
Deleting our #Twitter Facebook accounts did us a big favor it made it more likely in the future if you ever in a trail the opposition can't use your posts against you if you don't have an account. I believe Carroll will win the case but I wish she deleted her social media because if she did Joe Tacopina wouldn't be able to use it against her unless screenshoted
You wanna know how palpable the tension is here just being #Black vs how you felt on #twitter?
And this is if you are Black and use this word-- how often you say "nigga" on this app?
Did you use it on twitter? Because I know I did with no feelings of weirdness whatsoever. On here I be 👀
And I am someone who generally does not self police my speech, yet I internally feel that "maybe that's too much on this app." Yet it's a regular part of my everyday language.
@Thapsyrensays I see, I understand. Thanks for explaining. And sorry for engaging as a white person from Germany. I never saw the OP. It was just this one post I replied to that someone I follow boosted into my TL. Hope you will find a digital social home that you can feel comfortable and yourself at. @Pocket_cindy
@danyork That makes sense. I am hopeful that with a growing community and active open-source development team, Mastodon/ActivityPub can continue to smooth out the rough edges. Thank you!
