@AbandonedAmerica This is definitely one of those cases where it bothers me to see so much value just left to become junk. I understand how it happened, but feel such waste should be avoided.

@AbandonedAmerica I get how that happens. Heck, I've done it on a much smaller scale - you just don't have time or other resources to get anything out of it and you end up throwing a lot of perfectly good stuff in a dumpster.
Weirdly the anime "Eden of the East" proposed an online solution to that, helping people connect "Here's stuff I don't want" with "hey I want that stuff".

@StillIRise1963 I would argue their overall goal is to establish a nebulous list of crimes which are odious to society, such that ANYONE who opposes them can be accused of sex crimes/communism/treason/perfidy/&c and then not only can that person be imprisoned or killed, but any association with them or attempt to defend them is dangerous as well.

This is not in any way better than simply outlawing being gay.

Ugh, apparently my little tortie foster kitty Madelyne's adoption isn't working out. Looks like I might be spending my Saturday coaxing her out from under a couch.

I'd remind people that most cats take time to acclimate to new homes but I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here. But holy heck people, please be patient with your new adoptions.

@trixter It took Whiskey most of a month to feel comfortable out of hiding. I'd like it if every time I got a cat they Just Knew I'm trustworthy, but it's not like that.

@trixter I generally try to get my handle on every new social media platform. There are two other people who also use this handle, and sometimes their friends message me. At least I don't share a handle with a band.

Paintings on the basement wall of the abandoned Pennhurst State School and Hospital, an residential center for children and adults with physical or developmental disabilities. Pennhurst had a particularly bad reputation due to its overcrowding and reports of abuse and neglect.

The abandoned Seagrams Distillery in Baltimore. Dangerous conditions inside led to at least two deaths after it closed in 1990. It was demolished after a fire in 2017.

@AbandonedAmerica Well, I'd tend to say cities grew around geography - easy access to a resource, or a natural harbor, makes for a settlement. Having access to trade routes (hence resources can be brought in cheaply) makes a city. But resources count when you have the means to USE them, not just pass them to someone else.

@AbandonedAmerica I think, too, it's maybe a symptom of growing up poor that I feel really offended by the waste I see in these abandoned buildings. At the same time my family was struggling to make ends meet, some CEO was deciding to just close a plant and let the entire property rot and rust.

These are my two oldest “permanent residents”, Benjen and Arya. Benjen likes Arya all right but kind of wishes he was still an only cat. Arya loves Benjen so, so much.

@trixter One thing I would caution is, for your first real espresso machine you will probably need AT LEAST as good (and expensive) a grinder as the espresso machine. Which feels wrong - like spending as much or more on the frame as on the painting - but it's a necessity which many people thinking they can make coffee shop coffee at home are not prepared for and find themselves frustrated.

@trixter I don't know that particular grinder, but my immediate impression is it's not able to really do an espresso grind. so you're right to roll with preground for right now.

I’ve updated my foster kitty food donation list for February! I might start posting a Chewy list too, especially since Amazon can be hit or miss with stocking dry food. As of this week we have people interested in adopting Butter Pecan (no thoughts only orange) and Madelyne (tortitude), so hopefully we’ll have more kitties in homes soon. Thank you all so much for helping!

@trixter Alas, we've never had good luck with a third cat. I'm hoping the new one warms up. He's hiding a lot, but it's only been a week and that week included a vet visit.

It would be JimBob taking out that immigrant couple on their street or family with the trans kid, that they've been pissed at for years. All it takes is some sign or assurance that they might get away with it.

@SrRochardBunson ... this was initiated by US forcibly opening Japan to trade (thus demonstrating the Tokugawa Bakufu could not perform it's supposed purpose ("You had ONE job"). However, the Tokugawa Bakufu had effectively prevented the clans from building actual armies, and moreover had a complete monopoly on firearms. As a result, the entire Meiji Restoration had two actual battles....

Retainers of various Daimyo would scuffle, and notably ronin - masterless Samurai, some being just self-proclaimed as being Samurai caste - would kill people whom they perceived as supporting one side, in the hopes of gaining favor from this or that daimyo.
In modern terms, think of militias roaming the streets and killing people for having the wrong bumper sticker on their car.
