Good grief. In the light of 's comments on , decided to do a piece on the . They had a man and woman on to argue about it.

It came out, live on air, that he was being paid and she wasn't. Sky apologised and offered her £75, the standard fee for such an appearance. Then they offered to increase it to £200, the same as they'd paid him.

@RickiTarr I've got a few.

@Homebrewandhacking I barely know them, but they feel like a kindred spirit in the TTRPG space.

@clacksee because I like following authors whose books I enjoy.

@FediTips because I find their advice useful.

Finally, @lizcovart because she founded and owns the instance I'm on. And she seems like a decent individual, which is always a plus.

@user06337 @CindyWeinstein I get that some men might feel uncomfortable seeing a woman breastfeed. But that's for them to deal with.

I used to get really upset when babies cried around me, but I understood that it wasn't reasonable for me, as an adult, to expect a literal baby to compensate for my feelings of discomfort. So I'd cope, or move so I couldn't hear them.

Covering a breastfeeding baby can cause discomfort and/or distress to the baby. If men don't want to see it, they can look away.

It's been around a week since I switched to Linux Mint as my main OS and here are a few thoughts...

If you have a PS5 and like to play remotely from your PC, Chiaki is the app for you. A little wonky to configure, but so far works great.

So far the majority of software that I used with Windows has a Linux equivalent. If it doesn't, I've had to find workarounds.

Haven't had ANY driver problems at all.

So far there haven't been any big issues and it's been pretty painless.

Yay!

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude that's good to hear. Linux has been my primary OS since 2002. I don't have issues, but it's difficult to be sure how much of that is because I've been using it for so long.

I find Windows much more difficult 🙂

It was the first major amphibious operation conducted by the Allies, and they learned some useful lessons from the experience.

We moved to #StokeOnTrent about 17 years ago. Ten years ago my son and I saw a video about #Lidice and its connection to the city at a local museum.

I promised to tell the story to at least two people, in return for a tag on the upcoming Unearthed sculpture. When I told @JetlagJen, she encouraged me to write a book about it.

I've talked about Lidice on #BBC Radio Stoke, #Radio4, podcasts, and YouTube. My book even inspired a song about Lidice.

#OnThisDay in 1942, Vichy French forces on Madagascar requested surrender terms, but prolonged negotiations until after midnight. This meant the campaign officially lasted six months, and their men would receive war pensions and campaign medals.

The whole campaign is fascinating for many reasons. I first became interested in it when I discovered that Tetrarch tanks were used, as standard light tanks, the role that they were designed for.

It's #HolocaustRemembranceDay, a day to remember the victims. As well as millions of #Jews, all sorts of other "undesirables" were murdered. #Trans, gays, romany, disabled people, all murdered.

The village of #Lidice in what is now Czechia, was completely destroyed. The men were shot, the women and kids sent to death camps. They even dug up the graves, landscaped the area, and reissued maps with it removed. The nazis were determined that it should be forgotten.

Remember them all. Never forget.

Today I learned that there was a "wheelbarrow pedestrian" craze in the late 1880s, when lots of people went on very long distance walks, pushing wheelbarrows.

The Victorians were an odd bunch.

Reinhard #Heydrich, one of the architects of the #holocaust, died #OnThisDay in 1942, from wounds inflicted by Czech SOE agents during an ambush some days earlier.

Nazi retailiation was brutal, notably including the complete destruction of #Lidice - Hitler wanted the memory of the village to die. But miners in #StokeOnTrent and #NorthStaffordshire had other ideas.

Now that it's no longer the 6th of June, I feel more comfortable saying that I found the massive outpouring of "lest we forget" messages frustrating.

I wholeheartedly support remembering the sacrifices of those who fought on D-Day. But I get frustrated that everyone else is forgotten. People were fighting and dying elsewhere on 6th June 1944, and they deserve to be remembered too.

The men in Italy referred to themselves as the "D-Day dodgers" because all the attention was on Normandy. The 14th Army in Burma had long since called itself "The forgotten army". SOE had agents in virtually all occupied territories. Sailors of the Royal Navy and merchant navy were risking their lives to ensure convoys carrying food and supplies arrived safely. RAF crews of Bomber Command and Coastal Command were flying regular missions.

In the years before D-Day, many had died in places like Crete, Singapore, North Africa, and Madagascar. Those campaigns, not all of which were successful, made D-Day and the subsequent victory in Europe possible.

When you talk about remembrance, please don't forget those who fought and died in less famous campaigns.

I occasionally see articles and toots about #authors being arseholes and generally behaving badly.

So, as an antidote to that, I'd like to tell you a story about @clacksee being an excellent human being.

A while ago, she sent a message to her mailing list offering a large discount off any of her books when bought direct. I decided to use it to buy a couple of her books to use as prizes at the tombola that #Mermaids will be running at our local #Pride in June.

I emailed her and asked if she could sign them. She replied to say yes, but there was no need to pay - she'd donate them, and she asked which books I wanted. I was grateful that she was going to donate them, so I told her the two books I'd planned to buy.

The package arrived today. It has the two books I asked for, but it also had three other books, and a tote bag. Every book is signed, with a note saying "Protect trans kids".
