Assigned a story with a cool angle to a freelance reporter. It involved attending a certain single-day festival. Two hours after the festival began the stringer texts me: “Hey, I’m sorry but I’m not going to be able to make it” and then came the chaser: She had decided the story I proposed, on an assignment she accepted, wasn’t “impactful” anyway.

I’m flabbergasted.

That ashy smell is of a bridge being burned.

algernon,

@AskPippa Oh no! That’s awful.

Not that I am normally in the habit of moderating my views, but I was completely unable to treat RFK's statement on Jan. 6 as anything other than ridiculous. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/05/rfk-jr-jan6-statement/

algernon,

@pbump This is a good piece. I appreciated it.

Some 44 million Americans are struggling with hunger, including 250,000 in New Mexico, and a nationwide food bank network wants Congress to help.

A bomb went off at the probation office in earlier this week. No suspects have been named or charged in connection with the bombs (one exploded, one didn’t). But I found two people in Deming charged, one in federal court, on charges pointing to what happened.

In August 2022, Ron DeSantis headlined a rally in Carlsbad with Yvette Herrell and Mark Ronchetti. At that time, DeSantis was a hot political prospect, an heir to the Trump movement and likely presidential candidate.

It was one of the weirdest political events I’ve covered… (cont.)

algernon,

Reporters were prevented from talking to people in attendance or even moving around the space freely. A comely young DeSantis operative informed us that the Florida governor would not be talking to reporters at all. (Neither did the candidates for congress or governor!) One local reporter was prevented from even entering the event, the guards having been provided with a photo of him. (Cont.)

algernon,

And the head of Ronchetti’s campaign was observed peering over my shoulder to see what I was typing into my laptop. (I included this in my report but an editor snipped it.)

I came away thinking DeSantis’s obvious presidential aspirations would fizzle. Today, he dropped his bid for the nomination.

Go home, governor, and finish the term granted to you by Florida voters.

The city of Las Cruces is piloting a guaranteed basic income program.

The idea has roots in American philosophy deeper than some might think.

Thomas Paine set out a proposal in the 18th century in a pamphlet that can be found on the Social Security Administration's website.

New Mexico’s slate of “alternate” electors is mentioned, if somewhat on the periphery, in Tuesday’s indictment of former President Donald Trump over his efforts to hold onto power after losing the 2020 election.
If they don’t end up in court themselves, they — and GOP chairman Steve Pearce — should still explain themselves.

    UPDATED WITH A CORRECTION:
The heat index reported from Persian Gulf International Airport today peaked at 152°F, 66.7°C.

That’s not even the record: in 2003, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia reported 178°F, or 81°C.

    But still astounding.

“Drama teachers around the country say they are facing growing scrutiny of their show selections, and that titles that were acceptable just a few years ago can no longer be staged in some districts. The Educational Theater Association released a survey of teachers last month that found that 67 percent say censorship concerns are influencing their selections for the upcoming school year.”

If teachers could actually indoctrinate & brainwash students on any level, there’d never be a missed homework assignment, behavior problem, dropout, or grade lower than an A

History happened & please don’t be awful to other humans isn’t “woke” but also, they barely listen to liberal mind-control like “put your name on your paper” so…

    algernon,

@catvalente Yes! Every time I hear about progressive indoctrination in higher ed, I recall how helpless I felt just getting my students to read the syllabus.
