Assigned a story with a cool angle to a freelance reporter. It involved attending a certain single-day festival. Two hours after the festival began the stringer texts me: “Hey, I’m sorry but I’m not going to be able to make it” and then came the chaser: She had decided the story I proposed, on an assignment she accepted, wasn’t “impactful” anyway.
I have started my IT career with a #commodore#C64, so maybe I have an advantage now? 🤔 Having deep hands-on knowledge of C64, the Basic, it's 6502, it's SID & VIC, having at least killed 2 of them AND having know-how in #quantumcomputing at same time should give a headstart for #headhunter and #freelancing. my career will take off now. 🚀🚀🚀
'As gig work becomes the norm in many fields, freelancing women make significantly less than men — just 79 cents for every dollar a male freelancer makes, new data shows.
Researchers at OnDeck, a personal finance company, in February analyzed the hourly rates of 9,078 freelancers across the U.S. who used the platform Upwork to bill more than 100 hours.'
Hello! 👋🏻 I'm David. Been in tech/web since 80s but last 15+ yrs I primarily identify as #PHP#WordPress dev building plugins that run on a bunch of sites.
I have run out of severance and now I'm running out of savings. It's do or die now, folks. Job offers, job leads, job hunting advice...please send them all my way, and/or boost for reach. Freelancing is on the table, too. Details about me and what I'm looking for, to follow.
If you run a small business without dedicated sales staff, do you put a limit on the free time spent on initial enquiries from prospective clients?
Context: I was turned down for work recently because I only offer 30 minutes, and that wasn't enough. I'm not going to change my policy based on 1 rejection, but I am curious as to how long other businesses allow.
Change your non-payments into intellectual property theft with this one easy trick by adding this clause to your standard contract:
After final payment, the client receives the right to the intellectual property and other products that are created by the contractor under the scope of this contract.
Freelancing/self employment tip (for newbies): W2 wage is not the same as 1099 pay, due to self employment tax/Medicare/SS. $1/hour W2 is not $1 if paid on a 1099 (same rate on a 1099 would be a pay cut). Learned this long ago. #freelancing#contracting#selfemployment
Just finished my business review of the year. It's been a bit tough - 25% drop in income amongst other things - but I think things are looking up for 2024.
A recent paper attributes ChatGPT’s launch with a 2% drop in monthly contracts and 5.2% drop in monthly income for writing-related freelancers on Upwork. There’s certainly been an impact, but I’m not convinced by these numbers.
Now it is the time of the year that you tell potential clients in the retail sector to call you back in January next year as you won't be available until February.
#AI#GenerativeAI#Automation#Freelancing#Copywriting#GraphicDesign#Unemployment: "US researchers showed that within a few months of the launch of ChatGPT, copywriters and graphic designers on major online freelancing platforms saw a significant drop in the number of jobs they got, and even steeper declines in earnings. This suggested not only that generative AI was taking their work, but also that it devalues the work they do still carry out.
Most strikingly, the study found that freelancers who previously had the highest earnings and completed the most jobs were no less likely to see their employment and earnings decline than other workers. If anything, they had worse outcomes. In other words, being more skilled was no shield against loss of work or earnings."
Since shutting down my agency last year, I've noticed a considerable uptick in the quality of work I find. Let's hope this trend is a signal that my pivot was the right choice, and it continues to grow.
It's that time of year where I start getting back into the habit of waking up at 5AM to work on side projects before I start my day in-earnest. It's always been the most-productive time of day for me, and I think I can attribute a lot of my career growth to this time-block. I know it doesn't work for everyone, and I don't do it year 'round these days, but I'm glad to be back.
@liroyleshed My last brick-and-mortar job in corporate was in 2007. Then I went #freelance because infant daycare costs for my late-in-life singleton were beyond ludicrous. Haven’t looked back since: I #AmEditing from the comfort of my home office and still serve as summer mom chauffeur service for my now-16yo (who has a driving permit but not a license cuz #NewJersey).
